The desert was beautiful. It was peaceful and just taking in was relaxing. It is worth stopping at even it is just for a minute or two.

This is a beautiful County park just north of Winslow.
If you don’t have time to traverse the Painted Desert/Petrified National Park, this will give you a brief taste of what you would see.

Unfortunately this County Park: the Little Painted Desert is quite neglected. The sign indicating the entrance is painted over with graffiti and we almost missed it (fortunately our gps announced our arrival. The trail around the rim is unpaved which is why we did not venture further. We parked and walked a short distance around the main “parking” area. The views were wonderful. Also there is no admission charge to enter the Little Painted Desert park.

It would be nice if the County/state actually maintained this little gem of a park. It’s worth the drive north if you’re in the Winslow area.

Way out away from anything. Very beautiful area about 20 miles outside Winslow on Navajo rez. Unfortunate that no organization is taking care of the park.

This is a beautiful, deserted land of feeling like you are on another planet. I was overwhelmed with the gorgeous views and wondered why the county and/or state doesn’t keep it up and make it more of a destination. Locals or onery passers by have dirtied up what used to be park facilities with graffiti and there is trash strewn about. Its a shame. Definitely would not want to be out there alone with as remote and creepily lonely as it feels. Roads are filled with potholes, so beware.

It was beautiful! It was starting to get too hot to take any of the trails. We did take one but it tough. Best to do during the winter season. I did get gorgeous pictures.

Drove the desolate drive out here from Winslow after dinner to see the sunset at 7pm.

The place was once a park, clearly, because there are a couple covered picnic tables.

We knew what to expect based on other reviews, so yeah. The sunset was cool, and the mini painted desert was very similar to the actual Painted Desert at the national park.

We saw, we conquered, we drove back. Haha

This was the best part of our Southwest trip!! It's technically abandoned - there are no services etc. But you can still drive in, park, and explore an amazing otherworldly landscape. The fact that no one has else is there is a huge plus. Our 6 year olds LOVED it

By chance I had saw this park that was listed in a couple places as abandoned but I saw a couple pictures and thought I'd give it a go.
I drove out to the Little Painted Desert County Park on State Route 87 about 20 miles north of Winslow. The road is straight out like something you would see in Monument Valley or some other lonely roads. I referenced Homolovi State Park. Which I had been to before. The Vista in that area is pretty amazing you can see all the way to the ski areas near Flagstaff and the Hopi Mesas. Because you have such an open area it's susceptible to high winds and I was there on a really windy day and could see this great groups of clouds pushing their way from Flagstaff. Touching the ground as they came and I then remembered even though the area was flat it was still at 5,000 ft. There's no real signage and I relied on my Google maps to get a sense of when the turn into the park. (GPS is accurate Painted Desert Rim Dr, Winslow, AZ 86047.)There is a block stone at the entrance that probably held the sign years ago but it's been graffiti painted over and over, at least three different gang signs around the block.

The road is pothole and rumble stripped as you approach the T in the road. There's a closed bathroom that also is a completely covered in graffiti art. There are two picnic areas that are cement so that they're still in pretty good shape unfortunately there's all kinds of trash everywhere. There's an actual road, gravel, rumble strips that goes along the rim of the canyon area where you can view the little Painted desert. Appropriately called painted desert rim drive There was no one there when I was visiting you're about maybe a ½ mile from highway 87 so every once in awhile you can see the lonely car or truck going by. But mostly you have silence or noise of the wind. I'm glad I was able to make this stop and didn't pass it by it's a very unique place. I'm sure the funding to maintain the park was cut at one time it must have been pretty easily accessible there's even some abandoned trails that go down to the bottom of the canyon you can see the railroad ties that were placed to provide steps to go down. I'm of the age that I won't hike down into a Badland area by myself and get lost or worse hurt. So I stayed up top and enjoy the views. I haven't been able to find the historical data on the park but with the risk management involved with the closeness of the road to the edge plus the lack of common sense in modern people hiking in the desert down to the bottom of the canyon and the distance of rescue people to come or the lack of regular police or ranger presence. I'm sure that those things factored into the closing of it. I'm glad I was just able to drive in and it was still open to people who really want to see it.
You have to use your common sense to see who might come by while you're there, the gang signs made me a little wary and kept Spidey senses turned on, but the views are stunning and it does remind me of the views that I had at the petrified National Forest. It was a great photo opportunity and I was just so grateful to be outside. Just a wonderful experience it was accessible for this old guy and I'm appreciative for it. And there's no cost.
