Panoramic view of Hampi and Tungabhadra river.
35-45 mins to climb. Check the weather , on cloudy/rainy days no visibility of sunrise , but the climb /views are fantastic.

This was on our list from day 1, Matanga Hill is the most popular sunrise/sunset point, and every portal talked about it. So, when our local guide cum auto driver mentioned to avoid it, we didn't pay much attention. We started climbing in the early morning, before sunrise, it was dark, the steps were uneven, and at one point the trail was quite treacherous. and at one point it felt quite dangerous. Well, people were climbing with kids and babies but the steep climb without rails/proper steps was daunting. nothing to say about the view and that's what egged us forward, in the hindsight we should have just listened to our local guide's advice. there is another approach I am told which is better but one can access it only during daylight. So use that if you wish to climb this hill.

A must go to place when u are in hampi...this place is near the virupaksha temple....a good 200mt climb to reach on top...its mesmerising to see the sunrise from there....just wow...cant describe it in words...there are many paths for the climb...the most popular one is through the Hampi bazaar. The view has Virupaksha temple , tungabhadra river , krishna temple , narsimha swamy temple etc...all can be seen from here...climb is tricky at 3 places wherein u need to be careful, descent is very comfortable....

Wonderful place for sunset ans sunrise. However the path uphill is risky in patches. Not recommended with kids below 5.

This is the place best to view the sunrise. its quite a walk but once you reach the top the view is amazing. When you visit this place during the morning the walk will be pleasant, rather doing it for the sunset.

The viewpoint from Matanga Hill is absolutely the biggest highlight of my Hampi trip. It truly brings the scenic sights of Hampi to life.
A note must be made that the hike upwards over boulders, some of which can be smooth and slippery, can be quite vertigo-inducing as some parts are not protected by railings.

Matanga Hill has a brilliant view for both sunset and sunrise. However the climb to the summit is very difficult. Although it takes 30-45 mins to get to the summit, navigating the rocks can be a challenge for elderly people. I would recommend this only for people who are comfortable trekking tough terrains.
For others my recommendations are:
1. Malyavant Parvat: You can drive almost to the summit
2. Anjanadri Hill: Birthplace of Hanuman. You will have to leave the vehicle at the foothill. But this hill has well built steps as compared to Matanga

This is a must visit place at the Sunrise/Sunset. It gives stunning views of Hampi and ruins around it. It has a moderate/difficult climb. Need to have a good footware to go atop. There are few temples at the top as well.

Our guide highly recommended a walk up Matanga Hill to enjoy the sunrise. We started our climb at 5:30am from the Bazaar Street side. We were the first ones there that day and the ascent was rather tricky because we had lit up the way with our mobile phone torches and the path is extremely rocky with some big gaps between boulders and steep drops on one side. After about 35-40min, we made it to the top and boy was it a sight to behold.
Once at the top, you realise that this hill is good for both the sunrise and sunset as you get a 360 degree view from the top. We stayed up along with 100+ other people to enjoy the views. Our descent however was on another side towards the Achutraya Temple Complex which I would highly highly recommend. The walk down is easier on this path and it ends at a lovely temple complex that is very picturesque.

Hi,
Planning to visit Matanaga hills. What time did you start your hike & how much time does it take? Can one visit with a 6-month-old kid? Would be helpful if you share your inputs :)
Thanks

The hill is the best spot to view sunrise and sunset. To reach the top of the hill, you need to climb atleast 250 steps. The stairs will be little slippery. Pls mind your steps during morning while climbing the hill. Pls return back soon in evening from the top of hill

How is the trek? Is it steps or is it rocks and boulders? Can old people make it? Climbing steps will not be a problem, but are there any steep or slippery rocks?
Skrevet 6. august 2017
The steps are carved out of rocks and are not proper. I do not think it is a good idea for the elderly.
