And four years (since my last review) later the museum has still not reopened! Some maintenance was apparently done to the building last year, but there is still no sight of an open gallery.

ferme depuis plusieurs années, ne perdez pas votre temps. L'accès au bâtiment est occupé par un campement de réfugiés, le musée en lui meme est fermé (apparemment depuis plusieurs années selon mes renseignements)

I have repeatedly requested Tripadvisor to mark this museum as closed, but to date no response!

The listing still shows long-since not operating hours.

One regularly sees tourists standing in front of the grimy/unkempt building, looking at their phones/guidebooks! At least Tripadvisor should make known the fact that the museum is closed!

Lost next to the bustle of Greenmarket square is a quiet cool haven in a restored Old Cape Dutch "Town House".

Here is the Michaelis Collection, and eclectic and unique snapshot of visions past and present. Old Dutch masters (not you typical Rembrandts or Vermeers) jostle alongside hangings from the walls of the gentry of the Old Cape Colony. Sometimes one is startled to find a vibrant, multi-coloured modern piece next to reminiscences of to time gone by.

Quite a surprise (and the Michaelis is very good at that) was a series of Van Dijck scetches, very precise, very neat and often very evocative. The bit of the collection that os on view at any one time is small (only two floors of the building) but they rotate them with good effect. Very nice.

Like so many of these hidden gems, the Michaelis is struggling to survive and the small entrance fee is almost an insult to the efforts of the Friends. More should be done to preserve and enlarge heritage sites like that.

For the art aficionados or those obsessed with Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and the Da Vinci Code, there is so much art in this ancient house for you to appreciate. The house itself has been well maintained by the museum administration that you feel transported through time. This is even intensified by the antique furniture and of course the paintings that depict life back in the 1700-1800s up until the first world war.

Although there are days the museum is closed for renovations and maintenance, it is worth the wait.

Well worth a visit. It was a real thrill to see these masterpieces so close up, and at a R20 entrance fee there couldn't be any better value for money anywhere. The information cards next to the etches could do with a bit of a proofread, but overall this is a really nice exhibition. The only negative is the huge sign that says "No public toilets". What's up with that? Surely that's a very basic requirement for a public facility such as this?

An 18C Cape town house of lovely proportions, housing a collection of mostly 17C Dutch and Flemish paintings. Most of the paintings are pleasant without being outstanding, but there are a few gems and the museum is definitely worth the modest entry fee.

The Old Town House was built in the late 1750s - and claims to be the oldest two-storey building in South Africa. It is a wonderful example of how colonial cultures brought their pasts with them to new settings: the house itself could be in Leiden or the Hague or Amsterdam. It's a beautifully proportioned domestic-size public building, and the use of white and blue tiles and brick are very Dutch. There are some fine fireplaces, and the building exudes moneyed confidence - A town hall for a town that was on its way!
The art collection is fascinating - described as Seventeenth Century Netherlanish it starts with late sixteenth century, but concentrates on portraits, landscapes and buildings of the high Seventeenth century peak of Dutch power. The portraits are all of recognisable human beings - successful merchants and their families mainly. The high point for me are the marine paintings - I'm a sucker for both of the van der Velde family, and pictures of East Indiamen and coastal jachts in troubled seas. I spent twenty minutes in front of one big canvas.

There is a very limited selection of postcards (a shame), and a lovely cafe that used to be open in the courtyard to the back of the building is closed at the moment - waiting for a new tenant.

Unreservedly recommended for a visit - for both the building itself, and for the art collection.
