This was a once in a lifetime experience. Me and my family (kids aged 9 and 12) stayed at the Olpopongy Maasai village for 24 hours. The night we in the maasai boma - the boma is very basic but comfortable, for one night is totally OK. I think this is the best way to experience and understand the maasai culture. The lecture in the maasai museum was so educative, the people there were so knowledgeable, they took us on a long bushwalk and taught us about the plants and natural medicines, about the animals and how they behave. The cook was also amazing, food was super delicious, breakfast was great. The greeting dances were memorable. In the night as there is no electricity in the village we saw so many stars. And the view to mount Kilimandjaro from the village is spectacular as well.
Thank you for the great memories!

One of the most striking, beautiful and genuine experience in Tanzania ! We stayed 24 hours, one night, which enabled to better understand and dive in the Maasai culture. The two guides, Kimani and Fredi, are so kind and interestind! The cooker Isaya is also fantastic. What a memorable time with all the community

Our visit (with overnight) was most enjoyable, the program is well thought out and the activities are interesting. The bushwalk was especially exciting (we got to see a giraffe and even "learnt" how to throw a Maasai spear). The boma is very representative of what a real vilage looks like but is very clean (and the visit there doesen't include disturbing actual Maasai people going on about their lives).
The food was very good and we really enjoyed the campfire dinner.
Our guide, Freddy, was knowlegable and friendly.
One thing you should consider though is staying overnight, on one hand, staying in the hut was deffinetly an expirience but you really shouldn't do that if you are sensitive to stiff mattreses. in our opinion you could manage to fit in all of the important activities in one day (espacially if you arrive early), but the dinner was really good so decide for yourself.
And just a small tip: think beforehand what would you like to ask Grandma over tea to make the most of your visit to her.

We visited Olpopongi in August 2019 and it was an unforgetable experience. We´ve visited many community based project in other countries and this project is one of the best planned and managed. Of course it is not 100% „authentic“ village as the people who were there don´t live there permanently (they come there from surrounding villages), but one can learn a lot about the culture, history, traditions, medicine herbs and their way of living. We were very lucky as we were only group there (11 people), so we´ve got full attention. We highly recommend do the tour and to stay overnight in traditional Massai houses, enjoying delicious dinner and have a nice time around the fire. All place was very well mainained, clean and food was delicious. Only one thing would need some adjustment and that´s accessoires. The prices were a bit higher and quality lower compare to other shops in Tanzania. Some accessoires were already damaged or quiet old. So improvement of quality is recommended. Last but not the least we really appreciate that people from Olpopongi were not chasing us for tips, as it happens in many places very often. They just mentioned once at the begining that there is a tip box, so if we feel like to leave some we are welcome. So no pressure.
Thank you Masaii community for taking care and sharing your culture with us. It was an amazing experience and we will never forget singing and laughing time around the fire. We would deffinetly do it again. Worth to visit and it was one of the best experiences in community based tourism in Tanzania.

We were greeted with a nice welcoming song and dance and made to feel very welcome. This strikes me as a village set up in the Maasai style but more for accommodating tourists for an overnight stay. With that said it was a very informative visit with a nice little walk nearby. They were friendly and informative with a tea provided at Gramma's hut. and the trip was well worth the drive and the money. All in all a very nice day out.

This is a cultural education center designed for tourists. It was clean, the food very good and Maasai very open and friendly. One of our participants would not stay in the hut - so this is a caution to others.
You could likely get the same information from visiting other Maasai botas on the way to Serengeti - and much cheaper.

The village gave us an interesting insight into the Maasai culture and we learned how they use the local plants to help with everything from tooth brushing to disease. The museum is small but very interesting. We visited the houses and had lunch there.

Do you want to visit for just one hour? Because honestly, it is a place you have to spend a night at to be able to enjoy.

I gave Olpopongi a "3" rating when if should have been a "4". I do wish that Tripadvisor had a rating between "average" and "very good".
