Let me start by providing some practical information as we found it tricky to get any real details before we arrived in Rwanda. You start at the Volcanos national park at 7am for sign in, free hot drink on arrival and there is a great atmosphere as everyone gathers for their respective hikes or gorilla trips. Once there you need to self drive (or your driver) about 30 mins to the trail start in a beautiful rural town on the volcano side. The last 15 minutes are real off road, walking pace speed crawling over boulders and rocks, a 4x4 is absolutely mandatory ( our Landcruiser was perfectly capable). The hike starts in farm land and rises quickly and steeply to the park entrance. Once inside a gate you will collect your military escort and begin the amazing walk inside the ethereal misty forest. Expect another steep section that flattens out to deep mud and bog in wet season, be careful not to lose your shoes. Once at the top the camp itself is relatively unassuming (non existent really) but its poignant and interesting to see. We did not see gorilla but we did get stopped by large mountain buffalo and our soldier escort stepped in to move them on (very dangerous animals). Overall a fab experience, would not recommend if totally unfit or inexperienced in hiking, the altitude is significant (3500m) and at points it is constant climbing. That said, as an averagely fit 30 something it was not so hard and the 70+Yr old hiker in our group managed just fine! A great way to experience the national park

There were only 4 of us the day of our hike, accompanied by an amazing National Park guide (Julie), helpful porter (John), and armed ranger. My husband and I found the experience challenging, due to the elevation (over 9000 ft / 3000 m), steep incline, and muddy conditions (and this was the dry season). To have any chance of completing: you need to be reasonably fit and dressed appropriately with sturdy shoes, long pants, and preferably a long-sleeve shirt. We also had brought gardening gloves that came in handy. Don’t wear new clothes or white sneakers! You will be dirty after this hike; I am still amazed that the hotel got our shoes clean (tip well deserved)! Despite our huffing, puffing and muddy clothes, the experience was more than worth it. There was something sublime about being in the very place where Dian Fossey lived and worked for 18 years. All that remains are signs, many in disrepair, identifying where cabins/tents once stood. Dian is buried next to Digit and some of her other beloved gorillas. The abandoned Karisoke camp area, surrounded by moss-covered trees and jungle vegetation, is serene and peaceful. Quite a contrast to the brutal death Dian suffered here in 1985. A visit to Karisoke is a step back in time! Make sure you stop at the newly opened Ellen DeGeneres Campus. There is a replica of Dian’s cabin as well as informative exhibits on the life of this extraordinary primatologist and conservationist.

A very nice hike to discover the story of Dian Fossey. The trail is muddy but not very difficult. Our guide (provided with the permit at the park) was really interesting. We were lucky and we saw a gorilla from far away.

If you go on this hike only go during the dry season when it hasn't rained for several weeks. Otherwise it will be very very muddy making it much more difficult. You will be going up to 3000 meters so be prepared. Getting to the beginning of the hike is a 30 minute drive on dirt roads - african massage as they call it. Awe-inspiring when you get to the top and see the gravesites but be prepared with plenty of water. We did get to see gorialls on the way down which was an added bonus

I visited Dian Fossey Gorillas Fund in November 2019 after gorillas trekking. The center is very interesting and you learn a lot of informations about mountain gorillas and their environment as well as on other gorillas subspecies. The visit of the center is very interactive and didactic. Moreover, the fundation is very active in supporting gorillas, and you can heythem in continuing their actions
U highly recommend to visit Dian Fossey foundation

Small, but interesting. They've broken ground on a new center, which I imagine will be much more informative, but this is still worth a visit if you're nearby

The Karisoke Research Center (and the current Rwanda HQ for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Intl) is located in Musanze, about 20 minutes from the Volcanos National Park, where all gorilla trekking begins. There is no charge to visit the Center. We found the small museum about Dian Fossey's work and gorillas in general a perfect introduction to the trek we were going to do the following day. There are nice placards explaining everything regarding Dian Fosse, a recreation of her 'office" space featuring her personal desk and other personal items. The staff member at the reception desk was helpful and informative. There are also interactive video clips at various displays that show short video clips of gorilla behaviors and vocalizations.

A worthwhile visit - small but very well laid out museum explaining details regarding the gorillas, their conservation efforts and Dianne Fossey’s work with them. Provides an excellent introduction and background to a visit to the gorillas.
