The official name of Zuiganji Temple is Matsushima Seiryuzan Zuigan Enpuku Zen Temple. Its predecessor was the Tendai sect Enpuku-ji Temple, which was founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin in the early 9th century, but was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609 and has been the family temple of the Date clan ever since.
We visited Zuiganji Temple after visiting Tenrin-in Temple and Entsu-in Temple, which are located to the west of Zuiganji Temple. Continuing on from Entsu-in Temple, we entered almost the middle of the Zuiganji temple grounds, where we found the reception desk where we could purchase admission tickets.
There was much to see within the temple grounds, including the main hall and kitchen, both national treasures, as well as Seiryu-den, Zuiganji Temple's treasure house. After that, we headed towards the sea, where we found some interesting cave ruins on the cliff to our left.

One of the highlights of sightseeing in Matsushima. Masamune's presence stands out here too. It is lit up at night during the autumn foliage season. The bonfire at the entrance livens up the atmosphere. Once inside, the blue and green lighting contrasts with the autumn leaves, which is quite a sight.

Speaking of sightseeing in Matsushima, this old temple is a must-see.

It is located very close to the coast.

The temple is spacious and has a very luxurious design.

The guide explained it to us, but if we had had some prior knowledge, we might have been able to understand it better.

One of the highlights of sightseeing in Matsushima. Zuiganji Temple, a national treasure, is the family temple of the Date clan, and exudes a sense of prestige. It feels more like a feudal lord's residence than a temple. There are many things to see, including the museum and the stone Buddha statues on the grounds.

"There's no temple quite like Matsushima's Sayo Zuiganji," and so I chose Zuiganji. I visited once 15 years ago and left my umbrella in the umbrella stand in the main hall, but it's not there anymore. In addition to two national treasures, the main hall and the kuri, the temple has many important cultural properties. It was founded in the Heian period, but its presence seems to have increased during the time of the Hojo clan and the Date clan. The temple buildings are not so large in size and number, so it doesn't take much time to worship, but it takes a little over an hour to go around the whole temple, including the cave ruins and the garden. A major renovation about 10 years ago has been done to fix the decaying parts, and it's a bit disappointing that the two national treasures feel new.

It's one of the representative temples of Matsushima. The temple has been through many hardships and tribulations, such as changes in religious sects and names due to those in power at the time, and damage caused by major earthquakes, but it still retains its serene yet imposing appearance.
Not only this temple, but also many other temples in the surrounding area have historic sites of caves and grottoes, probably due to the geographical features of this area. Although it's not possible to enter these historic sites, they are places where many historical monks have been trained and memorial services have been held, and visitors can recall the appearance of the temples of the past. In the precincts of the temple, there is a red and white plum tree called "Garyu-bai" which was brought back from Korea by Lord Date Masamune during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and planted by hand.
There is a charge for the main hall, the kori (storehouse), and the museum of treasures, and photography is prohibited in all of these buildings. In the main hall, in particular, you can see many gorgeous and beautiful folding screens, but as mentioned above, photography is prohibited, so you should make sure to take a good look at them. There are steps to remove your shoes when entering the main hall and the kori, but as long as you are careful with these steps, the temple is accessible to people with disabilities such as wheelchairs.
