I went there five years ago to research the vlei as a tourism destination. I enjoyed the birdlife and educational facilities and of course the view towards Table Mountain! As accessibility is an important aspect which Incar Travel Guide always include in our advice to people with special needs, I found the following obvious shortcomings for people in wheelchairs.
While the long walkway to the hide was a very welcome feature I was once again surprised at the little thinking that went into its design. A roller can eventually get to the hide, only to get stuck at the steps at the entrance which is impossible for them to manage!
Secondly, the maintenance of the walkway was poor. There was no ramp to the walkway at its beginning. A section was obviously missing for a very long time. I suspected that when it gets repaired, it will be with steps, because, once again, no thought would be given to rollers.
Surely guys, why do you want people with special needs EXCLUDED! What have they done to you!?
I sincerely trust that these problems had been rectified over the past 5 years!

Used to be a nice place to have a day outing but these days not so much. Would love to be able to fish there often but there is almost never any space.

We went there on Fri 10 November in the afternoon. We paid at the gate but no one advised us that one needs to walk a long distance to the hides!!! No maps/ no information whatsoever was offered.
When we reached the boom gate and walked some distance realizing that my friend won't manage the walk all the way to the hide we returned. At the gate we were greeted by a serious ATTITUDE problem by both the guys at the gate, upon asking our money back on the basis that we were not informed from the start about the situation! It could have been such a lovely outing ending up in a frustration. People seriously need to get training in people skills. Information should be offered about the terrain etc from the start and maps etc should be available!!

Rietvlei and its bird hides are a long-time family favourite. While we went early this time it was shaping up to be a scorcher of a day. Clouds of what seemed to be mosquitos was everywhere and miniscule spider-webs were floating over the boardwalk. There was lots of birds, especially on the fynbos and reeds, but beware, the many types of LBJs will drive you nuts, mostly warblers and cisticolas. Take a picnic and chill out in a hide or next to the lake. If you are really lucky you might see an otter or mongoose.

We live on the edge of the reserve. Fortunate for us we are able to experience the many wonders of the reserve which may not be experienced in one visit. The reserve has masses of flamingos and pelicans which take their daily flight right over our house. It is a sight to behold. There is a walkway that passes in front of our house and the sight can be enjoyed by all. There are a couple of bird hides as well where you can sit and observe some small birds and geese and duck. Windsurfing is also allowed on the vlei. A pleasant walk around the edge of the reserve takes about 1 -2 hours and many people take their dogs. They must be on a leash and are not allowed around the bird hide area. Pleasant visit to a green spot in the middle of the build up neighbourhoods.

Rietveld Wetland Reserve is magnificent with really excellent facilities, BUT, if you go there in summer be sure you go early in the morning. The reserve is exposed to the Vals Bay and Atlantic sides and when the wind picks up in the afternoon you can forget your birdwatching. We saw some good bird though, and we enjoyed watching the windsurfers relishing the gale force winds.

We took the family, including grandparents and children, to the two bird hides on the Rietvlei nature reserve. The bird hides are accessible by raised wooden walkways and the experience was great. Definitely take binoculars or zoom lens camera. Bird life is fabulous. There is a picnic area with tables and benches along the side of the vlei. Kids are keen to go back again to try out fishing on the vlei shore. Very peaceful.

Very nice reserve to visit when in Cape Town. Take a picnic and sit on the water's edge, watching the abundant bird life fly by.

Schön für Vogelliebhaber. Vielfalt ist sicherlich jahreszeitenabhängig. Unbedingt Fernglass/Teleobjektiv mitbringen!
