The best guide EVER.
okt. 2017 • Par
My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending the day with Howard, who is by far the best and most knowledgeable guide we have ever had on any trip, anywhere in the world (and there have been some great ones). Polymathic, passionate, facts-based and a lot of fun, Howard fielded my scattershot questions on topics like the modern social, economic and political context underpinning what we were seeing, while also managing to open our eyes to the incredible paleoarchaeology and geology of the region. Every piece of information Howard shared opened a new door to so many questions, which he fielded with patience and detail. We need a year more with Howard.

Outing to Rhino and Lion Park
apr. 2017 • Familie
I booked an outing to the Rhino and Lion park for our staff and their children. It was a great experience for all. Kelvin, their driver and guide, was informative, patient and engaging. Arrangements with the office was efficient and friendly.
The pick up was prompt and the outing cost effective as it included all entrance fees and lunch.
Well done to all at Aah-Africa! Our sincere thanks for a superb day.

Guiding around Johannesburg
mai 2017 • Par
Howard, the guide has a wealth of knowledge on Johannesburg and of the social and political history of South Africa. His knowledge of the settlement of SA was extensive.

He was marvelous. With his background as a mining engineer he knows intimately geology and mining. His interests are also archaeology. He took us around the Centre of Human Kind. With his knowledge and interest in science he was very informative. He was exciting and a great teacher. His ability to tell stories was amazing. He was entertaining and brought the history of SA to life with the tours he took us on. He is a real treasure and a gift. His love of SA and his belief in democracy was refreshing.

A marvelous person who was sensitive to our requirements and professional in his manner. He was gracious and respectful.

Dave and I really enjoyed his company. Because of his approach we loved our time in Johannesburg. He brought the city to life for us. What a melting pot of civilization.
It was a privilege to have Howard as our guide.

Regards

Robin

Hello robinT578EZ, it's Howard here. Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been back-to back for a while. Thank you for your kind review. You are amongst the the few (relatively speaking) who have spent enough time in Jozi, Pretoria and the Cradle of Humankind to get under the skin of the place and to experience the contradictions and contrasts that make it such a compelling place to get to know. A recent post by @MrHudson #MrHudson underlines this. This 'gritty city' as I call it lies at the centre of the social, political and economic landscape of all of southern Africa. What happened in Jozi didn't stay in Jozi! - it's just so textured and layered. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you and Dave and would gladly host all All Blacks in Jozi. :)

Malapa Tour
mar. 2017 • Forretning
As a massive Egyptology fan and a bit of a history buff, I was curious, excited and a little unsure about going on a tour to look at human fossils!!

When we arrived at the Cradle Restaurant in the Cradle of Humankind, we were met with a stunning vista of typical South African bush, and I couldn’t believe that we were only 40 minutes outside of the bustling city of Johannesburg.

After climbing onto the landrover, we set off with our charming guide, Howard. Driving us through beautiful scenery, he regaled us with lots of interesting facts about geology, history, plants, animals and human nature. We saw plenty of wildlife – buck, zebra, warthog, giraffe, wildebeest – it was like being on the set of Out of Africa!!

We went into the cave where Lee Burger had found fossilized remains of humans, millions of years old, and then went to the viewing site, where one of the recent finds was made. From a beautiful structure made out of steel , which blends totally into surrounding nature, we were able to see how and where these fossils were found.

After being a little sceptical (I do love the pyramids and Egyptian artifacts and stories), I was surprised to find that the stories that Howard had told us, were just as fascinating, and far more important, as these finds have given us insight into where we all come from as human beings.

With my mind reeling from the enormity of what we had just seen, we drove back to the restaurant, through the beautiful bush – a little tired, but more excited at what we had learned and had the privilege of seeing – something unique and special!

I would recommend this tour to everyone!!

Hello Jennifer G, thank you for your kind review. The Malapa Tour does challenge one's concept of time. Egyptology offers names and personalities around which one can imagine the life and times of people that lived thousands of years ago. When we look at fossils of of our truly ancient ancestry, it asks of us to cast our minds back to a time a thousand times older than than the pyramids. Karabo is the name of the young male Australopith unearthed at Malapa and while his story remains unrecorded in the conventional sense, palaeo-anthropologists like Prof. Lee Berger seek out every possible clue from the fossilised bones and the encasing geological strata to tell Karabo's story. Karabo's story is ultimately our human story - and all of this is revealed in the truly wild and beautiful landscapes that comprise the very heart of the Cradle of Humankind just outside Johannesburg.

Malapa Tour

The Malapa tour with Howard was a life changing experience. Howard has an excellent knowledge of the area as well as the plants, animals, birds, trees, flowers, grasslands and the geological formation of the Highveld. It is an unbelievably beautiful area and everyone should experience this tour at least once. It has made my husband and I debate the relevance of time and how old the earth is. Thank you Howard for a very entertaining day.

Hello Tania C thank you for your kind review. The Monday Malapa tour was a pleasure to host because you were all so engaged in the story of our planet and the long path of our common human evolution. I know that billions (geologically speaking) is a bit mind-blowing. But it puts the millions (of human evolution) into some perspective. Nonetheless, the Malapa tour is blessed not only with stunning scenery, but also with some unexpected game viewing as well .... I mean who expects to see a herd of 150 eland barely 30km from Sandton City? It also asks some some pretty deep questions of each of us. Once again thank you for taking the time to review your Malapa Tour experience.

Best. Tour. Guide. Ever.

I booked a Soweto/Johannesburg tour with Howard Geach. Howard's understanding of history, geology, geography, etc. provided an insightful backdrop to Soweto and Jburg. I had some incorrect preconceived ideas about this area--especially Soweto. Howard's tour showed me some amazingly vibrant and upbeat sites as well as some areas that are still struggling. The balance of the two was impactful.
We ate lunch at a great spot in downtown Jburg that felt safe and "hip". Howard's love of his country and this city is evident. I can't recommend him enough!
I plan on booking him for a tour of the Cradle of Humankind area on my next trip to Africa.

Hello pearlfrancis thank you so much for your kind words. Jozi (local jargon for Johannesburg and Soweto) is a most intriguing place, even for me as a lifelong resident. It is filled with contrasts and contradictions, uplifting and inspirational places and people living almost cheek by jowl with people struggling to live in some pretty gritty places. Nonetheless, Jozi citizens continue to create a city with a new mojo - one that is keenly aware of its' past but which looks to create a hip new multi-cultural future. When next you're here I would be delighted to show you another amazing side of Jozi - our own species' journey to humanity. We'll go see 'dem bones in The Cradle of Humankind!

Joburg & Soweto - A Tour Like no Other
apr. 2016 • Venner
This tour was probably the most interesting 8 hours I've spent in the past 10 years.

Billed as a Joburg and Soweto tour, this was so much more. Howard, our guide, delved into the cultures, the economics, the politics, the geology, and of course the very real people that formed and defined not only the greater Joburg, but also South Africa. We went on an incredible journey - both physical and historical - through "brother and sister" of Soweto and Joburg. The journey was one of contrasts: the matchbox houses of Soweto vs the mansions of leafy Joburg; downtown decay vs urban renewal and hip living; history vs the modern; divisions vs reconciliation.

The breadth and depth of the knowledge of our guide, Howard, was jaw-dropping; but the thing that really captured us was his ability to weave this knowledge into an incredible captivating story.

If you're planning to pass through Joburg, DON'T just pass through - stay a night and ask Aah-Afrika to give you an insight into what makes this country so unique.

Hello UkSafari_Addict, thank you for your kind review. The story of Jozi is filled with fascinating and often unknown details of human endeavour. It's modern history is rooted in the largest deposit of gold on the planet - all of this next door the greatest repository of the fossilised remains of our ancestors in the Cradle of Humankind. It is indeed a place to spend time getting to know

Tour to Parys
des. 2015 • Venner
Aah-Afrika collected us promptly in a luxury vehicle for the 1hour 15min road trip to Parys that is situated on the banks of the Vaal river in the Freestate. Our attraction was the antique shops on the main street and local food at various restaurants.
Our first stop was Op die Plaas for a truly farm experience breakfast. We spend the rest of the day visiting all the local antique and quaint shops. Our afternoon ended with an ice cold beer at the Jimmy Jagger that serves the best burgers!

On our way back to Johannesburg we stopped at the Newtown Junction for some shopping.

Lovely day out!

Hello Carolinehf59 and thank you for your kind review of your Parys day trip. Parys is indeed a favoured weekend destination for Jo'burgers wishing to enjoy timeout from city life. It is close enough for a day trip, but far enough to feel you're really in the countryside. As we say here in South Africa 'If the locals like it ... it must be lekker!'
