I just completed the Beginner Watercolor Class with John Erwin. It was a great class - John showed us many different techniques that you can use with water-color paints, including how to use more or less water when painting with watercolors, different techniques for applying the paint beyond a brush, the best use of different brushes, how to add texture to the painting and how to 'remove' paint to lighten it. You came away with multiple pieces that you can frame, use as postcards, etc. The class is very small - only 8 students total. We all got to know each other really quickly, exchanging ideas about each other's work, as well as other artistic happenings around Phoenix.

Just returned from Family Fun Night Water Color class with John Erwin at Shemer Art Center.
Had so much fun learning how to water color in 2 hours.
What a great way to spend a hot evening in Phoenix.
Sooooo want to do another class!

Thoroughly enjoyable. Located in what was once a private home on lovely grounds. Small, intimate museum that focuses mostly on sculpture - both large and small. Donation requested but not required for entry. Free parking.

Shemer Art Center is one of those hidden treasures right under your nose. It's a great place to take a art class, take in one of there art festivals, shop for gifts at there gift shop and enjoy the featured artist in the 3 galleries. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy it on there grounds.
November 1st is Sunday at Shemer Art Festival from 10-5.
This year Arizona Glass Alliance will be there with glass artists and a portable hot shop.
Don't miss this event!

We went for the Micro Dwell exhibit 2015. We really enjoyed that particular exhibit and found it interesting. We did catch some of the sculptures they had in the garden at the entrance but apart from those and the MicroDwell exhibit we didn't really see much other art. The museum itself was really small. It was easy to get to for the MicroDwell and there was ample parking as it was the last weekend of the exhibit it was quite busy. I don't think we would go back unless they held another big exhibit and we were in the area doing other things though...

We really enjoyed touring the wide range of little houses that are displayed to demonstrate sustainable living. It is amazing to see spaces as small as 64 sq. Ft. that includes everything that one needs. There is one partially completed house that i being built out of Styrofoam, another that looks like a tent and yet another that is on wheels and can be towed by a truck. VERY SMALL but has queen bed, dining rm, kitchen, closet beneath stairs and even a commode and shower. YOU MUST SEE. We plan on going out again this week to see if the Styrofoam house is completed. The cost is $5 p/person

We did not love the art at the Shemer Art Center, but we found the micro dwelling exhibit fascinating. There were several examples of different types of very tiny dwelling and we enjoyed seeing how one could maximize the living space in them.

My husband and I attended the Micro Dwell 2014 event at the Shemer Art Center in Phoenix in the Arcadia neighborhood. Even though we had our young daughter and a large stroller, we were welcome at the facility. The staff was friendly and helpful and seemed very proud to be working or volunteering at the event. After viewing the innovative micro dwellings, we took our daughter out of the stroller so we could view the Micro Art that was also on display. Everyone was kind and allowed us to leave the stroller outside and offered to keep an eye on it.
This is a beautiful home and the art within the galleries was captivating! It was so refreshing to see that the art community is well and alive in Phoenix. I was so happy this experience was my daughter's first chance to visit an art gallery. The Shemer center also offers art classes, and I hope to take one someday! Whether you are a local, or visiting, Shemer is worth the visit!

I recently took a metal and enamel class here with Larry as the instructor. The class was great, as well as the instruction. The grounds and historic home are beautifully located at the foot of nearby mountain ranges. I would recommend a class or at least a visit to anyone interested in the arts.
