Undiscovered Jewel
feb. 2019 • Venner
This route west of Port Elizabeth is indeed an undiscovered jewel. While some of the route consist of low growing windswept coastal vegetation, the winding roads constantly surprize with interesting corners and beautiful views. One of the highlights has to be the unexpected 'desert dunes' west of Maitland Beach that has the look of the Namib desert. The coast is rocky, the beaches more pebbles than sand but there are photo oppertunities aplenty.

Great way to discover Port Elizabeth and its attractions
jan. 2016 • Familie
Whether you are a local or visiting Port Elizabeth for the first time, it is a great idea to get your hands on the Ibhayi Sunshine Saunter route map, which is obtainable by either downloading it online via the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism website or by visiting their offices which are situated in the Boardwalk complex in PE. This map has the routes to numerous attractions and beaches in PE. From the tourism offices, you can continue on Marine Drive, towards Pine Lodge. Ziggy's is a nice pub with a view of the ocean or you could proceed further down the road to Cape Recife and SAMREC. Further along Marine drive, you will pass the various resorts such as Willows. You can visit Schoenmakerskop, where there is a lovely restaurant, Sacramento. Further along at Seaview, there are two really great eating places with a view of the ocean, namely Dizzy Dolphins and Barnacles. Further inland, there is a great private nature reserve, Kragga Kamma where you can see giraffe aplenty, rhino, buffalo and a wide variety of buck. They also have a cheetah enclosure and at an extra charge, they allow visitors to have a close encounter with the cheetah. They have A-frame log cabins if you wish to stay a couple of nights. There is also Homeliegh Farm petting zoo in close proximity which does charge a nominal entry fee.

A faire...car peu fréquentée !
mar. 2014 • Familie

Well worth it!

If the wind is pumping, or you want to eascpe the overcrowded beachfront, then get an Ibhayi Saunter map - either from the tourist bureaux or download it - and discover the various attractions that we have on our doorstep!
If you are based down at the beachfront, then go along Marine Drive ( Retief Monument on your right," Something Good "on your left). Once you move out of the built-up areas, there are a variety of interesting places on the seaward side of the road; SAMREC, Cape Recife Nature Reserve, Willows resort. All along the coastline, which is very rocky, there are small inlets which are ideal for exploring or paddling, but swimming in the sea should only be done at spots where there are lifeguards on duty.
There are some super restaurants on the Saunter route - try "Grass Roof" for meals with a lovely sea view; "Sacramento" is popular too, while "Elephant Walk" at the western most end of the Kragga Kamma Rd, is a complex with a lot of interesting little shops and of course, a lovely restaurant!
Also recommended, is a very popular and inexpensive "touch farm" with kiddies play centre at "African Sky's", where refreshments are available too. Kragga Kamma Game Park is well worth a visit- a half day at least! Not far of the Kragga Kamma Rd, is "Lake Farm", open to the public on Sat and Sunday mornings - a super place to have tea!
Be aware that the Kragga Kamma Road is very narrow and the shoulders of the road are in poor condition; also avoid if you can, the intersection of Victoria Drive and Buffelsfontin Road, as motorists have had their windscreens smashed in this area.

Not well known, but has spectacular views of the ocean. Saw some whales out at sea and dolphins close by while enjoying a lunch at Barnacles Restaurant

A beautiful and enjoyable drive
jul. 2012 • Familie
The Sunshine Saunter route starts on the PE beachfront and follows Marine Drive past Cape Recife and the Willows to Schoenmakerskop. From here you travel up Victoria Drive, turn left on Sardinia Bay road and then up to Seaview / Old Seaview Road for the trip down to Seaview and Maitlands and back via Colleen Glen and Kragga Kamma Road. Attractions along the way include SAMREC, Sacramento Trail, Boma Reptile Park, Maitland Dune, Seaview Preditor Park, Kragga Kamma Game Park and Elephant Walk to name only a few. The coastal drive is beautiful along the Wildside and past Seaview with magnificent views towards Maitland. Except for the main attractions mentioned visitors will discover lots of other smaller ones. Well worth exploring over a weekend.
