Smailholm Tower is impressive at a distance, but even more so close up. There are signposts and you do go past a farm before you reach the car park.
On entering the tower we were greeted by a member of staff. He was very knowledgeable and told us a bit of background information. A spiral stone staircase takes you up to the different levels. I thought the tower would be more of a ruin, but this is not the case. It was great to see the different rooms with massive stone fireplaces and wonderful far reaching views from all the windows.
It was really exposed and windy (no surprise really) when you stood outside the tower, but this only added to the experiece. Loved it!

Estaba ya cerrada pero es una vista muy bonita de esta casa torre en su entorno. El Iago estaba con vegetación y no vimos el agua .

We set out to visit the tower on our way home from a short break to Eyemouth. Once we got on the right road to find the signposts it was easy to find, albeit the track was narrow. We hadn't checked to see if it was open but struck lucky. The approach from the car park isn't very direct and the waymarkers were a little overgrown, but we were close enough to see the tower so no problem. The informative display on the ground floor and mezzanine were excellent, and the guide was pleasant, polite and happy to answer any questions we had.
The spiral stone staircase was daunting but well worth climbing, as the figurines on the other three floors telling the story of Sir Walter Scott and his work with Scottish fables were exquisitely beautiful. The view from the top was breathtaking. We got a real sense of how difficult life was in the area in the past, but it must have been very cosy and secure inside. Would definitely visit again. Not suitable for those with mobility issues as the approach path is rough.

Fantastic view and a great piece of history. Bit dull though, not much to feel like you have walked back in time. It would probably be better to gave the rooms set up to how they looked.
Great spot but its not that amazing.
Also, they don't take card payments here so be warned.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit to Smailholm Tower. We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed exploring the history and taking in the fantastic views.
We believe there are lots of things to see, including the unique and enchanting Minstrelsy exhibition of costumed figurines and tapestries relating to Scott's ballads, interpretation panels, an audio guide and a model of how the tower used to look.
Unfortunately on the day of your visit we were having trouble with our phone lines and were unable to take card payments. This was however a one off and was quickly resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave feedback.

My wife and I were driving back to where we were staying when we noticed Smailholme Tower situated on the hill. I immediately took the turning for the tower, which was signposted. We drove along a narrow road before turning left, again following the signs. After about 1/2 a mile we drove through a farm yard and again followed the sign for the tower. From the farm you drive on a gravel track until you reach the car park for the tower. When we arrived the car park gate was closed, but there was still ample places to park. Smailholme Tower looked amazing from the road. It was a short walk to the tower, you can follow the arrows on the ground, but the arrows are not easy to spot in places. I would say that if you are unsteady on your feet you would need somebody to help you walk to the tower, and if it has been raining then appropriate shoes would be recommended, as the path to the tower is on grass. When you get to to the tower it was like taking a step back in time, the building looked amazing and it had commanding views over the surrounding area. The tower has an interesting history. It could be an ideal place for a picnic. I am so pleased that we decided to visit Smailholme Tower and I would recommend anybody to visit.

Deformed worth the detour. The views are breathtaking and it’s really windy. It’s a shame it wasn’t open but it’s worth it for the view. We heard a bird and it was a rare peregrine falcon.

I made the effort to walk up to tower, and I’m so glad I did.
It’s nothing special, however the views you get are breathtaking.

I don't usually write bad reviews, but felt I needed to in this case for a number of reasons. It was a dark and rainy day when we visited (although I quite liked the effect coupled with the starkness of the tower--the weather was NOT the problem). However, the road to the parking area is simply horrid, and filled with potholes that were DEEP and with the rain almost impassible. From the parking area to the tower is quite a steep walk--not a problem for us, but could be for many, especially when the grass is wet. But most disappointing was the interior. I guess I was expecting more explanation of how former inhabitants lived, what the interior may have been furnished, what went on at the various levels. What we got was a series of dolls (exceptionally made) that illustrated some of Sir Walter Scot's stories. I realize that he stayed here for awhile as a youth, but these dolls belong in a Scot museum, not here. The architecture was interesting, but the views were only so-so for Scotland. This could have been a great attraction if the National Trust would spend some pounds on the roads and on more interpretation of the tower itself.

We stopped here on the way back from Kelsi, the view leading up to it was fantastic. The track to the car park was through a farm and then along a very pot holed, muddy track which wasn't great. At the car park there are two tracks one easier and one steeper, however we found them both easy and not steep. As it was December the tower was closed so we were only able to see the views. I'm sure it's worth it in the summer and the track needs improving to get a better rating.

Only to comment on the Smailholm Tower. I read a couple German and one Dutch reviews of their visit - one noting that the place is 'not spectacular". I am a direct lineal descendant of the man who first built the place. For us, it is the Pringle Tower and was the principle family home for ~200 years, ending at the end of the 16th century. I wanted only to note that this was a private home, designed not to entertain visitors from the continent but to protect loved ones from a rough and dangerous environment. It served as protector to my blood and now deserves - in decent respect to its service - some greater appreciation of its purpose than these reports faintly suggest. Read a little about The Reivers of the time and you will come to a greater appreciation of why the Pringle/Smailhom Tower doesn't resemble Neueschwannstein or even Schoss Fuschl am Fuschl See.
Es tut mir sehr leid dass mein Deusch ist so schwach and ich habe schwierigkeiten Woerten richtig zu buchstabieren.

Brief response to the two gentlemen (one from North Yorkshire and one from Blaydon).......
Sorry if I have misused this instrument. I had thought my views were solicited. If I have violated 'policy', I am sorry and apologize. It was unintentional.
I WOULD drop by more frequently if I could. Quite a number of personal circumstances make that difficult, among them the first 5000 miles. In the old days, we lived in Buckinghamshire and regularly hiked in the Cairngorms, making Smailholm wonderfully convenient.
I did NOT know about the 4.5 quid admission. But I loved that place so very very much, it would have made no difference whatsoever. In res gustibus, non disputandem est. I note however that my tastes and expectations are not necessarily the norm.
In any event, let's keep the record clear. I am not 'let down' by Smailholm. It is YOU who apparently feel that way. I am the world's leading expert on "what I feel". You are highly disadvantaged in contending with me on that subject. I LOVED the place and am grateful to Visit Scotland for preserving it.
Remember, too, though I speak pure "Yank", I am a Scot.I love to sit alone, far from the crowd, cold and wet from the rain.
