No matter the road to Slanic Salt Museum is not the best you can find, the museum itself is breath-takening.
Large mine, exploited allready for thounsands years are magnificent.
You have to see it with your own eyes!
Really a place to put on your list!

The electric lift was shut town, the access is now done with micro-buses. The waiting time for the micro-buses is high, there is no organisation where the line of people is formed. I suggest creating a maze, in order to keep the line, like the ones they use for roller-coasters. The mine itself isn't well managed, there is always the rist of parts of the ceiling collapsing. Someone is making a lot of money, putting visitors at risk.

Do not expect to visit a museum. There are some artifacts (the exploitation started in [the year] 1900), but there are only a few in display. What is impressive is the sheer size of the mineral deposit and the way human activity carved gigantic tunnels that look more like over-sized cathedral ceilings. The entire place gives the impression of overwhelming natural grandeur disproportionate to the anything that is man-made. Stepping in the main corridor, I felt utterly small as a human being, people look the size of mice, maybe even smaller. The lighting is very artistic and not too ostentatious (except the "Christmas-y light installation by the bridge). A section of the mine functions as an ambulatory for aerosol treatment. There is also a section dedicated to the ancient history of the country (statues of the local ancient king "Decebalus" who fought against the roman king, Trajan). I also enjoyed the "van ride", in total darkness, through the tunnel that lead to the mine entrance. It's a very nice place to visit in a rainy, cold day. I tried this fun game with my preteen: spot the communist emblem on the walls of the mine.

Mi pare costi 20 lei a persona.

I'm writing about the salt mine (underground). It seems that some people here wrote about a museum with rooms and guided tour but the photos are of the underground mine.

We went there unsure of what to expect. We read some reviews on old buses, unsafe, badly organised.

In October 2019 the buses looked quite new (to the point that I thought that maybe they are a few months old). The road to the mine it is by bus, not sure on how long (10 minutes? 15?) in a very big tunnels. Yesterday there was a school group and the waiting time was about 20 minutes probably.

The salt mine inside is really spectacular! Huge, very told, could be a good concert hall. If going with kids there is a basketball ring to play so get a basketball ball or some random ball. It's possible to rent table tennis bats, billiard.

The toilets in the mine were clean.

The areas without access to the public looked well protected to avoid anyone going there, anti-slippery mats in some areas that could be slippery, etc.

So, we found the mine huge, very beautiful. The access by bus for 10-20 min down the road was with new buses (or not as old as it was said in previous comments).

We would recommend to go and enjoy if being in the area.

What was promised as a “trip of a lifetime to an underground Salt mine” more resembles something from the Flinstones

Two basic toilets for males and females and urine all over the floor is what greets you at the start of the “tour”

The man winder is like all of the infrastructure and has degraded to the extent that it now is inoperable.

Instead you are herded like cattle into mini buses and driven 20 mins over bumpy non-maintained underground roads like Aust coal Mines had in the 70’s.

Total lack of safety and upon one of the group having a medical issue there was absolutely no emergency response protocols except tour guides and drivers standing around having a smoke and shaking their head.

Romania is like travelling back in time and the mine at Slanic is no different although if you have absolutely nothing to do and want to waste a complete day by all means put this on your list.

Would not recommend

This is approx 110 kms from Bucharest

Go early as later on the day the queue is long .

I was told that there was an elevator which takes to the bottom of the mine some 250 meters but now visitors are being ferried inside the mine by minibuses

The drive is a winding road of 15 minutes

Carry warm clothes as the temperature all through the year is approx 12 deg

The mine has been kept well maintained and gives the insights of the mining technology during early days

The beautiful Slanic prahove is a place that every tourist must be.
The way down to the main is with a shuttle, the price is 22 Lei for adult, 16 Lei for a child 7-18
You must wear worm clothes, because it is very cold down there.
Have a good time.

My grandparents live in Slanic, my grandmother worked at the salt mine her whole life as a chemist. I enjoyed taking a tour with my 82 year old grandmother, it offer interactive digital features and a complete history of salt mining. If you are in Slanic it would be a great idea to visit.
