Ijen Crater is a crater located on Mount Ijen, East Java, Indonesia. This crater is famous for its blue fire that appears at night and its turquoise crater lake ¹.
Ijen Crater has a diameter of about 722 meters and a depth of about 200 meters. This crater lake has a very low pH, which is around 0.3, making it very toxic and uninhabitable by living things ¹.
In addition, Ijen Crater is also famous for sulfur mining carried out by traditional miners. They bring sulfur obtained from the crater to the top of the mountain to be sold ¹.
If you want to visit Ijen Crater, there are several tour packages available, such as a 3-day tour package from Surabaya or Bali ². Make sure you prepare yourself well before traveling, because the terrain to be traversed is quite difficult and the weather is unpredictable.

We started out at 0300 with our brilliant and very experienced guide Teguh who explained to us that “the blue light” everyone was going on about was a tough and dangerous area to get to and if we wanted to go we could sign a disclaimer with him and he would wait for us. He showed us the sign the government had put up to warn people of the danger, and he was surprised people still went!
We took his advice not to go ( met lots of people later who said it was crowded hard to get a picture and they were a bit disappointed)
Walking up was tough, at the beginning the “ Ferrari taxi” being offered and followed by them , I’m 68 (husband 71) reasonably fit and totally wanted to walk this it put me off somewhat being stalked so in the end I firmly said NO they realised my tone and left us 😊
I just stopped a lot to catch my breath got to the top in about 2 to 2and half hours . Sky started to clear and the wonderful sight of “the lake” came into view, definitely worth the hike , just an amazing view
(I’ll just google the blue light later to take a look 😏)

We did Bromo 2 days before. Lured to Ijen buy the promise of the blue fire. Didn't get to see it unfortunately. The guides don't about it at all. Nonetheless, arriving at 0200h and setting off in a massed group akin to a marathon start, hundreds of tourists started an Olympic event worthy climb to the crater before sunrise. Be warned - those found unfit, the locals can pull you up (and down) on the carts. Don't bargain too hard. It's backbreaking work for them. Going rate 1.5 million IDR. Bromo is easy compared to Ijen.
I'm truly glad it was nearly pitch dark as the climbing was tough. Seeing headlamps at a steep angle above you as you climb puts in perspective how steep the slopes get. A A personal victory is declared as you reach the crest. We made it at 0430h before the sunrise. Pay back is worth it in the panoramic view and elation of other climbers. Now it's time to feed your mobile cameras and social media accounts. There are even Telekomsel mobile antennas up there.
Don't rest on your laurels though. Keep your strength for the trip down where you clearly see the epic climb you blindly did earlier. Every volcano it seems is different. The Ijen climb, with or without the blue fire, is definitely worth it.

The hike was about 10km to and fro. It was quite steep at some part. There is food stall and toilet (need to pay 5000) along the trek. The view at the top is very nice but dangerous as u walk along the ridge of the crater without any barrier. A lot of tourist fell to death here.
According to our guide (Can't verify true or false), the blue fire is season based and u need to be there at 12am to start the hike. And the path descent to the lake to view the blue fire is very dangerous. The insurance do not cover in case of any accident.

If you like nature you should visit this place, easy track, amazing view and good facilities. But unfortunately we're late to wake up and started to hike at 5am and we're late for sunrise.

What an experience this was . Early morning start up the mountain. You can use trolleys it you want . It's bout 3 ks up. Not cheap if you do but the boys work really hard. Lots walked. The walk down into the crater is a bit of a challenge so a basic level of fitness if recommend. Once there tho it's amazing. Actually in an active volcano crater. As the sun rise the bluefire lava appears all be it hard to find this day. Watching the lake change from black to beautiful blue at sunrise was beautiful. It's rough and rustic down there . It's cold and you need a gas mask at times. Once in a lifetime thing to do. Just jaw dropping.

This whole hike, including going down into the crater near the lake took approximately 12km return. The hike getting to the crater is pretty much all up hill, it is very steep! Once you go into the crater it has uneven steps and it steep also. I would say this is a must do, make sure whoever you book with and once you get into groups try to go into a fast group so you can go near the lake, going into the crater which is a cool experience. We loved seeing the huge lake bubbling, the smell of sulfer which stains you clothes aha, and just overall the amazing workers who wait around for the Sulfur. They get paid so little to do this job and gosh, its hard work, having to carry approx 60 kilos back to the main carpark after they get the Sulfur which they can wait around for hours. We did not see the blue flame at this time, but our guide did burn a small amount of sulfur to show us the blue fame which was pretty cool.

Seeing the wonders of nature in Ijen Kawah, uniting with the magnificent beauty of nature
To be able to merge with the beauty of Kawah Ijen nature, there are a few things to pay attention to.
First, make sure you bring the right equipment, especially if you intend to see a blue fire at night. Bring a flashlight or headlamp bright enough to help you see clearly the stunning blue flames.
Second, don't forget to bring a mask or a face cover. Because Ijen caves emit toxic gases, such as sulfur dioxide, which can endanger your health. By using a mask or a face cover, you can protect yourself from this toxic gas and still enjoy the beauty of Kawah Ijen nature safely.
In addition, make sure you wear comfortable clothes that are consistent with the weather conditions in Kawah Ijen. Because this crater is located at a fairly high altitude, the temperature around it can be very cold. So, make sure you bring a warm jacket or clothes to keep yourself comfortable while exploring Ijen Kawah.
Melansir from wartapantura.com A visit to Ijen Kawah can also be an opportunity to learn about the life of the surrounding communities. Around this crater, there is a village famous for its sulfur mining. You can see how the local community works hard to collect the sulfur from this crater. It was a very valuable experience to understand their life and work.
During your visit to Ijen Kawah, do not forget to maintain hygiene and sustainability of nature. Do not dump waste and avoid damaging the flora and fauna around the crater. The Ijen Kawah is a natural heritage that we must guard together so that it can be enjoined by future generations.
Ijen Kawah is a stunning place with its charming natural beauty. From the enchanting blue fire to the blue-green crater lake, Ijen Kawah offers unforgettable natural experiences. By preparing ourselves well and keeping nature clean, we can merge with the beauty of Kawah Ijen and create irreplaceable memories. ( jeany89)

Skrevet 26. november 2024
can I please confirm, the trolley takes you all the way up to the top to the crater rim? but you'll still need to manage on foot into the crater? how tough is going into and out of crater? Thanks.
Skrevet 16. november 2024
The trolley can take you to the rim, to get into the crater you need to walk. It is extremely steep and uneven. If you go with a guided tour which you should, they will ask you if you are a fast of slow hiker. If you go with the slow group you will not go into the crater.

Hi, I came across a recent 2024 article saying that Mt Ijen's blue flame is opened to tourist to visit up close ONLY if you have a guide, a medical note from doctor saying youre in good condition, and a gas mask. Is this true?
Also, do you have to have a guide even if you don't plan to go down to see the blue flames? can you hike independently?
Many thanks!

I'm planning a trip to Indonesia in the first half of October. On my destination list are East Java (hikes to Bromo and Ijen), Bali and Komodo islands.
I've read mixed opinons online: that October is a still good month for those places, and that October is the beginning of a rainy season. What weather can I expect? What are the chances of a rainfall making hikes to Bromo and Ijen impossible?
Would you recommend doing this trip in October, or should I try to go in September?
Skrevet 11. august 2023
And for the Ijen crater you can already see the blue fire, because climbing the Ijen crater can start at 02.00
Skrevet 13. august 2023
Hello, we are going to visit ijen soon, I would like to know if there is the possibility to see the blue flames or the are still closed. Thank you
Skrevet 14. juli 2023
blue fire is still closed due to rising crater activity, but for sunrise you can still visit it. And the climb opens at 04.00 in the morning
Skrevet 18. juli 2023
Hi there, we're planning to go up the crater in the next 3 days but heard that it's currently closed. Has anyone been there recently or knows more about it? Thank you
Skrevet 26. desember 2020
Note that the mountain path is now closed on the first Friday of every month.
Skrevet 31. august 2022
Hello, is it possible to rent hiking boots at the bottom? Someone mentioned that it *might* be. My trainers have really flat bottoms so can be slippery and I wouldn't be confident doing it without hiking boots (I left mine in a hostel somewhere!)
Skrevet 10. februar 2020
Hi mmm I am not sure about that. I don’t recall seeing anywhere where you could hire boots from. To tell you the truth runners are sufficient as the main path up and down is pretty good and even when you hike down into the crater they will be fine. Maybe you could contact a tour operator and run it by them they may have heard of somewhere. Good luck and enjoy this amazing experience:)
Skrevet 10. februar 2020
Do we need to go down the crater to see the blue fire? Or can we see it from the rim?
Skrevet 5. februar 2020
Yes, u must go down to crater if u wanna see blue fire
Skrevet 12. februar 2020
I am travelling to east Java and want to see the blue lake on ijen.. I only.want to see the lake by day. I have a 6 year old boy and want to know if he would cope and if it's possible to only see the lake by day, does anyone have any suggestions on if it's ok for a child or if I'd have to go alone? Also if I could just visit the lake in the day and the best way to do that? Thanks.
Skrevet 18. november 2019
I think you’d need to check if restriction to climb up to crater top during day due to the miners work.. I believe it’s closed to tourists in the afternoon. The local tour operators would be able to answer. You could walk most of it but it is tough, there are trolleys to bring you to the top if you’re struggling they offer lifts at most points of the climb up.
Skrevet 20. november 2019
I'm looking to climb ijen about 2 weeks into December and was wondering the best way to do it. I'm a solo female traveller but don't want to be stuck on a tour with lots of people and everything on a schedule. Is there an easy way to meet similar people and arrange for a local guide or something like that to take us? Many thanks
Skrevet 13. november 2019
If you don't mind being alone, just take a plane to Banyuwangi then ask your hotel to arrange transportation from airport & to Paltuding Ijen. There is a gate at Paltuding to buy ticket to kawah ijen. The gate is open at 12 midnight, then you may ask the person in the ticket box about local guide who can guide you up to the peak to see sunrise & see bluefire. If you want to see both bluefire & sunrise, better start walking from 00.30.
Sometimes the hotel also provide private tour to Ijen. However, the cheapest way is go to directly to Paltuding Ijen & pay directly to local guide at the gate (you pay the guide later after you finish your hiking).
