Went there at night and it was a beautiful view of Grahamstown. I would suggest to go a bit earlier. This is located at the top of the hill with old cannons and can get windy. I hope the sunrise or sunset view will be amazing. One could do with a better camera for the photos.

Take a picnic basket and enjoy the sunset over Grahamstown. From here you can see the whole of Grahamstown

Doch vergebens. Es wurde nicht geöffnet!!!

Fort Selwyn, strategically sited on Gunfire Hill, is worth a visit, esp if you are at the Settlers Monument. The walls of the fort are surprisingly low, but great all -round visibility means that the fort would be easy to defend. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, the gate had been chained and padlocked but from my vantage point, I could see a couple of the large cannon. The site could benefit from some information boards so that visitors could fully appreciate the significance of this fort's history.

This Fort is situated on the grounds of the 1820 Settler's monument. The Fort is named after the person who was responsible for the design and construction of the fort, namely the late Major Charles Jasper Selwyn. he fort was occupied by the Royal Artillery from 1836 until 1862, when most of the garrison was withdrawn from Grahamstown. It was later then used during the Anglo-Boer War from 1899-1902. The fort was then used as a tea garden in 1925 and declared a national monument in 1936. The view from this historic structure is quite spectacular. It was however very sad to see the graffiti and the amount of rubbish strewn around on the grounds.

After an interesting visit to the Observatory Museum we drove to Gunfire Hill to see Fort Selwyn. The hill got its name because the Royal Artillery used to fire a gun each morning at 9 o’ clock until 1870.

Fort Selwyn was built in 1836 to protect the town and its water supply. It was declared a National Monument in 1936. The fort is quite small but the view of the town is great. We could see the whole town and even identify some buildings like the cathedral. I was very impressed about how clean the fort was. (Compared to the dirty Fort Frederick in Port Elizabeth)
