Cool little museum that appears to be family run. Emery for adults in $5 and we’re not charged for an 11 year old. Takes about 15 minutes to get through the museum.

Best part was purchasing a plastic gold pan kit for $8 and then actually panning and finding gold flakes in the river below.

Tip: Take taxi / ride share up to the mine and then walk back to town about 30 minutes, it’s beautiful.

A hidden gem in Juneau. This was a wonderful experience to se and learn about mining in Juneau. The $5 admission fee is beyond reasonable for the return of value. If you are looking for something to do for a family, this is a great option, including the opportunity to pan for gold in the stream on the property.

It was a hike up the hill in the rain but worth it. Loved the history of gold mining in Juneau. Be sure to check the open times due to Covid.

My husband and I walked up to the museum from downtown Juneau. The walk was easy and beautiful! The museum itself is small but has many very interesting items. The owner was working in the yard and opened up for us. Well worth the $5 entry fee. The grounds and setting are nice as well. It gives a good perspective on the gold mining history of the area.

We took a walk in Juneau and in a hillside neighborhood spotted a sign - 1 mile to the museum. So we kept walking. The road loses its pavement as it follows high above the creek. Salmonberries grow along the edge. The museum is across the creek and up the hill at the end of the road. When we arrived, we found the sign: the museum is closed for ?3 hours? midday. But there was a place to sit and rest and have a snack, so we stayed. The docent who arrived at opening time was a mine history enthusiast and meeting him and seeing the museum was well worth the wait.

The Last Chance museum is ins one of the original mine buildings, with much of the equipment used in the early 1900's left in place. We walked from downtown, and I guess it was a little over a mile, but you get to see real neighborhoods, and a couple trail heads as you near the mine. If you enjoy old machinery, or are interested in mining history it is a worthwhile visit. If you take a taxi it is a short gravel path up a gentle incline to reach the museum.

It's about 45 minites of mixing of walk and hike from cruise terminal to the museum with kids. It was cloudy and misty during the walk. It was a quite long uphill to the forest but there were interesting buildings and graffities to check out. The forest walk was nice and relaxing but it was a bit long for kids. We wanted to see the exhabitions but it was closed.
There was a nice swing for kids and some of old machines to see. We found the place for the gold panning so we just had fun looking for gold. When we were there, it was the late August but it wasn't warm with light rain.

Museum near cruise terminal but uphill trek. Rented a car for the day. Drove there. Interesting .25 mile walk from parking lot over bridge over Gold Creek, slight uphill to museum. Fascinating heavy machinery and equipment and tools displayed.

I saw the museum...it was over the bridge. That is not, however, why I went. I went for the gold panning. You should go for the gold panning.

Don't go here to learn about what the gold rushers did back in the 19th century - go to DO what the gold rushers did back in the 19th century - find gold.

I went there with a small selection of gold panning instruments and within minutes of getting my Eddie Bauer boots up to the ankles in frigid water I found gold.

Not a lot of gold, of course...but it is there. When was the last time you had an expedition where you could stick your hands into the water and pull out gold?

I wish I'd known about the gold panning before I'd planned my day. I would have planned instead to spend the entire day panning for gold.

I recommend tall boots, waterproof gloves, a small gold panning kit and a few towels. Maybe hip-high waders if you want to be adventurous.

Fun talking with the nice volunteer at this museum. The setting outside the museum might be the most beautiful setting ever in the mountains with little waterfalls in the background. Take a small walk up a nature path and foot bridge to get to it. $5 for admission (which helps keep this nice historical place with volunteers open-thank you volunteers). The kids were free by the way.

The knowledgeable volunteer (didn’t catch his name but originally from the Midwest) also gave us tips for planning for gold in the public creek just below the museum (you can buy a pan, or in our case we used our own little stainless steel camping pan lids).

We drove as it seemed to far to walk from downtown Juneau (but assume it’s a quick and reasonable cab/Uber).

If your cruise ship tour doesn’t include this museum, you may consider just going to this museum yourself to help support it. We enjoyed being on our own panning for gold in the public creek (you don’t have to pay for being on a tour to pan for gold since it’s a public creek, so unless you want someone like a tour guide by your side to explain what you are looking for which is usually little gold specs then it’s not really needed, since you can get that same information from the museum if you ask for some pointers at the museum); and the museum is self explanatory for a quick walk through. But if you like tours am sure it’s fun too. Have fun and may you strike it rich.
