Amazing experience thanks to excellent tour guide Miriam. 11m high dry stone walls are astonishing. I am proud of the skills and societal management of our African ancestors. They seems to have been more organised and humane than the Vikings of the same period.

Great experience, love the history, could help if they could put written history examples on each site for people to read and learn instead of just relying on tour guides.

A truly great historical site, and you should see it for yourself. Though it is not easy to get to.
Numerically most of the visitors are school groups - who are very excited at the experience
As others have said, you need to use a guide here to get the most out of the experience
There are three bits to the site -
-the hilltop fort which you should make the effort to climb up to - it is quite a steep climb - but the views over the complex are outstanding. There is little in the way of much stones left standing
- the museum, which we did not see as it was blacked out because of no electricity
- the Great Enclosure which has the surviving walls, which are indeed massive, and you need to see them yourself to appreciate their scale and intricate construction
I gave it 4 out of five stars, as a lot of what you go for is the abstract "history" not what you actually see on the ground. But it is well worth a visit

Very interesting site giving a view into the cultural origins of the country. Entrance is about 25usd each and the option guide is worth the few dollars more as they can explain a lot of the history and context

Trata-se de um monumento interessante (sobretudo se você visitar durante o por do sol, quando a vista é ainda mais linda). Convenientemente localizado entre Harare e a África do Sul, para aqueles fazendo esse percurso.

It is a long time since I previously visited and it is just as good as I remember. Whether you have an interest in history or not, it is a spectacular place to go to. It is also remarkably good value (for a local anyway) at $5 or $7 with a guide which I would certainly recommend. I went round with Gift who was very friendly and informative.
For those who do not know the lie of the land, I must say that there is quite a lot of walking to be done, quite a lot of it uneven ground, and one of the major parts of the monument is at the top of a steep hill though one ascent is more gentle than the other. The African village may be seen by some as something of a gimmick but we need to remember that when GZ was inhabited the whole valley was covered in huts so I believe it is a valuable part of the visit. Arguably more could be done to build up this part of the attraction.
The guided tour was about 2 hours. I suspect we rushed the last bit a little because I had lots of questions and it is possible that you will want to do some wandering on your own once the tour is over. A power outage meant the museum was in the dark but they provided torches to look at the exhibits. They were not great torches but I appreciated the thought (as it is not their fault there are often power cuts).
I did not look at the tea room so I cannot comment on it!
Incidentally GZ can be visited in a day trip from both Bulawayo and Harare.

To better immerse in the history of old Zimbabwe visit this site. The Shona culture is well characterized across this immense and impressive set of ruins. Most fascinating is the physical marriage of manmade structure to natural surroundings. In places it is as compelling as many other world-famous ruins. We were assigned Gift as guide at the entrance (yes, Gift :)) and he added much to the story which also comprises Khami to the east. Thanks again to Bonisa Excursions and Lesley as multi-day guide and driver. +263 77 755 1142

Absolutely beautiful - ensure you hire a guide to explain it to you as otherwise you'll be wasting your time and miss out on 75% of what's there to actually see. Don't be cheap, you'll regret it.
Re the time - we ended up spending three hours there as the guide was so informative about the history of the place (ask for Mariam)!
Almost no tourists were there aside from local school groups, etc...

Am I right in understanding that the ruins are closed on Sundays? Will they be open on Easter Monday or are they also closed public holidays? Many thanks!

The influence of Great Zimbabwe on smaller town is a boost in hotel and other accommodation providing businesses from tourists who flock to see Great Zimbabwe monuments. It has also led to local people in small town to engage in tour guiding activities, cultural and traditional performances and crafts that entertains the tourists thereby earning a living from payments for such services.

I was just wondering how long we would need to set aside for a visit to the ruins? If we arrive at 12-1pm on Friday, is this enough time?
Skrevet 12. februar 2016
A very rushed visit to the ruin would require at least 3 hours. But I suggest that you do not rush it because there is quite a bit to be seen--the ruins, queen's village, cultural village and a small museum with artifacts collected from the site.
Skrevet 15. februar 2016
Hello! Is the site open over the weekend? I am hoping to visit either on Saturday afternoon or Snday morning. Thanks!
Skrevet 23. januar 2016
Yes it is. From my personal experience I would advise you to give yourself ample time to fully tour the site, take some photos etc. Its quite vast.
Skrevet 26. januar 2016
How high is the climb from the bottom of the ruins to the very top?
Skrevet 6. november 2015
Hi if you mean to climb the hill complex its about 6 to 700 meters approximately.
Skrevet 6. november 2015
