ALL WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE HOING THERE

DAY BEFORE YOU CLIMBING
- sleep well
- eat before going up
- drink water
- if you seek, feel bad, headache don’t go please

HEALTH CERTIFICATE
- buy it in clinic (valid 3 days)
- 50k
- clinics are down in the city

DRIVER
We ordered driver from hotel but before we pass at 7pm by bikes. driver will wait for you and help you with all things. So pick one :) prices are depends from how far is your hotel (we were close so it was 450k for 4 people max)

TICKETS
- you can buy online (be careful if you are going on Sunday, you must pick Sunday, not the day before, after 00 it’s a new day)
- 100k weekdays and 150 weekends
- you can also ask guide or driver to buy for you
- if you don’t have you gonna stay in line

PARK
Great service, they have toilets, cafes, no line if you have a tickets (you can buy online!)

GUIDE
YOU SHOULD HIRE A GUIDE they can show you safe ways to go down and up!! We saw few couples who almost fell down few times because boyfriends “knows the way”. Don’t believe in it, you need a guide (from 250k please support locals). Don’t believe people who said “everyone going there so you can just follow the crowd”, no, because it’s dark and plenty of ways and you have to know where to go! And of course safe spots!

TIMING
Better if you come at 1.30, start to go up at 1.55-2.00am, start as much early as you can

So at 3.30 you will be on the top of crater
30-45 minutes to go down (it’s tricky and slippery if it’s rainy)

Downstairs it’s way too smelly, so you will need a mask! With a mask some people go very slow because it’s hard to breath

25-30 minutes to go up (maybe more because it’s one way to go up and down and some people are slow and late it can be traffic there)

At 4.30-45 you will go to the sunrise spot, be careful it’s almost road close to the crater, you can fall down!!!

From 5.20 it’s cloudy but will be first lights of sun

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU
You must have:
- water (even you can buy in some stops in post 3 and 5)
- warm clothes maybe gloves
- sunscreens
- hat
- glasses
- mask with new filter
- hiking shoes
- rain jacket
- cash in case you want to buy a taxi upstairs or buy some soap
- light
- snack

It’s windy upstairs so when you gonna sweat, so jackets and warm clothes gonna help

TOILETS
They have few toilets upstairs 5k in few places

TAXI
Locals offer taxi to go up and down, if you feel tired do it (prices from 500k to 150k)

TRASH
And please keep you trash with you!!! Because upstairs someone drop bottles

AFTER it takes 1-1,5 hours to go down, drink more water to feel good

WHAT ELSE TO SEE?
5 minutes up they have waterfall with acidic water, looks cool. Free entrance, 1-1,5 hour track, you will pay for a driver 150k extra to wait for you while you are there

Save trip, guys!

Recently visited Mount ijen as part of a larger tour of eastern java with my wife. Overall we found the attraction quite unique and interesting and would recommend it to others. Here are a few tips I would have for others considering a trip here.

* Consider bringing a second set of clothes - on our hike up we got hit by torrential rain which soaked even through our rain jackets. The crater rim is very cold at night and thus we were quite relieved to have brought up a towel and a second set of clothes which we were able to change into to avoid getting bitterly cold before sunrise (at which point the rain had cleared and we got great views).

* You need a medical clearance to hike Mount Ijen - This is apparently a new thing thats recently been introduced and I think there are similar requirements for hiking other places in Indonesia like mount rinjani. It’s hard to see whether it’s a genuine attempt to make sure it’s safe for tourists to do so or just another money making venture. Anyway ours was included in our tour price and it consisted of answering a few questions and then having our vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse rate and oxygen saturations taken. It wasnt at all comprehensive. I have heard you can get the medical done prior to commencing the hike at the trail entrance but it might be easier to do it the day before at a local clinic. I’m not sure how much it costs (as I mentioned ours was included in our price of our larger tour) or how aggressive it’s enforced.

* The blue flame isnt a natural phenomenon but it’s actually just created artificially. You see the blue flame occurs when Sulfur burns. The flames that normally exist in ijen are put out by the company so they can harvest the Sulfur. In order to amuse the tourists though they lay out some Sulfur at the base of the crater rim and light it on fire for the tourists to take photos. You can actually just collect some Sulfur pieces yourself when you’re there from the top of the rim and do this when you get home if you dont want to descend to the crater lake.

* It’s actually illegal to go down the crater to the lake and so any injuries sustained may not necessarily be covered by travellers insurance. Despite being illegal though everyone does it and they even give you gas masks so you can do this.

* Bring a light as it’s dark on the trail. You can hire these

* If you dont want to descend the crater rim you probably dont need to start hiking at 2am like we did (we got up at 1am and drove to the site to start hiking at 2am, which is the earliest you can start the trail). The hike was 9.7km return with a 612m elevation gain and took us 1.5 hours to get up and 1 hour to get down. This means we got to the rim at 330am and then had a 1.5 hour wait in the cold for sunrise as we decided not to go down to the crater lake in the rain. If you dont want to go down to the lake which I think isnt necessary you could probably just start hiking at 330am to 400am.

* There is a very disturbing sight here for those who dont want to hike. The former Sulfur miners have actually started carting people up the mountain in little carts for a price of 1.2 million rupiah. This option was actually quite popular with Chinese tourists who I gather dont like exercise.

Ijen Crater is one of the volcanoes in Indonesia which has its own uniqueness. One of the interesting phenomena is the Blue Fire, a green, acidic crater lake, sunrise point view and stunning natural scenery.
To visit this location you must be in a fit condition, because the track can be categorized as quite difficult for people who are not used to climbing.

We started our journey from the hotel at 11.30 pm and reached the starting point at 1:30 AM. The official hike opened up at 2 am, so we had a bit of time. Despite the night, we were greeted by a lively scene of eager climbers, open cafes, and shops.

Our guide, Nur, informed us that at 1 am 1,000 people had registered for the climb!

The climb itself, starting at 2.00 AM, was both physically demanding and visually stunning.
The hike to the summit will take from 1 to 3 hours depending on your speed and physical condition.

The path was crowded, and the practice of using human rickshaws to ascend, though practical for some, struck me as incongruent with the spirit of the trek (sorry to say, it looked like slavery in Ancient times - something you can’t see often in the modern times 🙈).

The real challenge started once we started to go down towards the crater: steep and slippery rocks, crowds of people combined with the crater's sulfuric fumes were very intense, and the protective masks provided were essential.

Witnessing the blue flames was a highlight, despite the difficulty and danger in navigating the crowd. The descent was challenging yet rewarding, offering breathtaking views at dawn and a stark reminder of the harsh conditions faced by local sulfur miners.

This trek is not for the faint-hearted but offers a unique blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural insight.

Tips:

- Undergo a medical check-up and obtain a medical certificate confirming fitness for the climb, required for registration.
- Start the ascent between 2-3 AM to ensure you see the blue flames, which typically disappear by 5 AM.
- Wear proper hiking shoes to safely navigate the steep and slippery terrain.
- Bring sufficient water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the long path.
- Carry a strong protective mask and, ideally, eye protection to guard against the intense sulfuric fumes and flames.

It's amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The blue fire and the crater lake are fantastic and it's really a good hike for me.

Note the trail is quite challenging and a good walking shoes and walking sticks are a must.

Once in a lifetime experience! Although the tour takes place in the middle of the night and requires a fair amount of physical effort, it is worth it. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes as climbing up and down the volcano is challenging. The volcano provides views you can't experience anywhere else!

The view is amazing but I was disappointed with one thing, namely the person who offered the train, if your body is oversized you will be talked about and cursed at by fellow train workers and told to get off several times when the incline is steep, please educate the train workers again because I was immediately reprimanded on the spot in front of the workers others, and until this moment I can't forgive his words

Incredibly impressive!! Started at 12:30 a.m. in Banyuwangi, 45 minute drive to base camp, waited there for guide. ATTENTION: now you need a health certificate (January 2024)!!! No entry without it! Get it the evening before in clinic, weight, height, blood pressure, check, about 4 euros. 1.5 hours partly steep on a good path to the crater rim, then 30 minutes down to the blue fire, good shoes and headlamp a must!!!
