The Fort Huachuca Museum is very interesting and informative about the history of the fort and the soldiers who were stationed there. The museum was recently reopened after an extensive renovation. The reason for the fort being established in the first place and the role it has served through the years is all shown and detailed. From the Indian Wars through two World Wars through Viet Nam, Desert Storm to present day. A must see if you are in the area.

According to locals, this museum was recently redone. Once you get clearance to get on base follow the signs.. DO NOT ask for directions, we found that the two we asked probably hadn't been to the museum. backtracking to signs we found and visited the museum and annex. The annex has the original drone and a good replica of aviation and drone history. The museum has a well done walk through history for this fort which includes the surrender of Geronimo, the American Indian wars, Pancho Villa and the great contribution of the Buffalo Soldiers and Indian Scouts. well worth the time and effort to get on base.

Stopped to see this museum and was astonished by the history. I have never heard of the Buffalo Soldiers or the fort. The museums are situated in 3 different buildings so do not miss any of them. Goes from the Horse Soldiers into today's function and each museum is loaded with info and displays.

The Buffalo soldier museum. We went here with such great expectations! We were so very disappointed in this museum to what is such an amazing part of our country's military history. The displays were very nice, albeit simple. Info related to each display would add a huge missing component, not just seeing a Buffalo soldier on a horse, tell me about the uniform, what he has on his saddle, when and if horses were used all of the time, where they were kept relative to the museum, yes a map. The soldier on duty was very sweet, but knew nothing about the displays and when he called the non military expert, he know nothing as well. Really this guy is paid to curate and he was looking up information on his cell phone to answer my questions about items on the displays. I feel someone who has a passion for this period should be doing this. The soldier, in uniform, on duty should only be there if he has been trained or done research on it. Please hire a curator who is passionate, knows his own displays and can even add info as he shares what he knows. This guy, so sorry but what a disappointment.
The Militray Intelligence Museum on the other hand was amazing. The lady, who I learned in talking with her is former military was a wealth of information. The displays were thorough and complete within themselves. The audio in different tones and voices added interest and were very informative. Excellent and will recommend this museum to everyone.
The parade grounds based on the map were fine, it felt a bit like if we walked around we were intruding on people's homes. A clear path and signage would facilitate a much better experience with this part of the Fort.
The picnic area was not well marked but worth the trip up, it could use a good raking of the trash, but the view was excellent and the tables a nice addition.
We love our military so our disappointment in the Buffalo Museum was profound and we have already let several folks know go for the military intelligence museum for sure!
Well worth waiting to be cleared to get into the Fort.

Fort Huachuca has played an important role in the settling of West as well as its strategic role today. Still a working military base, you get a sense of military traditions, parade grounds, well-maintained officers' homes. Some excellent hiking trails, where you may see a flock of wild turkeys, deer, birds.

This is truly one of the neatest Early West Museums I have ever visited. It was significant in the United States western expansion and protection of early settlers. For me, what I found the most interesting was the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, a brigade comprised of Indian and Black soldiers and the significant role they played. The museum is of moderate size with many displays, etc. Unfortunately when I went to visit it again earlier this month, I found it to be temporally closed and couldn't find out when it planned to reopen. The review I'm providing is from several visits over the past 2 years when I go to visit my son stationed at the fort.

I hope it reopens soon so that others can visit this wonderful museum.

First, make sure you leave time to get your photo ID at the entrance gate.....it's a collector's item anyway. Once inside the gates, you are in an active military base that is actually the central command for Army Intelligence (perhaps an oxymoron but the museum proves otherwise). The Intelligence Museum is located in the Post Library and is a work in progress around different periods of technological and command evolution. Very unique and interesting. The Fort Museum in the historic area provides a great perspective on the "indian War" and also provides a good background on the Buffalo Soldiers. It is old school, for sure - more for small museum buffs but well worth it if you want to understand how the Southwest fits into US history.

There are two small museums on Fort Huachuca. The main post museum by the old parade grounds is an excellent look at the History of Southern Arizona and of the Fort. I should think it is of special interest to African-Americans in that a portion is dedicated to The Buffalo Soldiers and other African American units of the U.S. Army. The Military Intelligence Museum is very hard to find and is located in the rear of the Post Library (Learning Center)in the newer part of the post not far from the East Gate. It tells an interesting History of Military Intelligence Operations, Procedures and Technologies throughout American History. Note, that you must get permission and Visitor ID cards at the East Gate to enter the post. These are free and take about 10 to 20 minutes to get. A background check is run and you must present picture ID to get the pass cards. If you have a current DOD or Military ID I think you can enter through any open gate and do not need this visitor pass. I highly recommend these museums to anyone interested in History.

Since the day of heightened security, a visitor has to "apply" for entrance to Fort Huachuca Military Base in order to see this historic site. The "jumping through the hoops" is a minor inconvenience. Exploring the Fort's history by way of its three museums is well worth the effort! A visitor has the opportunity to really learn about the famous Buffalo Soldiers and their role in American history. Follow the Historical Old Post Audio Tour as you drive this self-guided route. This base is currently an important center for communication and electronic technological development as well as being the primary home of the US Army Intelligence Center. You will not regret taking the time to visit this area. Check the website or drop by the Sierra Vista Visitors Center to get current information to help you plan this visit.

This museum is small but has interesting and well-done exhibits about the history of this fort and the Buffalo Soldiers. The gift shop is surprisingly nice with a wide selection of nicer souvenirs.

We drove around the base looking for the museum (signage could be better). We were glad we didn't go directly to the museum, because it was interesting to see the base.

Although we had our security forms completed before we arrived, it did take about half an hour for the 5 of us (all senior citizens born in the US) to get clearance.
