Friendly staff every time, been though many times, staying in nelspruit. Think it can be upgraded like Crocodile Bridge, where you can stay in car and book in at entry gate boom, no walking to offices or need to exit car

I am sorry to say that my experience on the sundowner drive at Kruger National Park's Phabeni Gate on May 3rd, 2023 (the Park's Drive itself and not a Private Drive) was extremely disappointing. I had booked and paid for the drive in advance, looking forward to a memorable experience exploring the park's natural wonders.
However, my hopes were quickly dashed when I met the driver assigned to our tour. He was rude and uninterested, providing no information or insights on the game, environment or the park's history. He did not even identify the animals for the international tourists. His lack of enthusiasm and disinterest in his job was apparent, and it made the experience feel like a waste of time and money.
It is unacceptable for a driver to behave in such a manner, especially when representing a world-renowned destination such as Kruger National Park.
I strongly advise others not to use the park's game drive and instead book a private tour with a reputable company. While the park's wildlife is undoubtedly magnificent (we saw magnificent game), it is clear that the drivers employed by the park are not always up to standard, and the experience can be a letdown.
In conclusion, my experience on the sundowner drive at Kruger National Park's Phabeni Gate was deeply unsatisfactory. I hope that the park takes note of these concerns and takes steps to ensure that their drivers are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging. As for me, I regret that I wasted my time and money on this experience and would not recommend it to others.

I am appalled by the service received from SANPARKS and Phabeni gate in particular.
I’ve been trying for two weeks to book a night drive at Phabeni gate.
I was told that they need at least four people to book before the drive will take place.
I informed the gate that we will book for four guests. I was even prepared to pay for all the seats on the vehicle and told them that!
After numerous phone calls I was told on the day that they had no bookings!
When I said that they did have a booking for four guests, I was told that they had no guide available!! It was almost as if they changed the reason not to do the drive.
The gate staff's attitude is that they do customers a favour every time they answer the phone or respond to a query.
They keep telling you that they will call back, never to do so. When one calls them again the last person you spoke to has gone for the day!
I am not surprised that the park is in the sorry state it is in. We constantly have to hear that there is no funding, but when people try to book and pay for activities it is made impossible by their staff.

Without any signage saying what is expected from us, the staff were extremely rude, not only to us but to the people before us too.

Entered Kruger here in the mid morning to do a self-drive for a few hours before returning to Johannesburg. We were in Sabie so drove here (~1 hour) and are glad we did it. We hadn’t see Cape buffalo prior to this so were able to knock out another one of the big five AND we saw two species of vultures (both HIGHLY endangered). The latter was just breathtaking!
There is a rest area about an hour in so you can stop for toilets. Ensure you go slow as you never know when animals will jump out onto the roadway or decide to suddenly cross.

Like all Kruger Park gates Phabeni Gate can be very busy early in the mornings of peak dates (weekends and public/school holidays. Our experience is that the staff are always cheerful and helpful--we carry Wild Cards which simplify the entry processes by not involving cash transactions. On many occasions we have encountered our first animals within a few kilometres of the gate but do remember that you are visiting their home so the animals be visible when they, and you, are in the same place--they are not there at your commend.

Phabani gate was safe and efficient, I heard it does get very busy at times. Follow the rules of the park, be alert and stop where other vehicles stopped as they most probably made a sighting. Early mornings and late afternoons are usually the best time. Be sure to visit Skukuza and the train restaurant if you have time.

We are regular visitors to the knp and often enter through open gate which is an absolute pleasure.
However on the 28th august we entered through Phabeni gate and we were completely disappointed with the lack of organization at this beautiful entry gate. Staff are completely incompetent. The gate was extremely busy..However there was no staff directing visitors or explaining the check in procedures.. which left guests confused and irritated. To further add to this..there was only one cashier.
2hours later we eventually entered the park after a very frustrating wait. Will definitely avoid this gate in future and will stick to orpen!!!!

Entering after 9am is quick, no queues, and most of the animals are still there! Good access to a couple of well maintained dirt roads, the river one is nicer.

We were greeted with friendly smiles and an efficient entry process into the park. The lady that assisted even managed to find the correct reservation number after I got one digit incorrect
Be ready to fill in an additional COVID-related form and have all the documents you may need ready when you enter. Only one person per family is currently allowed in the reception area.
The road from here to Skukuza is always productive and we saw buffalo, sable and a hyena den within 10km from the gate

We will be staying in Hazyview and self driving for several days. Can you suggest routes to follow inside the park for seeing wildlife and for seeing interesting parts of the park?

A couple of tips:
* go early (from memory the park opens at 6:30am or 7am) as the animals are up and about early;
* check the animal boards (as per previous answers);
* there are safari tour vehicles, the drivers of which tend to know/hear where the big five are, if you follow along;
* the watering holes are where we saw the most;
* signing in at the gate could mean a queue (take your passports and a pen with you to the registration office);
* a park map is handy;
* when you pull over to view elephants, turn your engine off - the rumbling of the engine can get them agitated as it interferes with their comms.

I am not sure what the daily charge is as we have a wild card. If you are staying outside the park and entering multiple times this is the way to go and it is also valid for many other Sanparks reserves. The wild card is quite expensive if only using as a once off but totally worth it for multiple entries and is valid for a year. With the card you don't pay any more entry fees for that year.
