Just not that good. After all of the good reviews and a specific recommendation, we were totally underwhelmed with the ostrich and filet mignon mains. the salad was quite good and the location and setting was lovely in an old Victorian home.

A éviter absolument.

Pictures on tripadsor and viator not true and updated. Hartbroken and disappointed to see the neglect of a once proud heritage. Simple things like mowing the lawn, painting the building. Why have private parties on the lawn, where are the guards?Guides dressed in proper clothing? Put Jan and Maria' statues here at their home?

I recently visited my family which included three generations and we all enjoyed the visit. This had a lot to do with our tour guide, Derrick, who is an encyclopedia of information on the Castle and shared its history in an entertaining and engaging way. I highly recommended taking a guided tour with him to get a solid overview of the Castle, its history, and guidance on how to further explore the venue on your own. Derrick is deeply committed to the preservation of the Castle and its history and told us about how they have been able to generate income by working with production companies to use the Castle as a film set (including for the Woman King). Given how interested our family was in the history of the site, Derrick kindly offered to give us a behind the scenes tour of a few other areas of the Castle and introduced our ten-year old son to a colleague who builds models of tanks and other military paraphernalia, including for the museum's displays. My son was absolutely captivated. Even though it was a cold, dreary day, we spent several more hours walking around and visiting the various museums/displays within the Castle. My son enjoyed the tour so much that he insisted on going back to say goodbye to Derrick and his colleague before we left.

My husband and I walked here from the district 6 museum a few minutes away and arrived at about 2.40pm. We paid 50zar each to get in and asked about guided tours but was told the last one was at 2pm. The lady pointed to a very basic map of the site and said we could take a photo to help guide our way around.
We went through to the main court yard and had our lunch on a bench, noticing a few staff members dotted around who mainly looked to be on their mobile phones. We then tried to navigate our way around, trying to open various closed doors to no avail.
We did go up some steps to the top of the walls and get a few photos of table top mountain before heading back down. We read a few mounted information boards which had a little information about some buildings and features such as the pool and went into the torture room which consisted of one mounted cat of nine tails whip. One stocks and a cellar, which was pitch black with the light not working. We also climbed two flights of outdoors stairs to an open door only to find some sort of private conference or meeting going on. We then spent a few minutes in the art collection rooms and headed towards the militarily museum section at 3.30 only to see a staff member locking the doors. When we asked why, she said that section was owned by a different museum, which shut at a different time. We were not told this when we arrived. Otherwise, would have headed there first. The information offered about any of the exhibits was kept to a bear minimal, and there were no staff around that seemed willing to tell you more or navigate you. Surely, printing out an A4 black and white map indicating where exhibits are (and closing times!) would help tourists!
Over-all spent about an hour there and 15 minutes of that was eating our packed lunch. Most staff seemed uninterested and were on their phone and despite saying it closes at 5pm it was pretty clear they wanted people to leave at about 3.30. The most helpful thing staff did for us was ring a taxi for us to get back to our hotel! Waste of time and money.

Admission is inexpensive, around $2.50. We were able to get in on the noon guided tour. They call this a castle but it is actually an old fort built in the 1600s. It is huge. Our guide began in the museum then took us to the officers quarters, the jail, dungeon and torture chamber.
There are other museums within the fort. One is the governor’s home. It is furnished with items from the 17th through the 19th centuries. There is a huge table on the second floor that would serve dozens of people. There is also an art gallery. There is lots of stair climbing.

We enjoyed the visit to the castle/fort, the tour guide was informative and very funny. Parking for the castle was not easy to find, signage should be improved.

I really enjoyed the Castle. The guide was excellent, so informative and entertaining. The museums are well done and interesting, there's an amazing pottery exhibition, and so much to explore. Would highly recommend and would go back.

The building is well-preserved and there is quite some information to be found about its history but its not presented in a modern or organized way. Room for improvement.

We enjoyed touring this castle! We almost skipped it because of negative reviews. We actually went to the District 6 Museum first, and then walked directly to the castle. That brought us in the front entrance, which was nice and had plenty of uniformed officers (since part of this castle is still used today for military). When we were inside, we could look down from the top of the walls to the back side. We never saw this coming in, but that back are was taken up by a homeless camp that looked run down. I think some of the negative reviews may have been people who parked on the other side and had to walk through that area and didn't feel safe. We felt very safe walking here on busy streets from the District 6 Museum. I say all this, because we are so glad we did not skip the castle due to other reviews. Our experience was very positive. There were several small museums with good signage and interesting history. The free guided tour is a great addition and highly recommended. We spent about 2 1/2 hours here. We also took a break and had a sandwich and cup of tea at the cafe inside the castle. If you like history, the Castle of Good Hope is a worthwhile place to visit.

It would be helpful for me to plan my time in Cape Town to know
1. How long does the guided tour take?
2. Approximately how much time might it take to see the whole site?
Note the link on the Castle website to book does not work!

Castle Tour with a castle guide is on the hour i think. The key ceremony us at 10 followed by the 1st canon fire, then 11 and 12 another fire. Think sunday amd Mondays they do not fire the gun. Do not know about the key ceremony. No need to book anything in advance. Best is to do with a castle guide who get tips from the guests. Or get a tour guide who can do a city tour and you get a broader experience of bits and pieces of town. Time at castle normally 1 to 1.5 hours.

I will be in Cape Town in August for a week. I know the castle is home to the Cape Town Highlanders and I wanted to know when the boys attend for their parade. I know they wear the Gordon tartan and as a former soldier in Australia who served in a Scottish Regiment who also wore the Gordon colours I would like to see them.

Hi there. Does anyone know how long the renovations will be ongoing?

Hi. Yes, the renovations should have been finished in October 2015, but as with most projects they end up over running time and budget.
I would say they will most likely only finish mid-2016.
