In a striking location, sitting on top of a hill, which you can see for some distance. It's a short walk from the car park, up a slope to the entrance. Once inside there's a small information and display area above the welcome desk, then it's 3 floors up to the roof, where on a good day you can get fabulous views. The rooms are home to a collection of Walter Scott models, from his childhood and stories. Low ceilings, and a rope to help climb the steps.

we decided to visit this after spotting it in the 'far' distance
and glad we did, its very desolate, and you do have to drive through a working farm to get here
The views are amazing, you can also go out on to a small bit of roof on both sides of tower
Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but we did still enjoy ourselves

Discovered by chance on the road map, we turned off our route for a short visit to the tower. The environment and also the tower we liked very much. The weather was nice and so we could enjoy the view from the balconies. The tower is well preserved, there is a small exhibition. Sir Walter Scott is a big issue. Would recommend it in fine weather.

Clearly advertised as open, on the Historic Scotland website, and in the panel at the car park (a July Sunday 2.15 pm). But firmly locked, with no explanation. There are so few Historic Scotland structures open that this was doubly disappointing. We are up to see the Borders, and, for the fifth year running, most Historic Scotland things are closed, including the interiors of Jedburgh, Melrose and Kelso Abbeys. But at least the website makes that clear. In Smailholm's case, it was a disgrace. We've travelled a long way to see these things, plan meticulously, and care greatly about these beautiful places. What a pity there seems to be so little regard or interest from some of the people running them. Meanwhile I met an exasperated couple there who have long been members of Historic Scotland but were wondering really what the point was.

Hello, thanks for your review and sorry you found the site closed when you arrived.
The site unfortunately had to close at short notice due to staff illness. Pre-booked ticketholders were contacted, but our usual closure process was not followed through on this occasion to inform visitors on our website and social media, and we are very sorry for this oversight. We do recommend booking all visits in advance so that we can email you when sites do have to close at short notice, but we are sorry that on this occasion we did not inform walk-up visitors. Please be assured that our staff are aware of this and our closure process is being closely monitored/reviewed.
If you would like to raise this as a formal complaint, please email us at Complaints@hes.scot and we’ll be happy to take this forward for you. You can find more information about our Complaints Procedure on our website.

It is in an isolated place and when we arrived they were closing, so we only saw it from the outside. The manager closed the parking lot and asked us to remove the cars because they locked the premises. However, he told us that we could go up to see the tower up close.
It was worth it ercarae because it is very pretty.

One of the premier examples of a Border Reiver Tower House. Associated with Sir Walter Scott so a good place to gain an appreciation of the Border Ballads. Tremendous views from the parapet; be sure to check those out. One of the rare towers where the outer barmkin walls are still largely in place. Small gift shop but no bathroom facilities.

Smailholm Tower is impressive at a distance, but even more so close up. There are signposts and you do go past a farm before you reach the car park.
On entering the tower we were greeted by a member of staff. He was very knowledgeable and told us a bit of background information. A spiral stone staircase takes you up to the different levels. I thought the tower would be more of a ruin, but this is not the case. It was great to see the different rooms with massive stone fireplaces and wonderful far reaching views from all the windows.
It was really exposed and windy (no surprise really) when you stood outside the tower, but this only added to the experiece. Loved it!

We set out to visit the tower on our way home from a short break to Eyemouth. Once we got on the right road to find the signposts it was easy to find, albeit the track was narrow. We hadn't checked to see if it was open but struck lucky. The approach from the car park isn't very direct and the waymarkers were a little overgrown, but we were close enough to see the tower so no problem. The informative display on the ground floor and mezzanine were excellent, and the guide was pleasant, polite and happy to answer any questions we had.
The spiral stone staircase was daunting but well worth climbing, as the figurines on the other three floors telling the story of Sir Walter Scott and his work with Scottish fables were exquisitely beautiful. The view from the top was breathtaking. We got a real sense of how difficult life was in the area in the past, but it must have been very cosy and secure inside. Would definitely visit again. Not suitable for those with mobility issues as the approach path is rough.

Only to comment on the Smailholm Tower. I read a couple German and one Dutch reviews of their visit - one noting that the place is 'not spectacular". I am a direct lineal descendant of the man who first built the place. For us, it is the Pringle Tower and was the principle family home for ~200 years, ending at the end of the 16th century. I wanted only to note that this was a private home, designed not to entertain visitors from the continent but to protect loved ones from a rough and dangerous environment. It served as protector to my blood and now deserves - in decent respect to its service - some greater appreciation of its purpose than these reports faintly suggest. Read a little about The Reivers of the time and you will come to a greater appreciation of why the Pringle/Smailhom Tower doesn't resemble Neueschwannstein or even Schoss Fuschl am Fuschl See.
Es tut mir sehr leid dass mein Deusch ist so schwach and ich habe schwierigkeiten Woerten richtig zu buchstabieren.

Brief response to the two gentlemen (one from North Yorkshire and one from Blaydon).......
Sorry if I have misused this instrument. I had thought my views were solicited. If I have violated 'policy', I am sorry and apologize. It was unintentional.
I WOULD drop by more frequently if I could. Quite a number of personal circumstances make that difficult, among them the first 5000 miles. In the old days, we lived in Buckinghamshire and regularly hiked in the Cairngorms, making Smailholm wonderfully convenient.
I did NOT know about the 4.5 quid admission. But I loved that place so very very much, it would have made no difference whatsoever. In res gustibus, non disputandem est. I note however that my tastes and expectations are not necessarily the norm.
In any event, let's keep the record clear. I am not 'let down' by Smailholm. It is YOU who apparently feel that way. I am the world's leading expert on "what I feel". You are highly disadvantaged in contending with me on that subject. I LOVED the place and am grateful to Visit Scotland for preserving it.
Remember, too, though I speak pure "Yank", I am a Scot.I love to sit alone, far from the crowd, cold and wet from the rain.
