Nature did not disappoint. We had some lovely sightings.
However, the trip was marred by the HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE comments of the ranger in response to a question about homosexuality
among giraffe. His answer revealed his ignorance and was also offensive. He let himself down by trying to be clever with his "social" commentary rather than impressing us with a knowledgeable and informed response about wildlife.
As a former tourist guide, I was also disappointed at his lack of effort and enthusiasm to fully engage with us and share his knowledge of the bush. This reserve will never have the allure and magic of Kruger or Addo or Pilanesberg et al. However, an enthusiastic , knowledgeable guide would have added great value to the experience and made up for what the reserve lacks in the way of wildlife and energy.
Unfortunately for us, the ranger let himself down in this department too. The outing would have been richer for him as well had he made more effort to interact with us. HIS BAD.

It was a disappointing experience. Had to travel a fairly long distance from Knysna to the Park and then find out it didn't have any big cats. Didn't even see any elephants though the guide insisted there were some in the Reserve. On top of it the tour truck got stuck in the soft ground during the tour and had to be rescued.

A great two hour drive on the reserve with Tertius. He is a resourceful game ranger that gave a lot of information about the animals’ behavior and how they react in the wild. We saw a myriad of antelope, buffalo, hippo, rhino, elephants, crocodile, zebras, wildebeest and resident cows. The drive on the reserve was an excellent destress from city life. As mentioned, if not for Tertius’ wealth of information, the drive would have been less exciting. We saw so many animals that the cost was not even a factor. I recommend the drive at the reserve to everyone who wants to see animals up close and without the fanfare of ‘where is the big five!’

Several changes since our last visit but still an enjoyable two hour trip around the park. No longer offering horse riding which was enjoyable and all the big cats have gone. Just four of us on the safari which was a perfect number and the guide was knowledgeable and found most of the animals- hippo, elephants, giraffe ,wildebeest and numerous antelope species. We actually spotted the rhino on the way out.
If you accept the reserve for what it is, then should be enjoyable for most people but if you want to see the Big 5 then you will need to travel to one of the big safari reserves.

It needs to be remembered this is a reserve, it's not wild country
We came in via the main gate to quickly see giraffes and elephants, which was a bit of a surprise. It was then a bit of a drive, in an at times poor track, to the main building. It was also unsigned at a couple of key points, not helped by us being the only two people there.
The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, explaining how they use cattle that they can vaccinate to help with tick control. I also guess it's a revenue stream.
There's the usual mix of antelope, zebra etc. They've also got some elusive giraffes, nine elephants, a rhino, a couple of hippos, and it's a nice site. It would probably not have been as good if it hadn't just been the two of us.
They apparently used to have lions but no longer. I'm not convinced it's got the scope for that.
And they also have a slightly odd crocodile area, a pond within a rampart. I get that they can't put them near the nearby river but I don't really get why they are there at all.

Unfortunately, a big disappointment. We have visited game drives before; however, this was not a highlight. The resort itself is very outdated and without guests. Upon arrival, I had already wondered why the resort itself is not really fenced. After the tour it was clear to me: there are not enough wild animals ;-) We only saw Zebras, Ostrich, Blue Wildebeest, 5 Giraffes and 5 Elephants. Two hippos were in the river. Afterwards an endless drive over jogging track to caged crocodiles.
Unfortunately no experience for us. Not recommended at all with children, as the tour was not designed interesting and dragged out by the crocodile visit. The guide gives the impression that this is his 1,000 tour and he just presses play.

Firstly, I’d booked my slot, saw the forecast looked wet so emailed asking for the earlier slot. As the ride is non refundable even if they cancel on you!
I had confirmation of the 10am ride time and got there at 9:30 as it said. When I arrived at reception the lady, who wasn’t the most pleasant to communicate with, said she’d emailed me to say a horse was injured so they don’t have space for me anymore. I checked my emails before leaving as only get wifi at our accommodation.
Came back for the afternoon ride with my partner who was joining me, explained I still hadn’t got the email and she said they sometimes get lost as it’s a bad connection. She wasn’t particularly apologetic for wasting an hour of our time in travelling that morning!
The ride itself was ok, if my partner was heavier there’s no way we’d of ridden the little horses. I can’t believe they don’t advertise a weight restriction as they are only small. We saw most of the animals you’d expect to see and it was extra special being on a horse up close. BUT I wish I’d looked at other reserves as this one just seems like they’ve popped a load of animals in a big field. We’d done 5 safaris at different locations by this point and I’d be extremely disappointed if I’d done it as a driven safari.

This is more like a zoo but on a much larger footprint.
One lonesome male lion in an enclosure - “waiting for two lionesses to join him” they better hurry up or this guy will die of boredom. One lonely hippo in a pond - “the other one was in a different pond today” our driver informed us.
A few elephants wandering around - where do they come from we asked? Expecting our driver to say the Kruger or some such place. Knysna Elephant park he says. Well, at least they’re no longer performing for tourists.
The highlight was probably the two rhino.
Some blue wildebeest, a few Cape Buffalo, the usual impala.
The cost for exactly two hours - trust me could not have been more accurate on his return time of 17:00 - was about £44 per person. Terrible value for money.

We enjoyed a pleasant couple of hours strolling around the reserve on horseback. The guide led us to various areas where different animals could be seen and gave some info about each type of animal. Guide was knowledgeable, horses were placid, animals were relaxed and easy to view what could be better?
Being on horseback had the advantage of no motor noise and an excellent all-round view compared to a truck.

We were there for three days and had two drives per day. Don’t worry you will see the big five on most of the drives. The rangers are superb and know exactly what they are doing. The drives are at a fairly fixed time when they know most of the animals are out and about. Enjoy 😊
The owner mentioned after critical comments on the zoo-like fencing of the lion-pair that their roaming freely will be arranged in the "near future"... When will the future be near?

Good day. The legislative jurisdiction regarding the conservation and management of wildlife is shared between the national and provincial governments of South Africa. The Constitution mandates that “[n]ature conservation, excluding national parks, national botanical gardens and marine resources,” is one of the functional areas in which there is concurrent national and provincial legislative jurisdiction. Our permits to allow free-roaming lions are dependant upon permissions granted by both our national and provincial governments. We have not been granted these permissions as of yet and will advise once they are in place. Please refer to our website or our FB page for that announcement once those permissons have been granted.

hello! im planning to spend 2 days at addo national park. any thoughts on whether i should also try and do a game safari at plett game reserve? also, does anyone have details around the conservation efforts here at plett game reserve? presume they do not allow hunting of any sort ("excess" animals)? thanks

You can just do the horse ride , the cost is R490 pp and is very good but you must have horse riding experience
