Only for experienced hikers!. Definitely not a hike for beginners, you also need to have proper equipment. A couple of the trails are closed in winter but you can find easier ones. Views are spectacular but keep in mind its a full day so you need to leave early especially in the winter. Unlikely to meet wildlife and take extra water.

Piatra Craiului Național Park îs an amazing National Park. It has great mountains, forest, villages and wildlife. I saw foxes, deer, wild boar, birds and chamois in this park on different places. We saw multiple tracks of bear, wolves and lynx. There are a lot of tracks to follow and they are gorgeous. It is an absolute must-do when you are in Romania. In the winter months it is free of charge.

Pictured from a helicopter, Piatra Craiului looks like a giant dinosaur skeleton surrounded by forest. The massive white limestone ridge crosses the mountain from North to South. The highest Peak (La Om) is 2.238 meters altitude, offering stunning views.
Unlike many reviewers, we started our hike from South side of the mountain, which is less packed with tourists. After parking the car at Brusturet chalet, we hiked trough Valea Seaca gorges to the Grind shelter and started to climb the Eastern slopes to the summit (La Om, 2.238 m altitude). The slope is very steep and requires some effort. There are spectacular views all the way up. The clouds and fog will play a dramatic show for you, fighting the limestone walls.
We took a snack on the summit and followed the red spots marked pathway on the Southern Ridge to Saua Funduri. This is a really breath taking trail. Sometimes is so spectacular, it's beyond imagination.
From Saua Funduri we descended to Brusturet chalet, tired but happy.
It's essential to take water with you, as much you can carry, as there are no water sources on the way. It's important to have good weather condition, so don't hike the Southern Ridge during winter time or during a rainy foggy day if you're not trained. Check the weather forecast before going there!
Brusturet chalet is reachable from Podu Dambovitei or Sirnea. You can hike the Southern Ridge from Curmatura chalet as well, but you need more time.
The name of this white limestone mountain (Piatra Craiului) means "The Stone of the Prince"

Few notes:
1. You won't meet any bears. You won't even see any. Nor lynx. What's more stressful is when you meet shepherd dog blocking your way. They don't act like normal dogs so it's hard to see their intentions. Best to avoid them and simply go around.
2. Ticks - almost every meadow has loads of them falling from the trees! I was paranoid after one landed on my neck. Protect yourself!
3. Piatra's ridge is quite challenging. We walked from Magura village up to the refuge on very top and it was way too much for one day. If we had to do this again we would stay overnight at Cabana Curmatura.
4. If you get to "Shelter November 7" with a plan to walk to La OM peak, please plan it well ahead as you need good weather to do it because there is no path down. It's either make it or break it from that point.
5. Recommended apps: komoot, muntii nostri, google earth (for 3d view), view ranger
This park is better than Bucegi Mountains. It provides more alternatives and has beautiful forests.

Green pastures, pine woods, and bare rocks at the top. The mouintains look impresive, but to go to the crest and some of the peaks, be prepared for a difficult climb, with some via ferrata parts. But there are about 30 marked trails within the park, ranked from easy to very difficult, so everyone can chose what trail suits them the best. Some trails are not that well marked (probably the ones less popular), so I had help from Muntii Nostri app to find my way when I was in doubt.

We walked the loop up to Curmatura Chalet and back. We paid 10Lei for two people on the website. We were never asked for tickets but the cost is very reasonable and goes towards maintaining the area so was happy to pay. It took about four hours (2.30-6.30). Is definitely an intermediate track as it is quite steep at times. I wouldn't recommend it in bad weather as I imagine it could get quite muddy. We left the car at the car park with a small fountain and took the trail up through the forest. It was a steep incline and took about an hour to reach the top. We emerged at a gorgeous meadow with panoramic views. The walk from this meadow to the Curmatura Chalet was an additional 45 mins to an hour and was pleasant and less strenuous. We didn't stop at the chalet although it appeared open. We then took the yellow path down (you come to a crossroad where you can choose to follow either blue or yellow markers down. They were both signposted as taking 1.30-2hrs. We crossed meadows following streams and then a track down through the forest. It was a little steep at times. At the bottom we emerged at a road path through the gorge and we followed this perhaps another 50 minutes back to the car. We came across only a few other people and couldn't believe how tidy the track was (hardly any litter). Highly recommend!! Gorgeous scenery and well-marked paths. Wear good shoes.

We took a self-guided two day hike from Brasov via Zanesti. Although the maps were not always accurate, most locals, taxi drivers etc were very friendly and many spoke sufficient English to point us in the right direction.
Once in the Park we hiked the low grade difficulty yellow and white flagged route, which took us through some wonderful pine forests, open woodlands and farmland to the Curmatura Cabana, about a 5 hour trek. The Cabana was a most welcome sight, offering a basic set menu of delicious and hearty food, fit for tired travellers.
The toilet was outside as was the brisk, cold (mountain water) shower. It is essential to book as the Cabana was full and turning people away. The tourist centre in Brasov (if open) can arrange.
Many visitors were from northern European countries, visiting this and other Romanian Parks as they are less busy and cheaper than others in Europe, especially during the winter ski season.
The next day we followed the medium difficulty 'blue and white' flagged route, which took us back down the mountain and through a spectacular limestone gorge, before winding back to Zanesti.

Park oferuje nam bardzo duży wybór różnych szlaków, które są znakomicie oznakowane. Można podziwiać przepiękne widoki oraz spotkać dzikie zwierzęta (nam udało się natknąć na kozice górskie). Cisza i spokój oraz piękne szlaki zapewniają doskonały wypoczynek. Dokładne mapy szlaków dostępne są w punktach informacji turystycznej (np. w Braszowie przy Porta Schei).

Hi, I'm visiting next month to do the easy/moderate hiking trails. Is there any specific opening times, is it free? and finally are there maps available? not sure how this works, it's my first time! Dear people,
We are planning our August trip to Romania.
We want to check options for easy tracks in Piatra Craiului National Park.
We want to find tracks that will take from 3 to 5 hours.
I was not able to find exact tracks on site of the park pcrai.ro/lang-en/8/Vizitarea/harta_turistica.html.
The map below has a lot of tracks and we do not know where to start and where to end
Where can we find maps of tracks?
Could you recommends easy tracks that starts near Bran?

Hi.
You can check the app Muntii Nostri. I used it to plan the hikes and to find my way if the markings have been sparse.
In town of Zarnesti, wich is close to Brasov and Bran, there is a visitor center and map with all the treks and their categorization according their difficulty.
One it seemed easy was Zarnesti Town- Zarnesti Gorge- Cabana Curmatura (where you can have nice meal, or spend a night).

Quick question for you! I will be doing some hiking early October and staying at Curmatura for one night but have been having a hard time finding info on the parking situation. Is it possible to park overnight at the trail head in Zărnești? Thanks!

You can park your car where the marked trails start, approximately at 1 km after you exit from Zarnesti. The place is called "Fantana lui Botorog", this name representing a spring.
