Went with pretty low expectations. There are not many artifacts but the many touch screen displays provide a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of Petra. Took us about 2.5 hours. If you only look at the artifacts on display, can do it in under and hour.

This museum is a MUST if you visit Petra. We almost gave it a miss and I'm so glad we didn't. It displays artefacts that are literally thousands of years old and covers the history from 1500BC. The way it's laid out is very well organised and captivating. There are incredible mosaics and artefacts. It took us around 90mins and I took my time reading almost everything. This museum was a highlight of our trip.

Very nice museum with interesting and informative displays. Great external architecture and very pleasant space internally. Only marked down 1 star because the gift shop was closed and the toilets were not well looked after.

I first visited the museum a month after it opened in 2019. It didn't have much in terms of artifacts so I returned in January 2020 thinking the staff had enough time to set up the displays for what I thought were artifacts that may have been hiding in the back rooms. Nope. When I asked locals I had befriended during my trips to Jordan, "where's all the stuff?" They jokingly (and serious at the same time) responded "it's in people's homes." International archaeological teams have been partnering with Jordanians for over 100 years off and on at the Petra site (work is still ongoing). Many items have been excavated by these teams as well as by the floods that occur about every 1-2 years that uncover hidden gems (knives, coins, etc.) I do not know if this is true or not but enough people have told me about it that found items disappear and are on display in some peoples' homes - they rationalize that it is part of their heritage as Bedouin and therefore entitled to them.

While the museum itself is impressive - a shared venture with the Japanese government (i.e., the Japanese paid for most of it) - there isn't much inside. The building is influenced by Japanese architecture. Inside, it is simple with clean lines. There are about 5 rooms that you walk through. Most of the stuff is what you will find in other museums across Jordan (The Jordan Museum, the Roman Theater museums, etc.) There is a lot of empty space for a large building (another reason why I thought more items would be displayed). I am under the impression there is a lot of space (back rooms and other levels) that is not available to visitors.

There is nothing distinct to see (no "must see") but if you are in the area, I'd recommend going especially since it is free and only a few steps from the entrance of the Petra Visitor's Center. The hours are 8:30 AM - 7:30 PM. The first time I went I read all the story boards and placards and it took me less than 45 minutes to walk through. The second time was less than 30 minutes (all depends on how interested you are and how much you have seen before). The museum claims there are over 280 artifacts; I find that hard to believe. If you do not have time to visit, I wouldn't worry about it. You won't miss anything.

There used to be a small museum near the restaurant area of the Petra site. With the April 2019 opening of the Japan funded Petra Museum, visitors now have an excellent additional and complimentary experience to visiting the ancient site. Objects and statues, which were found in and near the site can now be examined up close. Video and text panel provide additional information. By the way, it is free and located near the entrance to the site, and therefore very accessible
