We took the boat from Boa beach, which was a matatu and boda ride from Kisumu. The island itself is peaceful and occupied by zebra, water buck and antelope, that along with other flaura and fauna were placed there by the government. After getting off the boat, the guide leads you in a short walk around the island, and you can take in the views and get an impression of the lakes geography. Well worth the trip from Kisumu!

Ndere means ‘Meeting Place’ in the dialect of the local Luo tribe. According to Luo folklore, Mikayi - the mother of the tribe, rested up near Ndere after her long journey South Down the Nile Valley. She found thelush shoreline so pleasing that she and her people stayed. Ndere Island is home to a variety of birds including Fish Eagles and a dense population of Swifts. Hippos and Crocodiles, including the lesser known Spotted Crocodiles, are a familiar sight. Impalas have been introduced to the woodland which fringes the shores. Attractions include hiking, walking.

The park is an amazing spot to get away from the city. There cell service is minimal giving you time to stop looking down at your phone and look an the beauty of the Island.
The sunsets are spectacular over a cup of tea and the sunrise is breath taking.
Be sure to pack warm clothes for the night and light clothes for the day while site seeing.

My friend and I decided to check out Ndere Island on a Sunday morning. Chartering a private boat from Kisumu was too pricey (~USD $200), so we hired a driver to bring us to a nearby village from which boats go over to the island. (The drive from Kisumu was about an hour.) The road down to the village was a little treacherous, but we made it. There’s a small office where we got our tickets (USD $23 for foreigners), but they only accept payments through M-PESA (a mobile money transfer service). Luckily, my friend has an account, though I’m sure you could find someone to make the payment for you if you’re willing to give them a little extra. M-PESA’s widely used here. You have to hire a private boat to take you over to the island (~20 minute ride each way). It was USD $35 for the boat. We landed at Director’s Jetty (see map) and the boat driver walked us up about half a mile to the lookout point. Along the way, we saw zebras, water buck, monkeys, and many swifts and hawks. The scenery was quite beautiful. From the lookout, you have a 360 view of Lake Victoria and surrounding land. The island itself has no human inhabitants, though apparently some tourists occasionally camp overnight on it. (We did see a fire pit and there are a couple of latrines.) Our boat driver went back to the boat while we walked about a mile to the Kingfisherman Jetty where he met us to take us back to the village. Overall, it’s a nice outing if you’re looking to get away from Kisumu. Going in the early morning is probably better as the sun gets quite hot by mid-day. Sunglasses & a hat are recommended.

My photographic to Ndere Island national Park is a journey I will never forget. We arrived in Ndere Island that sunny day. It was hot and the breeze coming from the lake when we arrived was welcoming. We found a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) official who briefed us upon arrival on how we could successfully tour the park. We went to the office and paid park entry fees and were permitted to begin our trip. The KWS official connected us to a local guide with a motor boat who took us through to the Island. We saw monkeys and several species of birds. We went around the Island with our guide and also walked through the park a bit. We spent 3 hours taking photos in and around the Island. We found fishermen fishing around the Island and we bought fish while in the lake.

My journey to Ndere Island was great and I will be back soon with a bigger team

As you leave behind the lakeside city in the sun it's now the time to shake off the dust as you set to cross to the island on a five minute motorized canoe. Welcome to Ndere Island national park where nature blends in harmony with the tranquil beauty of the island.

The lush riverine forest is an epicenter of birds and butterflies and while here the commanding call of the African Fish Eagle is worth your attention. The magnificent views will sweep away your expectations as you can even see Kampala , Uganda when the weather allows this.

A nuture stoll with the Burchell's Zebras and Impalas wouldn't be a bad bet and so is the chat withn the fisherfolk communities as you return back to the main land.

Hiking this island is interesting but very hot so one must carry his or her own water bottles in order to survive this activity. And the park has a beautiful view when at the top while seeing various animals running and other having a rest. It was really great memories at the island
