An adventurous 4WD to get to the volcano (similar to Cape York, Australia in terms of river crossings and difficulty). We slid through S-bend mud trails to get there and much more. You see the roads and think there's no way you'll make it there (or back!) but the drivers are the best imaginable. Full confidence and respect to the drivers.

At check in, you can drive up most of the volcano and just walk the last 100m. It is steep but you can rest, take time if needed. I wouldn't be put off by the walk. And it's well worth it anyway.

You stand right on the edge of the rim. Apparently in wet weather, you are more likely to see the glow of lava, but in dry weather it's obviously clear. I went during the day and saw lava bombs go above head level (not near me). Apparently twilight is best cos there is more lava colour contrasts. But if the weather is iffy, just get there when you can or risk the roads being flooded.

Mt Yasmur / Whitegrass Resort

We were in Vanuatu for a week (16th – 23rd January 2024). When we were supposed to fly to Tanna our flight was cancelled and rescheduled to 6:30am the next day – definitely be prepared for flight cancellations (at least at the moment. We met a woman who was trying to go to Santo and her flight was cancelled two days in a row). Loved the flight – got on a tiny 16 seater and my partner, Tom, and I were basically sitting in the cockpit, as we were in the front row. Absolutely awesome!

Tanna is a decent sized island, but super remote. We went because I was so excited to see Mt Yasur (the volcano). We stayed at Whitegrass Resort. Beautiful resort – the landscaping is amazing and well kempt. It’s expensive, but there’s not a lot more on the island in regards to walking to a restaurant – so glad we spent a little but more for the comfort and convenience. The rooms were nice (basic, but spacious) – not super private; we had a few people look in through the slats as we opted for the ocean view room and it’s on the pathway to the lobby. The ocean view rooms are not right on the seaside as well, so keep that in mind when booking. I’d say we were about 200m from the water and trees/plants in the view line, so not really worth getting the ocean view room.

The food was really nice and the service was great. Everyone at Whitegrass was so lovely and polite. The pool was surprisingly small, though. There’s not a ‘beach’ (Aussie standards), so I thought the pool would be a highlight. However, it’s very small and only has two sunbaking chairs. The rim of the pool also has rock features, so you can’t enjoy the view. Again, for the remoteness of the island, it’s definitely a stunning resort overall.

We booked the night volcano tour (part of why I booked the accommodation through Whitegrass). We were able to book that morning through the resort, when we arrived. Everything was seamless and stress-free.

The volcano tour was very lengthy – would not recommend if you have younger children or a short attention span, like me, haha. It starts at 2:30pm and you jump in a 4WD for a two hour drive to the volcano. There are stops along the way for photos. Then you sign a waiver, wait around to hear the safety briefing, then head back into the 4WD for the drive up to the volcano. The road is hectic (unsealed for a majority of the whole drive) and fun. The walk up the volcano is only about 10 minutes. There’s a tiny bathroom (didn’t see it up close) and nothing else (I mean, it is a volcano). We stayed there from about 4pm – about 8pm. A reallllly long time. That being said, the experience is unreal. Plumes of lava bursting into the sky and the rumble of movement under the surface was deafening and incredible. But – it’s a long day. I wish we brought a snack or more water. There’s no where to sit up there, so be wary if you have knee or leg concerns.

The view at night is legendary. It was all worth seeing the fiery ring of red emanating from the pit of the volcano. It was one of the best experiences of my life. We had great weather and such clear conditions to see so many eruptions.

After dark, around 8pm, you walk back down the stairs to the volcano and back to the cars. We were not instructed that you should NOT – seriously, do NOT – sit on the seating in the back of the 4WD ute tray on the way home. After leaving the ash fields we encountered a man who stood in the middle of the road, trying to stop us. The driver managed to get around him. However, my heart sunk when I saw two men doing the same thing a 100m down the road with their car fake bogged on the road. I honestly though we were going to die or something horrible was going happen. They seemed crazy messed up on island ice or something and somehow didn’t notice us in the tray. After they started screaming at the car, our driver finally found a chance to speed off, we were horrified. The island is super dangerous after dark away from the resort. Everyone, including 5 year olds have machetes. It’s been a while since we’ve been overseas for travel and this was such a reminder to be more vigilant.

Anyway, Tanna was beautiful. The volcano was incredible at night. However, the experience was so scary that we’ve opted for domestic travel in the near future now. I’m sure other people have different experiences; however, I read so much in the build up to this trip and didn’t see anything much post-COVID, so I wanted to post this updated review. Hope it helps future travellers. Ash boarding was something I wanted to do, but was not on offer. Not sure if it’s a post-COVID thing. Long day trip, just be prepared!

We were on Tanna with Airtaxi Vanuatu. Very well organized trip. Easy to book via the website. An unforgettable experience, starting from the flight and ending with over an hour of observation of the volcano erupting every now and then. There are not many places in the world where you can do this. All professional staff, especially the patient lady in the office who tried to understand my English and meet my expectations. The trip is worth the price, the experiences are priceless.

Fantastic. We were mesmerised by the whole experience. After about two hours of jolting four wheel drive arrived at a small unimpressive museum from where our car took us to the mountain base. If you suffer from back problems I think the ride would be quite unpleasant and maybe not suitable. A steep but manageable walk up to a viewing point was a little challenging for this senior but a minute's stop halfway helped. Huge billowing clouds of smoke are belching from the top of the volcano right in front of us only metres away. We were allowed to stand about 2-3 metres from the very edge of the volcano with no fences of any barriers in front. The lava slapping against the inner walls can be clearly heard and the rumbling underfoot make this totally immersive. After a while we were guided up a long, incline which was a more friendly gradient and easily managed. More of the same huge clouds emanating from the volcano which continues to fascinate. As darkness falls the mood changed and people became quiet until suddenly the rumble under our feet became more urgent and multiple red, glowing lava bombs were expelled high into the air directly in front of us. This brought gasps and exclamations of wonder from everyone. Then people remained silent until the next eruption. This was what we came for and we were not disappointed. After about 15 minutes, unfortunately time was up and we reluctantly returned for the return journey. The driver was amazing driving across areas with no tracks and avoiding the many obstacles. A few things to consider: The very rough journey; Don't wear white sneakers like us as you are walking across volcanic dust; Take a jacket as it gets quite cold at the top; take water to drink. This was a bucket list item and not to be missed.

Wonderful people, extraordinary scenery and a potentially lethal experience with an erupting volcano. The air taxi was beautifully piloted from Port Vila, followed by an hour and a half ride in the back of a pick-up, a nice sandwich and then up to the crater. The final climb is short but steep. Bring a mask, eye protection and water. A larger eruption covered us in gases and ash. The guides were calm and top notch. Make sure your life and travel insurance are paid up!

A visit to Vanuatu (particularly Tanna) cannot be considered complete without coming here. Whether you hike up from the parks entrance or are driven up to just below the summit the experience is like no other. This wasn't my first volcano visit but it was certainly the most incredible and with so much actvity it's certainly made memories that will stay with me forever. Standing on the craters edge at sunset looking down at the caldera which every few minutes entertained us with spectacular gutteral rumbles, pyro shows like nothing you've seen before along with the occaisional dusting of ash and you really get to appreciate the sheer power of this primeval setting. The place is safe and the staff who walk you to the crater, after a compulsory safety briefing, ensure your safety and their knowledge about the volcano as well as local customs surrounding it are amazing. Anyway don't take my word for it but get yourself there and have one of the greatest experiences you'll ever have. We booked through our hotel, White Grass Resort, as part of a wider days excursion and their drivers and guides were super helpful and knowlegable about all things Tanna as well as Yasur.

Just wow! We thoroughly recommend a visit to Mt Yasur!
Pitch black dark, standing on the rim of the caldera watching lava shoot into the air and rain down looking like fireworks, seeing the red glow reflected up onto the steam clouds, hearing the rumble and roar of the rift in the earth - just incredible!

We went on the Whitegrass Resort tour, guided by Phil and Bryan - both excellent guides. After an international flight cancelation by Air Vanuatu that threatened to put our whole Tanna visit in jeopardy, we worked with David from the Whitegrass Resort and Antony from Unity Airlines to charter a flight and save the whole reason for the trip to Vanuatu - this volcano. Whitegrass pulled out all the stops to make sure that we made it to Mt Yasur and had an incredible night time experience of the volcano, despite the 2 day interruption to our trip caused by Air Vanuatu. As soon as we arrived, we were whisked onto a 4WD and away to Mt Yasur, racing against the sunset. The experience of the volcano itself was made all the more special by the fact that all other tourists had departed by the time we arrived, a private tour with just us, our charter flight pilot and his wife. We feel very privileged to have had this wonderful experience - thank you Whitegrass and Unity for making this possible.

Beautiful palce and vulcanos, you can get here with the trip from the city or from your hotel. You have to pay 8000 vatu for entrance to vulcano, wait for guide and everybody around 17.30 go together to the range. You stay there to 19 and after everybody goes down with guide again. Nice experience during a sunset.
