Our first visit to Buckland and we were impressed by the facilities - a nice sized shop, restaurant, plus the art & craft sellers, and we super enjoyed the estate walks (we took the blue trail which was lovely, through the woods, following the river for large parts) but the actual abbey wasn’t every interesting; heavily renovated so bears no resemble to what it once was and it’s clearly been extensively remodelled over the years but we found no where that gave indication to what it looked it before or how it was used. The abbey was very ‘flat’ in comparison to everything else on offer; it really wasn’t the star it should be.

Fabulous place - very child friendly with lots of organised events we particularly loved the Easter Egg hunt - food in the cafe is amazing and I love the shop

The volunteers were so welcoming and knowledgeable with regard to the Abbey. Could do with some more umbrellas over the tables in the courtyard, we visited on a very hot day and there was very little shade.

The Buckland Abbey is a beautiful place to visit and take in the abbeys 800 year history, the grounds and English countryside scenery. There are local historians answering questions, tending the flower gardens, and grounds who are all volunteers sharing the rich history with the curious visitors. The artisan shops are quite lovely and have some one of a kind pieces.
I'll be having somethings shipped to me once I get home.

I’ve been a national trust member for several years now and supported them through the pandemic, but I won’t be renewing my membership. My visit here typifies the reason why. I went with my dog, on my own as I was down in Devon for some training. When I got into the reception I was told that I was not allowed to walk round the outside of the abbey or even the gardens, but could only do the estate walk and even on this my dog had to be on lead at all times. Now I can understand not being allowed in the abbey with the dog, and completely agree that in areas of livestock your dog must be on lead, but this accounted for about 5% of the walk we did. And this seems to be typical at most national trust places (the exception being the wonderful nostell priory). I was told to leave the dog in the car or come back without him! What would have been the harm in allowing people with dogs to walk round the house to at least appreciate the architecture and gardens. They also had NO waste bins anywhere on site. I just feel really disappointed in the national trust and this is a big reason why I won’t renew my membership (also just to walk the boundary and see none of the house was £18 for an adult) so if you’re not a member and have a dog all I can say is don’t go!

Set off in the pouring rain from Honiton, but by the time we arrived at Buckland Abbey the sun was out and everything had warmed up. We parked a few yards from the entrance and started our visit with lunch in the café which was very tasty. The gardens were gorgeous and we played a few games that had been laid out on the lawn for visitors. The great barn was amazing - more church-like than the house, despite its monastic beginnings. We enjoyed our visit to the house where you could clearly see the arches from the original abbey. It was also interesting learning about Francis Drake and subsequent members of the family who lived at Buckland. All in all a great visit.

I am not really sure why they say this place is dog friendly, it's not as in the most Interesting parts of the grounds no dogs are allowed. My husband and I had to visit the Abbey and grounds separately. First point I would make is that visitors should be given a map to find one's way around the estate, its all very well having enthusiastic volunteers showing you a map on the wall but not mentioning the very many places we could not go with our dog. And the very small notices saying no dogs should be human eye level, not dog eye level, sadly my dog has not learnt to read yet. Although I was not expecting to take my dog into the Abbey, I did not expect so much of the grounds to be out of bounds.

Saying that the red route walk was lovely particular beautiful at this time of year with the bluebells in bloom. The Abbey was very interesting but could have better signage to find one's way around. The guides were very good, well informed and knowledgeable.

NT members, if not check web site first or phone site to check entry costs.
We arrived just as it was opening so main building / Abbey was not open yet, note good car park Sat Nav did work but instruction on web site helped ,
All staff we came in contact were pleasant, helpful, informative when asked a question & curtius . We think NT "powers to be" must have re-educated staff to be more polite to those visiting NT sites.
We followed the colour coded walks and spent about 1 hours 20 minutes walking , glad the paths were dry and in good condition , few diversions due to recent storms bring trees down but not much of a problem to sort through the woods etc.
Note the garden by main building is very pretty .
Good layout inside main building well thought out even us golden oldies understood it
Lots of stairs so beware. . We think children would be impressed.

Had a lovely visit with my husband last Wednesday. A beautiful setting with plenty of history to discover. The staff were wonderful especially the buggy drivers as I had mobility issues. Thank you.

I've been here twice in the last six months and had a tour both times. The grounds are beautiful and the house is very interesting, with many features that have been wonderfully restored. I was very disappointed however about the sanitised version of Drake's life portrayed by both the guide and the information boards. Neither mentioned Drake's active role in the slave trade and only described him in largely positive terms throughout. The NT has come under criticism for drawing attention to these issues in the past so I really hope they haven't bowed to pressure from those that only want to portray the positives of Britain's Imperial past.
