Pan American market is closed. Now a very upmarket tribal interiors store. So disappointed. Does anyone know where they have moved to ?

Find all of Africa in the heart of the Mother City. Incredible experience. Three stories of small shops filled with collectibles from all over Africa. My favorite the colourful fabrics and clothing from west africa. do not miss out on a visit the this beautiful building and market.

Popped in just to brows and were quickly seen as such and ignored by most of the sellers. Once they saw we were not interested in buying they left us alone. There goods on offer were so many and so various it would be difficult to pick out an item unless you had an idea of what you wanted before entering. Still good for a wander just to see what artists regard as saleable.

Together with the designer I designed a costum made skirt and top. I paid 100 euros and they said it would be ready in four days. After a month it still wasn't ready... By that time I had to catch my plane back to Holland because I were on holidays in SA. A friend of mine went to the store to pick up my order since I left the country. When she arrived at the store they still had to finish the clothing pieces. She was ofcourse super anoyed and had to come back to the store for the second time. The second time she received the skirt and top and brought it back to me in Holland. When I checked my order the skirt didn't fit (they took all my measurements) and the top wasn't what we designed at all but instead another design that I don't want to wear.

I have tried this place several times. I will not do it again. Pushy vendors. Prices appear to be a secret. I would pass on these African craft stores including the African craft market on 62 Long street, where the owner has no idea what customer service is like. They do not give Tax invoices for Vat, do not accept returns and are pricier than other places. You are better off at Tribal collections.

Walking along on Longstreet, you just cannot avoid passing or running into this hot spot of native African art.
Pan African Market is a huge building with three stories jammed, and when I use this term, I really mean it, it’s jampacked to the ceiling with handmade crafts.
We were not so interested in fabrics, or all the little adds and odds on display, and ignored more or less the beauty of the wooden/pumpkin Zulu bowls with all their unique colorful motives- because we wanted to pile up our African mask collection at home, and we were on the hunt to finally call some of the masks of higher quality our own.
The dealers there were all extremely friendly and I think we made a fair trade with all of them, because I really started to like to battle out the price I was willing to pay, and specially in one case, I left the shop twice and finally got my object of desire on the third day Of baganing

Interessant mal durch zu gehen, aber ansonsten das gleiche Angebot wie auf der Straße nur zu höheren Preisen. Man hat uns das so begründet das die Standmieten höher sind aber auch die Qualität. Zudem steht die Ware nicht den ganzen Tag in der prallen Sonne und sieht somit besser aus, das ist allerdings die Meinung des Verkäufers. Was mich bisschen gestört hat sind die schmutzigen Gänge in denen sogar haufenweise Kakerlaken herumlagen.

This is an interesting market full of various stalls selling all types of keep sakes and much much more. This market has it all - beaded crafts, radios made from recycled soda cans, hand made crafts, tons and tons of African masks - it is hard to know if any are real or if they are just recently made replicas - we got mixed information as to where they were from - one vendor would say that they were form a certain country and another would tell us something completely different. They were very expensive but when you bargained or tried to walk way they would drop the prices way down (they were still expensive but not the crazy beginning price) leading me to think that they were indeed not actual ancient masks. The vendors are quite aggressive in here and it can be uncomfortable - they start out very friendly and say hello and ask how you are and if you look at something or ask about something it is all over - they do everything they can to get you to buy it - it can be very hard to walk away. I just said I was fine and asked how they were and replied that I was looking around and not ready to buy anything yet. On the top floor there is a nice art studio featuring the work of local artists - we liked some and met the artist and came back the next day and bought it - he took it out of the frame and rolled it up and wrapped it well for the plane ride home. We were able to use a credit card although at first he did not want us to - we went to a store in the neighborhood and used it there. We did find some wonderful little hand made stuff for our daughter here. It is worth a visit but just be prepared for the pressure put on you to buy - in every stall! You do have to walk up lots of stairs and there are winding stalls on different floors and it can feel a bit overwhelming but we never felt unsafe.

Ótimo lugar para compras de souvenirs e objetos de decoração e culturais de diversas tribos africanas. Todos os vendedores são ótimos para negociar descontos e barganhas se você comprar mais itens na mesma loja.
Este mercado contém diversos stands em 3 andares diferentes.
Se você estiver procurando por máscaras este é o lugar. Você pode ir direto ao 2° (segundo) andar, virando a esquerda e subindo meio lance de escadas, a 1a (primeira) loja a sua esquerda, pertence a um jovem senhor que têm todo tipo de máscaras e é ótimo para negociar.
Este mercado contém diversos stands em 3 andares diferentes.
