Kris Silas was a very knowledgeable tour guide. There are three villages atop First Mesa, several hundred feet above the valley. Walpi Village is over 1100 years old and only has 13 year round residents. It is primarily used for ceremonies and dances. Their festival season starts tonight so preparations were underway. Another village atop the mesa is Tewa which was a settled by Tewa peoples more than 300 years ago.

Kris discussed the origins of the Hopi peoples and their settling at this location. He studies the oral history of the Hopi and their culture. We enjoyed his tour greatly.

My friend and I (see jenkinsjua) drove to First Mesa, and were so lucky that upon arrival folks suggested we visit Kris and hire him for a tour. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Walpi (being from there and a resident) and the surroundings. He was also just affable and a nice guy to talk to. I am grateful for the experience.

Kris Silas is a wonderful guide to the ancient village of Walpi, where he lived as a child and still has cultural and religious responsibilities. He is a masterful guide to the history and culture of the Hopi people, and integrates oral tradition and his own research into the walk through the village. This is one of the world's very special places and it is a privilege to be invited in to learn about Hopi culture.

Previous reviewers have given you all of the historical information that you need to convince you that this is someplace worth visiting. I can only add my comments: First Mesa Tours is located in the Polacca Post Office-get directions! Our guide, Chris, grew up in Walpi and knows its history well. He is one of the younger generation who is delving into his roots and is proud of his heritage-as well he should be. He was an excellent guide. This was a very inspiring glimpse into our nation's history.

We enjoyed our tour through the village tours office. Our guide had grown up in Walpi and was able to provide a personal view of the village and its history. This is a fascinating site and a great way to learn about an important culture of the Southwest. We recommend this for an off the beaten path experience.

1,200 years ago the Hopi Tribe arrived in this area of Central Arizona, fulfilling a migration journey that is an amazing story of how modern man emerged from the previous world and journeyed together as a tribe across North and South America. This is the genesis story of The American Indian and when you think of ancient ruins and Anasazi, we are also talking about the connection to The Hopi. They are descendants of The Anasazi. And they are still living in the same villages that they established over 1,200 years ago! That’s 700 years before Columbus! This is essential American history everyone needs to know and visiting Walpi is the best way to learn about it firsthand. Make it part of your next SouthWest Road Trip but plan in advance and call to find out the time and availability of tours. We lucked out and went on a tour right after lunch hour. We drove up to Polacca and to The Hopi Center & Tourism office and found out that a native Hopi guide, Chris, was going to lead a tour at 1PM. The cost was $20 per person and the tour lasts approximately 90 minutes. It’s so unique and cool IF you are interested in learning about American Indian history, culture, tradition. But not if you are looking for a Disney Land experience or a touristy gift shop. This is genuine and you need to be very respectful of the rules. What is so significant about Walpi? Walpi is the longest continuously inhabitated settlement in The United States and you can visit it on foot (no cars and no cameras) but only with a guide. There are now only a handful of families still living full-time high on 1st Mesa in Walpi. You will meet some of them and have a chance to try their food and see their arts and crafts. Including Kachina Dolls and pottery. Walpi was originally established in this location for defensive purposes and provides a 360 degree view for hundreds of miles. Hopi are Pueblo Indians and a visit to Walpi will show you real Pueblo dwellings and you can learn about Hopi culture and tradition from your guide. Our 16-year old daughter was amazed by everything she saw and learned on the tour as were Mom and Dad. She had recently read in her AP American History about The Pueblo Revolt and Apache, Hopi & Navajo Tribes. Seeing the village in person made a huge impression. The views from Walpi are incredible and we will never forget being there. It was both ancient and yet still alive and powerful. It gives you a new and different perspective on what it means to be an American. Go!

Our Hopi guide Anna, which is a requirement to visit Walpi, was excellent. Very interesting and informative. We paid $50.00 US for a group of 4. The view from Walpi which dates from the 13th century was magnificent. The ancient houses were a highlight. Takes a good 45 minutes to tour the village.
No photos are allowed at the village.
Wear walking shoes. Take water. The guide will take you to get registered before going up to the village.
We didn’t buy any crafts but they looked interesting.
Definitely a must do if you love exploring and history.
