Fantastic trip. Amazing views and we even saw a burro on the side of the road who came and said.hello! Some hair-raising twists, turns and drops but all part of the fun.

After leaving the Nevada we decided to do a stopover on our way home to Oatman, AZ. The drive to Oatman was a bit out of our way, but we were anxious to see the Burros abandoned by miners after the mining operations stopped in the early 1900's. The town is a tourist town that is still thriving due to the daily visits from the Donkeys or Burros. The Donkeys walk through the town every day and receive numerous amounts of food from the tourists that is sold in the town. They are cute and very tame. They are worth a visit. Once we finished feeding them, we proceeded out of town down a very a very white-knuckle road called Oatman road or old route 66. This road is not for the faint of heart as the road has few barriers keeping you from going over a cliff. If you go very slow and proceed with caution it is okay.

A great section of Route 66 to negotiate.
As you leave Kingman behind you and drive West the mountains rear up in front and the road seems to disappear. And then you start climbing upwards, with every twist and turn there’s a part of you that questions why there aren’t wrecked cars strewn below as there are very few barriers and I’m sure not everyone respects the 15 mph speed limit.
It’s definitely an experience not to be missed in daylight! Not something I’d want to be doing once night falls

People who have created a near-religion about "Route 66" should be forced to drive from Kingman, to Oatman over the Sitgreaves Pass.
That will provide an excellent education as to why pre-war cars were designed the way they were. A hint - there is a reason why pre-war cars, especially for the lower to middle classes, were geared so low; why their steering asseblies were engineered the way they were. A hint....35 mph. would be wildly reckless on much of that drive!

Twisty and narrow. Lots of switchbacks. Some parts of the road need replacing. Saw lots of bikes. Drive slow and watch for bikers and burros!

We drove through in early April after the rains and it was wonderful experience to see flowering desert. You can stop at many places to get view and take small hike. This must be the time of the year to visit.

I love this trip! Great scenery but be careful driving and walking. A lot of twist and turns in the road, narrow spots and steep drop offs. It’s worth it for the breathtaking views!

Route 66! This might be the best road in AZ. Its a bit skinny and has a few rough spots but its windy, hilly, and has amazing views. No guard rails so don't go off the edge. Some parts are a LONG ways down!

An amazingly scenic slow drive on the old Route 66. Donkeys wander the road along with slow moving cars on the twisty road.

Will be starting route 66 from Santa Monica and going eastwards. Does this mean we would be driving against the hillside rather than the drop? My husband will be driving but I hate heights.

When traveling from California to Cool Springs you will be on the inside lane beside the mountains. I've heard the views are better coming from Oatman to Cool Springs from several of the locals there. I have driving the road 3 times always from Cool Springs towards California and was in awe of the views each time. You won't be disappointed, just make sure to have time so you can pull over and take pictures. Have a great drive and safe travels.

am going from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, leaving early am on 4-3. Planning to come back down to stay overnight at Kingman, then up early am on 4-4 back to Vegas, to arrive at McCarren Airport by 1pm for flight back to Texas. Is any way to go through the Pass, from Kingman and arrive at Airport by 1 pm, or is somewhere else could stay overnight between Kingman and Vegas in order to go via the pass? My family drove Rte 66 in 1953, from St. Louis to Albuquerque, when we moved there from Charleston W.V.! I Loved the motels along the way!! Actually have driven 66 from Albuquerque to Calif as well. It may sound crazy, but many times I miss much of those years, the 50's & 60's, was a teen ager, and life was so much calmer, less stress, slower, more polite, respect, considerate, joyful!

If you make your trip from Kingman and go over the pass, it means you are going to go through Oatman and you will want to stop there. However if you just pass through Oatman and go down to 95 business through Bullhead to 163 up 163 to to 95 and then through Searchlight and on to Vegas you are going to be rolling hard. If you have to catch a flight a 1pm then you have to be there by 11:30 or 12. Personally, I would just head back up 93 and save Oatman and the pass for a later trip.

I will be starting from Sun City Arizona and want to end up at the Grand Canyon. Not sure how to get there going through Sitgreaves pass and Route 66.

I am unsure of where you are headed for in the Grand Canyon, but Oatman appears to be out of the way as Oatman is halfway between Kingman and the CA border.
From the Grand Canyon you could head south toward I-40 and Williams, pick up Rte. 66 and head west. Rte. 66 will go through Kingman and the Oatman Highway signs will continue you on 66 and over the pass to Oatman. (The reverse of what I have written below.) As a separate trip, as there is plenty to do, head to Needles and you can take Rte. 66 across the top of AZ. A few suggestions of places to take in, that I have checked out a few times, are included.
If you want a drive and a trip on 66 - what I did the last time was starting from Laughlin. Took 95 south (Topcock Dam Road) to Needles. From there I headed east on Boundary Cone Road (#153 on mapquest) which fed into Oatman-Topcock HIghway (Mapquest shows it as #10). It takes you through Oatman and then climbs up the mountain and over Sitgreaves Pass. (Cool Springs Station looked closed on my trip a year ago. Don't know if that was just bad timing on my part or if it is has closed.) Eventually, the road puts you into Kingman where there is a section of Rte. 66 with museums and shops. You can follow Rte. 66 through Kingman (Andy Devine Rd.) out toward the airport. Along the way there is a distillery where they make rum. The tour was short but the folks are friendly. After that is Hackberry which has an old general store that was part of the Rte. 66 history. Continue on 66 and you can take in the Grand Canyon Cavern tour in Peach Springs. Onward from there continue on Rte. 66, and you are in Seligman, then Ash Fork. You can then head south on 89 towards Prescott or continue east on Rte. 66/I-40 to Flagstaff.

I will be traveling Route 66 from Seligman towards Kingman before heading up to the Hoover Dam. Will I pass Sitgreaves Pass along the way? It looks neat, but I don't want to go out of the way to reach it.

Kingman, AZ47 bidrag
The Answer is yes and no.
From Seligman on Route 66 will take you to Kingman.
Most people get on I40 to US 93 that goes to LV. Boulder City and the Hoover Dam are along 93.
From Kingman, you could continue through town and out to Oatman on 66. The pass is between Kingman and Oatman.
From Oatman, continue to Bullhead City, cross the bridge to Laughlin NV and take US 95 to Boulder City.
95 will drop you north of the Dam, but only a 15 minute ride.
You'll have to exit the highway to drive on the Dam.
Oatman will be a side trip of its own. Wild donkeys roam the street and are friendly to those with bags of food.
66 becomes a mountain pass of 100 years ago from an old stone gas station to Oatman. It's not just the pass, it's the entire road that is amazing. It's a dangerous road so be careful. The backside of the pass is covered with Cross at each opportunity point.
If you read some of Steinbeck's book the Grapes of Wrath. .. it helps make the place speak the history of the Route.

Yes, it will be a long day. Take Hway 93 to Kingman, AZ. Visit the Route 66 Museum there. Follow the signs as you approach town. It's on the right. It will greatly enhance your ride over Sitgreaves Pass. The folks at the museum will tell you how to get to Route 66 from there. The pass is ok for cars, but slow going. Be sure to stop in Oatman and feed the burros. Just past Oatman, turn and go to Bullhead City, Then follow the signs to Hway 95 and back to Boulder City.
