Ron Coleman Quartz Mining was very disappointing. The four of us found only one tiny (about 1 inch) crystal with an unbroken point. There is plenty of broken quartz (probably smashed by bull dozers).
The few new dirt piles were covered with too many people (there's no controls of the crowd sizes). For example, Wegner Crystal Mining controls how many people they allow at the site at any given time.

It was very fun. Tools are available to purchase (cheaper than expected) we also brought our own shovels. In and out privileges in case you want to go eat and come back. Keep anything you find, and there was some neat stuff. Very fun. Nice informative staff.

We did the public dig at the Coleman Miller Mountain Mine. They sent us to a tailings pile at the end of a dirt road. The tailings were old and it was very obvious they had just turned a small section over with an excavator. We found just a few very small decent singles but no clusters after 4 hours of solid digging. We had much better luck at other mines.

The tour guide was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Awesome place to visit to zip line, dig for quarts crystals, and tour an active quarts mine. A bumpy ride with an awesome view but worth the money.

It was a nice outing. For a few of us, it was our first time mining others have had the experience. The staff is fairly friendly. It was a hot day, but they have staff on a cart that drives around selling water and snacks. Ziplining is offered but we declined. The scenery is pretty.
The gift shop has pretty wares. The shaved ice trailer is a nice way to cool off.

My wife and I had an extra day from vacationing Hot Springs to spare, so we decided to go do a little digging.
As 1st timers, we didn't know what to expect as we drove out to Jessieville. How Sketchy would this be? would anybody be there except Bubba?
But to our surprise, the backwoods storefront is expansive, clean and inviting and there were 30-40 people there. As for the digging, I would encourage any1st timers to go. They give you a bag to put your stuff in and you can unload in your car and make as many trips as you like.
Now we were lucky to find a large 5.5 lb quartz ($200B-300 we think) but even if we didn't, we found 50-60 other pieces that we are fond of as well. Maybe not worth much, but some keepsakes for our $25 a piece investment. Good luck y'all!

Five of us (three adults and two children) went to Ron Coleman Mining on April 8, 2023, for the mining and tour package. It was a memorable experience.
Frankly, for me, the prospect of digging through mounds of dirt for shiny rocks represents some Dantesque circle of hell. Fortunately, I was the only stick in the mud in our family group. Everyone else, especially including my two granddaughters (ages 6 and 3), seemed to have a grand time. Their enjoyment, along with my vantage point from a comfy camp chair, made this a very positive experience for everyone. We certainly would consider returning someday for even more digging.
Two of us also took a $30 plunge off a rocky cliff and zip lined over the mine. This was the first zip line experience for both of us, and it provided several seconds of adrenaline rush that we agreed would be worth repeating. Doggone it, I wish we didn't rotate and wind up traveling backwards. I would have preferred seeing where I was going. I might also note that the "automatic braking system" did not engender a gentle end to our excursion. Rather, our jolting stop was surprisingly abrupt. But two generations of our family survived to zip again someday.

Hi My husband and I are coming from Burleson Texas the week of June 5th.

Sorry. I've been once, and I have no clue when they turn up fresh dirt.
We came from Texas and are here have visited sevreal mines. With the Annual Dig contest, Is your site one that is sponsering this dig and are you allowing people to come and dig without competing. We have two more days here and didn't want to be involved in the contest. I have an elderly parent with me and was hoping to hit one or two more mines before we head back.

There is no competition here. Come dig for crystals!
Do you ever buy raw gems? I will be there the beginning of October, and do a bit of garnet mining in NC. I also have an amethyst half tower.

Thank you for your question. At this time, we do not buy raw stones outside our regular sources.

When we were there I believe they said they dumped fresh mined loads everyday. However one day we dug the mining machinery had broke down and they did not dump any new loads, but we still came away with some good crystals

My husband and I went to Ron Colemans Crystal Mine 20 years ago and there was crystals every place. We filled 2 5gal buckets and still had to carry some clusters. After reading the reviews I am concerned about what it is like now. We are planning on going back Sept. 22nd with some friends. They were bringing up new piles dumping them several times a day when we were there. It sounds like the crystals are not plentiful like they were 20 years ago. Some reviews said they dug for hours and didn't find anything. And some reviews said they didn't bring up new piles to dig thru and some said the piles were 4 days old. I would really like to know the truth before we drive from Indiana to Ark. to dig crystals at Ron Colemans.

Hello, we do try to bring up fresh dirt at LEAST every other week day (usually Mon, Wed, Friday), however sometimes we are unable to, whether it be from weather, equipment malfunctions, a plentiful crystal pocket that keeps us busy, etc. As we tell many people, it's a lot like fishing. Some days you go home with buckets, some days you aren't as lucky. I can garuntee we are an active mine, and we do garuntee the digging fees.
All that being said, sometimes we are able to bring fresh dirt everyday of the week.
I know this isn't necessarily the answer you may have been hoping for, but we want to be honest with all our customers.

My family has gone to Hot Springs every year for crystal hunting, but have always gone to the Jim Coleman mines. We were thinking of spending one day at the Ron Coleman mines. We usually drive directly to the site so we can start early. How early can we start and what are the best directions to get directly to the site?
