Thanks to the friends of the Koppies, this nature reserve is well conserved and a wonderful place to stroll around. The Koppies is divided in three sections (west, central and east). The east section is the easiest to access. It is also relatively safe there, as the area is fenced between Melville and Emmarentia neighborhoods with many private security guards and companies. However, even here the advice is not to walk around with anything of value.
In the Koppies you can an idea of how the original Joburg landscape once looked like. The high ridges are also good to get a view on the city towards the east.
Gates close at sunset.
If for some reason you did not manage to get out in time, go to the southern gate at Kloof road. The security guard outside has keys and will let you out.

I walk at the East Koppies almost every day. Wonderful place. Thanks to the Friends of Melville Koppies for the tireless and thankless work they do.

The morning hike in the heritage central section is wonderful - exquisite views of Joburg, excellently and lovingly maintained, and good exercise! A wonderful outdoor activity to do with friends.

Awesome morning spent at Melville Koppies through the hiking trail. Good to breakaway to an unspoilt environment and plenty points of interest to see along the walk. Definitely recommend 👍

An early Sunday walk, leaving from Marks Park takes one through the lovely nature reserve and to the site of an Iron Age furnace. An interesting insight into the origin of our city, courtesy of our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, David.
It is an easy walk, about 4km spread over 3 hours, with frequent stops to hear about the history, or snippets about the trees and flowers.
The reserve is managed by a team of volunteers who do a sterling job to maintain the paths and keep the area secure.
This is a must for all Johannesburg residents and any visitor with an interest into the archaeology of our city.

We had a wonderful guided walk at Melville Koppies and were very pleased with the overall upkeep of this beautiful park, as well as the informative guides who took us on our walk. Our children loved learning about the various plants and their uses.

I did the 9km (about 3 hours) hike with the Mellville Koppies volunteers today. It costs R60 but the money goes towards the upkeep of the park and salaries for the security officers. It's basically a hike winding around the Mellville Koppies until you get to the top and then a leisurely walk back to your car. It was not difficult at all, but too far to take small children along.

We have been wanting to visit Melville Koppies for years and join in one of the guided walks. It was an absolutely amazing walk. Everything was so well organized. A huge crowd joined for the walk but all went smoothly. It was beautiful walking through the 'forests' and seeing the amazing rock formations. A few tough climbs but on the whole a moderate walk. The paths are all very well maintained. We will definitely be joining a walk again.🌻 we definitely recommend this outing.

I really liked coming out here and walking around and exploring the trails.
There are some really great views of the city from the high points of the East Koppies.The views of the city were great as a storm rolled in right in front of me and the elevation made for a great memory.
It was an easy place to get to and it isn't a strenuous walk.You will see ibis and birds of prey and corvidae and commercial jets off in the distance.
It was peaceful and there are some good picnic spots on the rocks out here too.
It is a good place also to walk your dog.

Hi, so I'll be coming with my family and we want the kids to come along. Ages 8 months and 3 years. Is it safe? We'd also like to have a picnic, is there an area for picnics? And I heard it's R60 to enter, do kids pay?

Hi there, yes it is open everyday all day, although can get confusing because it has so many gates! We reached several that were locked, but if you head past the "main" gate straight down the road, to the traffic lights / robots, turn left then keep walking / driving, there is the "always open" gate on the left after a short distance. If you need more specific roads names for example let me know as dont have them to hand immediately but I can find them. It is lovely for hiking, I and a friend hiked there alone, and I believe this is common. However the reason we were told the other gates (including main one) were locked was because of criminals using that side of the park (the East side seem to have a problem unlike the West, if that makes sense). There are fascinating rock features to see as well as fantastic views over the city :)
