In the region of Transylvania - the traveler will find a situation that is most likely unique to Europe - of course there are castles in the Loire valley, the Maginot line , the fortress belt of Antwerp ... still we are talking about a region of 103000 sqkm where one shall find several hundred fortifications. (some from the ancient times some, from the medieval times till the modern days. )
Now when it comes to the villages that had at least fortified churches and not a fortress or stronghold beside this fortified church - the list is about 200 villages in the region of Transylvania.
The majority are to be found in the counties: Sibiu, Brasov, Mures, Harghita, Alba and Covasna. From these almost 200 , there are 7 that are on the UNESCO world heritage list - so here these are:
1. Biertan
2. Câlnic
3. Dârjiu
4. Prejmer
5.Saschiz
6.Valea Viilor
7. Viscri
Beside these as said there are in the vicinity of 200 - better or worst maintained fortified churches in the area.
It all started when the Hungarian kings invited the Teutonic nights to guard the borders of the kingdom - a century latter they banished the Teutonic nights and invited Saxon settlers to Transylvania whom they than ordered to fortify their village churches, hence the huge number of fortified churches that still can be see 3, 4,,5 centuries later in this area.
This summer I had time just for Crisitan - Brasov, Sanpetru - Brasov, Harman - Brasov, Prejmer - Brasov - last year I've visited Cristian - Sibiu, Cisnadie - Sibiu, Cisnadioara - Sibiu - but there is much more to see.
So if you are planning for the next summer holiday - put Transylvania with it's fortified churches on your short list - it is definitely worth it.

The best known villages with fortified churches in southern and south-eastern Transylvania are Biertan, Viscri, Prejmer and, to a lesser degree Malancrav, Harman and a handful of others (when I say a handful, I mean you don't need all your fingers to count the rest of the best known ones). That leaves some 200 other villages with fortified churches unknown to the general public, which are just as worthy of being visited (that's, of course, if you're looking for beauty, genuine rural life, rich history and a bit of adventure) as the best known ones.
In my opinion if you come to Transylvania to discover rural life and historical places, you'd better shun the best known attractions - especially if you rent a car or book a private tour with a driver guide. That's because you'll find a much deeper and more genuine rural life in other places than in Biertan, Viscri or Prejmer and just as much beauty and rich history as in these three locations.
Are you looking for big and imposing fortified churches? Then go to Mosna (Meschen), Archita (Arkeden), Homorod (Hamruden) or Dealu Frumos (Schönberg) among others.
Do you want to see other paintings just as old and beautiful as the ones at Malancrav or Sighisoara (in the church on the hill)? Go to Darjiu (Székelyderzs) and especially to Ghelinta (Gelence). (These two churches are in the Szekler part of south-eastern Transylvania which is also rich in old & beautiful fortified churches, but far less known than the ones in souther Saxon Transylvania.)
Never seen a medieval toilet? There is one at the fortified church of Ațel (Hetzeldorf).
Ever wondered where was built the easternmost cistercian medieval abbey in Europe? Go see its remains at Cârța (Kerz).
Now, of course, most of these fortified churches are almost abandoned and in varying degrees of deterioration, just like some of the UNESCO fortified churches (think of Valea Viilor church). But all of them can be visited. If you have a private guide, you no longer need to think about what to do in order to visit them. If you look for some adventure and travel by your own means, don't need to worry too much: on the gate of each of these churches you'll find a pinned sheet of paper with a telephone number on it. Call that number and someone will come to open the church just for you (in most places you're expected to buy a ticket or to leave some money, but it will never cost you more than what you pay in order to visit Biertan = about 3 euro / person). If you speak either Romanian or German it will help as, most often than not, the person with the key is one of the last Saxon dwellers of these villages and he/she will gently tell you plenty of stories about the old days.
Generally, the roads among these rarely visited villages are not in worse shape than the ones you take to visit the best known attractions. As a matter of fact, I rarely traveled on such a bad road than the one which leads to Viscri and I don't remember ever having met a worse one.
As far as food & accommodation is concerned, either you'll find guest houses even in less known places (sometimes even stunning accommodation & food, like in Copsa Mare or Cincsor!!!), or you'll never be too far away (50-60km in the worst case) from some town.

We stayed in Malancrav in one of the village houses. This is a very interesting experience, and is quite basic accomodation if you don't mind this kind of thing. The village itself has changed little over the centuries, and old ways of farming are still carried out. The villagers gave us a warm welcome.

Beautiful old buildings, very fairy-tale. Malancrav in the better setting, in a quiet village. Malancrav also has painted walls inside. Biertan has a very old lock which is a masterpiece of its time.

We enjoyed Biertan SO much, that hubby was willing to drive to Malancrav on our way back to Sighisoara.
The road from Laslea was not bad.......we expected MUCH worse. There was a tour bus in Malacrav and the turistas were inside the Church, being given a lecture on 500 yr. old frescoes.
We stay a while.....and enjoyed walking outside the church and left for Sighisoara,.
I'm sorry we didn't drive around town. Do the town if you drive there.

The Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania are not to be missed. They are like beautiful jewels in the jewel box of Transylvania. Although Biertan is the most famous, there are many scattered over the southern region of Transylvania waiting to be discovered.

Hi - I am travelling alone to Romania via Cluj at the end of June / July and want to hire a car for a week to visit Transylvania as well as the painted monastries in the north. I am a walking guide of the Basque Pyrenees and I am looking to go walking during this week - medium level walks which weave in and out of the villages, woods, farmlands etc. and give me a chance to meet the local people, learn a little about their traditions, gastronomy and language (similar to the walks I run from our own farmhouse in the Basque homelands of the Pyrenees). My question is - as a single female travelling alone - with a week with a rental car starting in Cluj - where would be the three places / villages / areas you recommend for me to stop in to get a real behind the scenes feeling for Romania. (I know if someone asked me this about the Basque area i would know of places that don't always appear in the guide books). THANK YOU to anyone who can give me an idea. I have been dreaming of going to Romania for almost 30 years!
