While in Kumasi, I visited the Manhyia Palace Museum. The tour started with a short video on the history of the Asantes (yes this is the correct spelling). I learned about the rise of the Asante kingdom, the Asantehene, the Queen Mother and the resilience of the Asante warriors. This really set the pace for the rest of the tour which was quite informative and educational.
Our tour guide led us through room after room and explained the significance (and importance) of each artifact such as original furniture, thrones, wax figures, gold ornaments and even a working refrigerator from 1974! However, please note that pictures and recordings are not allowed.
Overall I left with a feeling of cultural awareness and empowerment; but most importantly, a connection to and an appreciation of these majestic people which I descended from.
Tip - Schedule your visit for the same day of the Akwasidae Festival which is an experience in itself!

The Manhyia Palace Museum is located in Kamsi, Ghana. The grounds of the museum and Palace were beautiful. On the grounds were several peacocks, art on the walls, a Peace Bell and a very large Indian Rubber tree. As we entered the museum there was an area where you saw a video on the the history and culture of the Ashante Kingdom.
What stuck with me the most was that the royal succession, in Ghana, is matrilineal. Which means that the family line is traced through the mother.
The colors of the Ashante tribe are gold, black, and green. My aha moment came when I realized the the colors of Jamaica are the same, and Jamaicans can trace their lineage to Ghana from the transatlantic slave trade.
The museum has a gift shop. The only problem was that you cannot take pictures in the museum only outside on the grounds. Good day!

Was more of group to friends trip. I love their gifts shop and the pricing is moderate. You get to learn a lot about the Ashanti history and not through a white man’s lens but from the people themselves which gives it a different perspective if you have studied Ashanti history in school. I would say it is a must for all who visit Kumasi to pass through.

I wouldn't go to Kumasi just for the palace. The entrance fee is 100 cedis. The tour lasts about 30 minutes. I didn't see an introductory video. You're not allowed to take photos.
It was interesting to learn something about Ashanti history, but the tour was too short for me - the guide explained everything in a rush. Even outside you have to be careful how far you go into the grounds. There is also a souvenir shop with reasonable prices (card payment possible).

Very interesting to get an insight into the Ashanti culture. The tour by a museum employee was well done and informative. Unfortunately, photography is absolutely prohibited.

It's a brief but very informative tour of the palace which was built by the British after they had burnt his other one down and sent the king into exile. It's a sad story of the brutality used on the people in order to subdue them, but it's also a glimpse into the organisation and community-mindedness of this ancient kingdom. Well worth a visit.

Unfortunately the museum was closed. The old building is being torn down and a new building in its place. Did get to see the palace from the outside and the grounds. Spectacular Indian Rubber tree. Festival of kings every 42 days, but not the day I was there. Should be really good when the museum reopens. 2023?

I think the hours are like 9-5 but when we went, they were opening later than advertised because they said that people weren't usually coming that early. So, we had to wait for someone to come to give us a tour.
