Tripadvisors tilnærming til anmeldelser

It's quite a long way and you're never sure if you can continue, but you can almost go up to the top. So it's only a few hundred meters to the top. Quite slippery and wear good shoes!

I know this Mountain like the palm of my hand. It is not like your general hiking route. Rather, it is clean with easy, medium and hard routes. One can start your walk to the rock (or maybe not even to the rock but rather just an easy level route) from the amphi theatre. Or, you can start at Frater square and look forward to a bootleggers coffee afterwards. At the top of Houtstraat, there is a steep walk to the Meulwater braai area just below Paarl Rock. Another option is coming in from Northern Paarl. However, I will only suggest that if you are seated on a bicycle saddle because the route is less graceful. It is between 3-6km to the rock (depending on the route you take) from Meulwater campsite to Paarl Rock.

We did this hike with ages 9-50. It was just wonderful. Not too easy or hard. And the views are amazing. There are many different trails we did the one right at the entrance gate.

The drivable routes inside the reserve amount to around 25 km. Most of them can be driven in a regular sedan, but some are badly eroded and a vehicle with high ground clearance is highly recommended.
There are three large granite domes in the reserve: Paarl Rock, Bretagne and Gordon's Rock. The former can be climbed by families including children, but Bretagne is too dangerous for small children unless they are tethered to adults. Gordon's Rock can only be climbed by skilled mountaineers.
There are three picnic sites in or near the reserve and the ablution facilities were neat and tidy during my visit.
You have to pay to enter on weekends and public holidays but entry is free during the week.

A must do over the weekend
No excuses. You can visit this by car, on foot, with a bicycle. Alone or with friends. And the experience will be divine. You and nature, nothing else. Just come...
Enjoy the picturesque landscape of fynbos vegetation dominated by massive rounded granite rock formations set among wild olives, rock candlewoods and wagon trees. Take a vigorous hike, or climb Bretagne Rock, follow one of the many hiking trails, visit Mill water Wild Flower Garden where numerous species of Proteas may be viewed, catch a bass at Nantes dam or enjoy mountain biking, picnics and panoramic views of the Drakenstein valley.
Entry fees Entry is R30 per occupant in a vehicle payable at the reserve’s main gate.
Entry is free during the week.
Buy your map with the mountain’s MTB and hiking routes at the Paarl Visitors Information Centre at R50.
Directions
As you enter Paarl Main Road via the N1 from CT, take a left at the off-ramp. Follow Paarl Main Road, go straight over the first robot and then left at the first road on your left hand side (Jan Phillips Mountain Drive). Follow this road for approximately 6kms until you get to the Meulwater day braai & picnic site. Alternatively, follow the road leading up to the Afrikaans Language Monument (Gabbema Doordrif Road) and take the dirt road turning off to the right (Jan Phillips Mountain Drive) leading past the Amphi theatre, until you reach the Meulwater day braai & picnic site picnic area.

Not kid friendly, with sheer unprotected drops all around, the walk up is challenging and fun. Chains are installed where the gradient is steep, but the view from the top is breathtaking.

What a treat to get out and about after lockdown! Took our kids for a hike and it was great to be outside again after many months in lockdown. I’m so grateful for this beautiful natural space.

Went on a wonderful hike at the Paarl mountain nature reserve. There are many different routes to choose from. The 360 ° panoramic views overlooking the Paarl valley and surrounds were extraordinary and we could even see Table mountain in the distance. It is a relatively easy climb/walk although their are a few steep hills. We had a map but the routes however were very poorly marked and most of the time we had to find/make our own way.

You certainly can walk with a pram. Just make sure it's a pram with large wheels as tiny wheels may not work. If you stay on the gravel paths and the wider hiking trails it's a yes.

Is there anywhere to hire mountain bikes and bike the routes?
Skrevet 16. mars 2017
Hello, we didn't stay in Paarl but I would be amazed if there was nowhere to hire bikes there. A bike hire place can be found in Franschoek on the main street (if you have a car with a bike rack).
