I learned a lot about Alaska in the couple of hours I spent here. The exhibits on indigenous cultures and ere excellent (though I would have appreciated individual display items being numbered).

The decimation caused by industrial and colonial practices are addressed squarely, but without (often deserved) blame.

I allotted about 90 minutes to visit but I could easily have stayed much longer. Admittedly I'm a history geek, so a deep dive is possible here, but you can also enjoy a shorter experience. The design and detail are very well done and user friendly. Easy to feel how Alaska has developed to today. Also impressed by the respect for indigenous culture and the inclusive nature of the exhibits. I found it intriguing and enjoyable and wish I'd have given myself more time to better immerse myself.

Thank you for the wonderful review! We welcome history buffs of all varieties. The average visit takes about an hour, however, it is so easy to spend multiple days with our collection! I am glad you were able to allot at least 90 mins. I hope you are able to visit us again in the future so that you can continue to learn from our galleries.

Unfortunately we only had enough time to quickly see the museum. We had planned to go back but ran out of time. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They have done a wonderful job with the displays and educational aspects.

Thank you for your review! I am glad you were able to make the most of your time in our galleries, however brief,--sounds like it was enjoyable. Hopefully you will be able to visit us again in the near future.

What an amazing museum. Well organized, amazing displays and we learned a lot about the history of the people of Alaska. I know there is a lot to tempt you on the outside in Juneau but spend a few hours inside here. We were there about 3 hours. Only regret is no gift shop. Maybe after covid. We were staying at the Baranoff and was an easy walk for us (63+) even in the rain

Thank you for your review! It is always good to hear when visitors are able to spend ample time in our galleries. We, too, encourage people to see our galleries at some point during their travels to get a good overview of Alaska history and an introduction to Alaska's indigenous peoples and cultures. It is unfortunate that the previous store vendor was unable to remain open due the hardships of COVID. We look forward to when times allow for us to bring on a new vendor and to open the store doors, once again! We hope you are able to visit us again in the future, as we do rotate exhibits and add to our permanent galleries.

The exhibit on Native robe weaving, the history and revival of native arts, crafts and culture is excellent and beautifully designed.

Thank you for the lovely review! The idea behind the Spirit Wraps Around You exhibit came about through discussions between weavers and our curator of collections some thirty years ago. We are very excited to have this exhibit in our galleries today and thrilled to hear that you enjoyed it! Hope to see you in our galleries again in the near future.

This is a beautiful, well kept museum. We were able to learn a lot about the history of Alaska, including a lot of information and displays about the indigenous people of the area. There are many items on display that help you learn about indigenous cultures. We especially enjoyed the special exhibit on the robes which were stunning. Before visiting the museum I didn't know that Alaska had been attacked during World War II, and of course the treatment of the indigenous people during that time and throughout Alaska's history has been shameful. It's hard to learn about, but necessary that we do.

Thank you for your review! I'm glad you and your family were able to learn from our exhibits. Between Russian Alaska and American Alaska is a section called "Resilience" which discusses the response from Alaska Native peoples to colonization. This section also highlights the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, an incredible piece of history. I hope you are able to visit us again in the future.

Don’t miss this well-designed museum! Displays on the indigenous culture and the history of Alaska are excellent. It is not that large a museum, and an hour is more than enough. Photos are allowed and there are free lockers available.

Right now (mid-July), guests have to mask up in public buildings, so be prepared.

Thank you for your kind review! We have an extensive Alaska Native cultural collection and are fortunate to have our summer show that dives into the textiles of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. We hope you are able to visit again in the future to see what we have on exhibit next!

Everything about the native peoples seemed hyped. One displayed repeatedly stated their understanding of their history was accurate. That is actually condescending since that effectively states only the museum curators really know and can judge these peoples. And they further state the native peoples had excellent educational and healthcare systems. Like their history, this may well be true yet we are given no reference points because the curators' judgment is paramount. There is no celebration of what of what many of these tribes have become today and that their potential is realized in their present quality of life and successful enterprises. The facility is wonderful and every display attractively presented. Well worth seeing but with active discernment.

Thank you for your review! It sounds like you were able to spend ample time in the museum and read many of the labels, too. We hope you are able to visit again in the near future, as we do rotate some of our exhibits regularly. The labels in our galleries are the product of great statewide efforts. Our curators reached out to experts around Alaska and collaborated on what information to present in our galleries--from maritime history to Gold Rush to Indigenous cultures. For example, most of the label copies you see in the Alaska Native galleries were written by Native curators about their own cultures. In our newer facility (opened in 2016) we are excited to have our exhibits created by Alaskans for Alaskans.

One of the best smaller museums we've been to. Excellent displays with fascinating items. Very good introduction to Native Alaskan groups, as well as history of non-native arrival and influence. Well worth an hour or two, plus the price of admission. Convenient free parking in garage beneath building.

The museum was advertised as being open Tues thru Sat, but we arrived on Tuesday only to find that they changed to Wed thru Saturday. The library was open so their answer was the Tues open meant the library. Disappointing!

Thank you for your review, I am sorry you were unable to visit the Museum. We are located in a facility that houses the Alaska State Library, State Archives, State Museum, and a café. Each entity holds different hours and this can cause confusion. We update our hours on our website and other social platforms regularly. We hope you are able to visit our galleries in the future and that you can spend time with our extensive collection.
