Had some time to kill on a Saturday so around 11AM left for the Phoenix Mountain Preserve to hike on the Quartz Ridge Trail. I didn’t think there would be too many people since it was over 80 degrees but I was very wrong. Lots of people. Got the last parking spot in a very tiny lot. And they allow dogs which made it sooooo much worse. Why would a preserve allow eco-destroying dogs???
Clear signage says dogs must be on a leash but the majority of the idiots with dogs had them off leash. It is infuriating when morons force their dogs on a rocky hike on a hot day. The rocks hurt their paws and you try walking for miles in a heavy fur coat and see how you like it. I wasn’t even there an hour because I was so disgusted. Once I came upon a pit bull, I decided to turn around and go back. Don’t need to see any of these off leash dogs get attacked.
And even if there had been no dogs to scare away all the wildlife and poop all over the place, this trail wasn't that great anyway. Not particularly scenic. I live in the desert and enjoy desert hikes, but there was very little vegetation on this trail at all. Only a couple of blooming cactus. Anywhere else in the spring there would be wildflowers all over the place. Not here. Perhaps if I had gone to the top I'd be more appreciative of the view, but there was really nothing to see. Perhaps another trail in the preserve would be better.

As a family of 15 spending thanksgiving in Scottsdale, we wanted to find a family friendly hike as we had wide age group from 8 yrs to 70 yrs. Quartz ridge ended up being the perfect hike for us.
It's only a 10 to 15 min drive from scottsdale (depending on where you are staying). However, the parking lot is small with no overflow options so you need to plan accordingly. We ended up getting here around 9 AM and luckily the parking lot was empty.
The hike is rocky through out (def wear closed toed shoes) and has a bit of an incline but it's manageable. Some of us had hiking boots on but most others had tennis shoes and were fine. Some of us also weren't very prepared for the hike and didn't carry enough water. Even though we went in November, on a clear day the sun does get hot. Be prepared with at least 1L of water per person, even kids. I would also carry a snack or two as you may need a bit of refreshment once you reach the top.
Note that the hike continues past the peak so if you want to reach the end to turn back around, you def. can but we stopped at the peak as it looked liked a good stopping point. Also, once you reach the peak, there are couple of benches for you to sit. There is also a small dirt path past the benches you can take to climb up a few rocks for a slightly higher view.
Overall, it probably took us 2 hours to do the hike as the grandparents were a bit slower. Also note that there's a small part of the hike (towards the top) where you are walking along the edge of the mountain. It's not difficult at all but it requires you to be a bit more careful and the grandparents were a bit scared so had to hold their hand.

Wonderful lush desert and incredible views while hiking this trail. A moderate hike about 3+ miles long. The Quartz is a nice place to stop and set an intention.

The views were beautiful! We don't get to hike as much as we'd like to. This was a fun and challenging hike for beginners. Bring water! There are two benches toward the top. Gradual ascent except for a few steep places toward the top. Loved it! Would recommend it!

I hike camelback typically, so the comparison will be against a more challenging hike. This is a good choice for a quicker, more relaxed hike which still provides a decent view of the valley. The phoenix mtn park is dry with not much vegetation - so if you are not from the phx area this hike will definitely look bleak.
The trailhead parking is tight. Although not enouraged by the businesses you can park in the strip mall across lincoln and walk to the trailhead. And, if you want starbucks before of after there you are - you could even take an evening hike and visit a restaurant for a cocktail after?

Go early before too hot and take more than enough water. Trails well marked. 8A is crowded in morning. Others are not.
Lots of great cacti and rock formations. The trails are in the middle of civilization, but you can easily get away from its sounds and sites.
