Super hiking trails, bring lots of water and sunscreen. Lots to see if you enjoy peace and quiet, nature and geology!

Great place to see Sand Hill Cranes flying over the Colorado River
Be sure to visit at dusk to see thousands of Sand Hill Cranes

We have been to the Imperial Wildlife Refuge many times. Each time we go we are treated to another look at wildlife along the Colorado river. The desert turtles are always there to bring us back to the reality of desert life.

Worth the visit. Closed weekends in summer but open everyday in winter. Nice observation deck and indoor center and facilities.

There is not much of the Wildlife Refuge people can actually get to and those bits you can are mostly on foot. The (long) road up to the visitor centre is unmade and very stony - a bit nerve wracking in a rental car! The visitor centre is interesting and the staff are very helpful. They have three desert tortoises (rescues) there and a hummingbird garden. The Painted Desert Trail is very interesting and awesome.

There was so much to see here. We hiked the painted trail and saw donkeys and sheeps. We ate lunch at the nice lake park. The visitors center was helpful and a good video to see.

Don't normally review attractions but this place is amazing. Had visited the Yuma Prison and Quartermaster store on previous visits to Yuma and were looking for something to pass a spare afternoon. Had planned to be at the Yuma Air Show all day but the programme had so little flying and so few aircraft on static display we left early.
We got here about 1:30pm, the lady in the Visitor Centre was exceptionally helpful and told us which view points were worth visiting and which one wasn't. Outside the Centre they had three Hummingbird feeders which you could get close to and take photos. One of my shots captured seven Hummingbirds on one feeder.
Visited Meers Point then up Red Cloud Mine Road to the observation points at Mesquite, Ironwood, and Smoke Tree. Then walked the Painted Desert Trail. The views from the observation points and the scenery on the trail are spectacular
As it was a warm mid-afternoon we had low expectations of seeing any wildlife. Piles of evidence that Mule Deer were around but didn't see one, saw an Osprey and Egret in the distance and loads of Coots (but we get those at home). Probably an early morning visit would provide more sightings.
Back to the Visitor Centre just before it closed at 4pm for a few more Hummingbird photos.
You're on dirt roads of varying quality from a few miles before the centre and for the rest of the visit. We were in a 4x4 so had no problems.

If you're in the area, this is a neat place to stop. We did a hike, about 1.5mi long - perfect in the cooler months! It's pretty remote & nice to see the outdoors in a place that's not loaded with tourists.

This is a hour hike in the desert and is a great way to see the country side. The climb is not hard but good walking shoes are a must. I would recommend this trail for everyone who is a first time visitor.
A very nice area to have lunch with bathrooms available.

What a find! Great place to visit. The people at the visitor center were helpful and friendly. The visitor center is on a dirt road which was well graded and easy to drive. We hiked Painted Desert Trail which is about 3 miles from the visitor center on a road that is not as nicely graded as the road to the visitor center. Nice hike, beautiful day and a great trip!!
