After an overnight in Prescott we were enroute to Wickenberg when we saw the sign for the Memorial.

We were familiar with the tragic story because of Jimmy Copacino's famous
ballad. Nothing could prepare us for the pathos of seeing those pictures of the
young firefighters and reading their stories.

Time did not permit the hike to the site of the tragedy but hope to do this on a future visit.

You simply must take this hike. Watch the movie first if possible, so you'll see the well-done, almost-accurate story beforehand. With 1700 feet of elevation change, it's not a super-easy hike, but the length is the only thing that makes this a moderate - to - challenging hike. Watch your footing, but there's no bouldering or rock-climbing on this trail. It's just a good workout. Stop and read each memorial along the trail, then hike down to the larger memorial at the site where these brave men perished. Take lots and lots of water, and plan on 4 - 5 hours for the full hike. A few snacks, too. Start early. The Park Ranger at the parking area was one of the most helpful rangers we've ever encountered. He knows this area well, and knows the history too. We met firefighters on the trail who were there to pay respects and leave a memento from their own fire service. Please do the same if you're in the fire service in any capacity. Be prepared for an emotional experience, unlike other hike you've ever done.

My husband and I loved the memorial but if your going you best start early and pack drinks and snacks. It is a heck of a hike. Don't assume it's not.

We travelled from Sedona to see this monument. Arrived to late in the afternoon to start the hike. We will be back to get it done. Rest In Peace brothers.

We were traveling with our dog, saw the sign and decided to check it out. The weather was beautiful in March with cool breezes but I would not do this hike in the heat of the summer as there is very little shade. The paths are well marked and covered with crushed gravel, making it easy to walk on. The scenery was absolutely breath-taking with fantastic overlooks. The tributes to the Hotshots created a peaceful feeling that allowed for reflection and gratitude. The other hikers on the trail were very friendly and we saw several firefighters and EMTs enjoying the hike as well. Parking is minimal and you will need to bring ample water. Our only problem was that our dog did not want to walk up or down the metal stairs at the very beginning of the hike.

Amazing Beauty, Beautiful Memorial, but hike not for the Amateur. We have watched the movie many times and it helped my son get his life refocused, we wanted to pay our respects and pray for the families of the brave fallen.

It took us 7 hours but we did stop at the top for lunch, we also had our uncle who had a knee replacement and 2 hip replacement and he made it the whole trip.

If you take the hike please be respectful and remember it’s more than a hike. Bring plenty of water also.

Wonderful memorial.

This is a not an easy hike. Worth the trip to pay tribute to the fallen firefighters.

The hike took us about 3.5 hours going at a pretty good pace. We are in our late 30’s, hike frequently and my husband is a firefighter. We did this hike in July it was around 87 degrees, we started the hike at 5:30am. It took us 1 hour to get to the overlook. Took us about 45 mile round trip to the fatality site and back up. Took us a little over an hour to get back down. We stopped at each of the 19 memorials on the way down.

This hike is in full sun, but since we left early, the walk up was mostly shaded because the sun had not come all the way up. Wear good shoes and bring more water than you think you will need.

Would not recommend children or animals. Parking is limited.

Great hike, just not too sure of the marked distance I measured out 7.3 miles one-way but still worth every step of it, please make sure you have the proper footwear and plenty of water this is not a normal hike, the hardest part is coming back up from the fatality site to the observation point, go early because parking is limited

Bring your good hiking boots and poles for the climb up 1200 feet on a good dirt path with periodic stone steps. Lots of switchbacks past 19 memorial markers for the men killed. Very well done. A few benches, not shaded, as you go up. There’s a bench and partial shade at the top before you descend down the trail to the site. Good spot for lunch. Lots of wildflowers in early May. Limited parking but you can park on the side of the road.

What a truly wonderful memorial site to honor the 19 men who lost their lives trying to stop a wildfire outside Yarnell, AZ. I watched the movie Only the Brave prior to going to the memorial to understand the terrifying conditions those men faced that day that led to their deaths. I will did not hike to the top due to extreme heat, but it is on my bucket list to do in the fall. A site as many as can should attend.
