Took my parents on a ride to provide a taste of the West! Quintessential western ride through Arizona's wine country. Gorgeous views of rock pinnacles, verdent riparian ribbons running through the landscape, and many of the cactus and ocotillo we're in bloom; adding splashes of yellow, red, and orange to the landscape. I'd never rode a horse before but my horse Milkshake was a gentle peach to ride!

This was by far our kids (ages 8 and 9) favorite experience in Sedona. Super close to sedona and nestled in wine country, this 2 hour excusion through the hills was amazing. The horses were beautiful and our guides made sure we all stayed on our horses and on the trail. It is not for the faint of heart in some spots as the horses navigate the desert terrain. We did this on a whim and are so grateful we did. Our kids will remember Woody and Meloncake forever.

Booking: My friend booked this adventure. It was our last stop before going home after a week in AZ for spring break. Price was good and they were very flexible / easy going.

Arrival: we missed the entrance. The signs even say -- your GPS is wrong. Eventually we found it and went up the gravel road to the "stables".

Everyone we encountered was friendly and answered all of our questions. We paid the fees and signed the waivers and we all had to wear helmet / cowboy hat combos.

They do not clean the helmets between rides. A group arrived and put them on the racks when they were done and then we picked them up and put them on. So FYI on that.

When that group returned, it was our turn next. While we waited, I asked a very fit lady who did not look well -- if she was ok. She said yes but looked exasperated. She didn't say much -- I asked her if she had fun and she shook her head like it was something. I didn't know what to make of her response at the time - but she was chugging water and in the shade. That was foreshadowing for me.

It was a very hot day but we were not allowed to carry water with us because the water bottles can spook the horses. Not a good plan.

About us:
I've ridden horses before. I'm out of shape but I do exercise several times a week consistently. We had rider with us that does equestrian riding and her family (who rides occasionally) and my husband and daughter who have never ridden. My husband has a bad back. My daughter is a very active varsity athlete.

We were all fitted with a horse -- and we were on our way. My personal experience was not that great, my saddle was not tight and it kept slipping to the right side. The attendant tightened it twice before we left. More on that later.

The Ride:
The ride is mainly uphill and downhill on a very rocky path. You have to sit really tall in the saddle - especially going downhill and if you're not used to that this is not the ride for you.

My saddle continued to slip and at one point I was barely hanging on. I finally said something and everyone was like OMG! when they saw me. The attendant (we had 2) came and tried to fix it but it wasn't really tightened because I continued to slip. Over correcting the slipping saddle made for a miserable ride for me. I was the only rider with this problem -- apparently my horse liked to distend her belly to avoid saddle tightening.

While we had a nice view at the top -- it's not a Sedona ride with the red rocks...

My daughter got sick while on the trail -- dehydration - started seeing spots etc and they had brought ONE bottle of water. It was 80+ degrees in full sun. We had one bottle of water among 2 attendants and 8 people. I will say they did take care of her and let her feel better before we continued on. But if anyone else needed water we would have not been ok.

So we dismount and there is a platform for you to get on and off. I was dehydrated and felt like crap too. 2 hours out in the heat - you need water.

Yeah, I was glad it was over. I was done about 30 - 45 minutes in. The trail just was not fun and I was tired of slipping sideways and having to overcorrect. The trail is VERY rocky (big rocks) and difficult for the horses to navigate -- it was a constant uphill / downhill. There were no moments of shade. It was very hot - it IS Arizona! I have never been on a touristy trail ride like that.

There was ZERO galloping / trotting -- it would have been scary on that trail anyway.

The kids had fun. My daughter had a good time even though she felt terrible halfway through. Like I said they did take care of her well. My husband was over it 30 minutes in.

Recommendation: Do a more level trail instead of all of those hills especially for a mixed experienced group. Clear out the rocks / make the trails easier for the horses and riders. Allow riders to bring a water bottle (maybe a stainless one that doesn't crinkle).

Horsin' Around Adventures is a well-run horseback riding company in Page Springs about 25 minutes from Sedona Arizona. They offer a variety of riding packages to suit different skill levels and tastes. We (Me, my wife, and two kids, ages 10 & 13) chose the 1.5 hr Cowpoke Ride. The trails wind through the base of House Mountain in the Echo Canyon. The views through the different elevation changes are spectacular!
We had three professional horse wrangles setting up each guest with a suitable mount. Ample instruction is given to the riders so they understand how to control their mount. They have a LOT of beautiful horses available, so the horses are freshly rested, and very well cared for. They don't have to use the same horses for two days in a row. The wranglers were professional, knowledgeable, and friendly.
If you're looking for one of the best trail experiences on horseback, you'll find it at Horsin' Around Adventures.

My three kids (teen/tween-age) and I took a group ride on Dec. 28th. We were the last ones saddled up, and as we were waiting to start the ride, Nick, the guide at the rear got bucked off his horse and landed on his tailbone. His horse came galloping out of the corral and spooked our four horses, all of which started bucking and galloping. Although they calmed down again within a few seconds, it was a terrifying experience as we all thought we were going to fall from our horses, some of us on the side of a steep hill. I was hanging off the side of my horse and only pulled myself back up in the saddle after my horse was calm again.

I was terrified and speechless and figured that was the end of the ride, but neither Nick or the other guide Gina even came around to check on us or ask if we were okay. They just started the group on its way after Nick was settled back on his horse. In Nick's defense, he actually seemed quite injured from the fall so I understand he was distracted. Still, I had zero interest in continuing the ride but was given no option to get out of it, and my kids wanted to continue.

Nick mentioned he was riding his own horse, not one from the Horsin' Around stables. That didn't make me feel any better as clearly his horse led to a safety situation, possibly made worse by the other horses not being used to his.

Suffice it to say, it was an unpleasant two hour ride for me. My kids really enjoyed the rest of it (hence the two-star rating instead of one) but keep talking about how scary it was at the start. As a parent I'm just relieved none of us were hurt, as it could have been a bad situation and not just a scary one.

As for the trail, the majority of it is very steep, narrow and rocky. The horses are rear to nose in a slow line the whole time. The scenery is pretty but not remarkable (no Sedona red rocks here).

Definitely one of the best trail riding experiences ever. Beautiful countryside and very attentive staff. My horse was perfectly matched to me and I felt very comfortable and in control as an inexperienced rider. The staff was friendly and always nearby if help was needed. Loved it! Highly recommend!

My husband and I are not horse people and have had minimal experience with horses, but our visit to Horsin' Around changed all of that. Jeanie was our guide who was friendly, very knowledgeable about the area and horses and gave us lots of information. She knew the terrain, knew the horses and their personalities and overall our private ride was just wonderful. Though most of the ride was walking, we had a few opportunities for trotting which made for even more fun. We would certainly visit Horsin' Around on our next trip to the Sedona area.

Please beware. We had a terrible expercience and my wife was badly injured (thrown from horse and many weeks to months to recover). The trail is dangerous and have not had any response to multiple emails, texts etc from the business. Plus other complaints on BBB and our hotel has them on the do not recommend list. If this isn't enough there are zero views of the red rocks and its is far out of town.

The rare experience that combines value with quality. It was an awesome 2 hours of riding. The ranch hands specifically choose each horse to match the temperament of the rider. Then once you’re on the trail they make sure to stop at the most scenic spot for pictures. I loved the stories they told about the area and how it has changed through the years. I’d definitely go back to them.
