What a beautiful experience of seeing Old Mexico in its rare and natural state. 3 hours from PV, its worth renting a car and going for a drive.

My daughters and I were on our annual pilgrimage to Mexico. They had never been to the beach in Mexico, so I took them to Puerto Vallarta. One of my wife and my favorite trips included spending several days in the mountains east of Puerto Valllarta and so I insisted the girls go with me. We stopped several places on the trip (one of the advantages of a rental car is you can do things at your own pace). We went to San Sebastian and Mascota on the way.
First, let me tell you, the road is treacherous. It is two lane with no shoulder and there are often deep drop-off and sometimes no guard rails. The trip home was exacerbated by heavy rain after dark. There are times there is livestock in the roads and even a sign at one point warning of falling cows as well as large trucks with heavy loads struggling with the grades. But care and reasonable speed mitigate these.
Talpa is several kilometers off the main road, but worth the trip. We got a late start, and so some of the local shops were already closed when we arrived. I was disappointed, because there is a coffee store that roast fresh coffee and I missed its wonderful aroma and buying whole bean coffee fresh off the roaster. But the Zocala was alive with activity. Venders were selling all sorts of things from food to toys with lights in them. Families were enjoying the evening together (one of the things I like most about Mexico) and instead of the often oppressive heat and humidity along the coast, temperatures were in the low 70's under a cloudy sky.
As is often the case in Mexico, the Basilica is the center of the community located on the Zocalo. It is not only beautiful and impressive, it is a major attractions of the community as is known as Virgen del Rosario de Talpa. Historically it is the site of a miracle involving an old statue of the Virgin and later healings done by the statue. There are several pilgrimages each year to the basilica with people walking three days from Puerto Vallarta toTalpa to visit the church.
It is a beautiful and ornate structure on the inside. There are neon lighted crosses on each side of the entrance. There is a store located on the side of the basilica that sells religious objects. We visited several "magical cities" in the area. We all agreed this one held the most magic for us.

While this is the main attraction in Talpa there are a few other things to see. I suggest taking a guid tour of the town. The Basilica is impressive and the effort to build it must have been monumental. It is not favorable to the church when you consider the cost to the local population. Yet you can appreciate the beauty of the side and out. The locals do an excellent job of upkeep which does attract tourists. Religion is still important in all of Mexico. We were on the road Saturday before Palm Sunday and the road was filled with thousands of pilgrims walking to Talpa. Is was an awesome sight.

This is a beautiful church inside and out. It’s right in the square so lots of activity and people watching. Lots of vendors and shops. There is also a smaller church near by that has more religious meaning to the locals.
