... and in terms of size, it is number 2 behind the Jama Masjid in Delhi (!).

The route from the north - along a small lake - is breathtaking. The building is also on a small hill, which you approach by walking along an avenue and always have a great view of the mountain and the building.

When you arrive in front of the building, you are faced with a huge staircase at the end of which is the portal of the mosque. You have to climb it, and when you get to the top, you are rewarded for the effort: a fantastic view of a huge building opens up.

The starting signal for this building, initiated by the then ruler Shah Jahan Begum, was given in 1877, but it could not be opened until the 1980s.

You should just enjoy the view of the huge inner courtyard in peace - and then let yourself drift a little. There are plenty of places to sit, and you can easily vary the perspectives for the photos.

The interior of the mosque is – compared to the magnificent exterior – rather quiet and unspectacular. But ultimately, according to the Muslim interpretation, the mosque is not a place of worship, but ‘only’ a prayer room. Visitors should reflect this view with their clothing and behavior.

Very large, sprawling mosque with fairly well maintained premises.
Administrator and other staff is keen to orient the visitor with history, significance genuinely.
In and around the premises needs to be cleaned well and access road can be laid once again.
Overall a very serene spiritual place.

It is a very big mosque with a huge campus. The original structure , built about 150 years back , has stone pillars , jalies and ceilings with intricate and beautiful carvings. I highly recommend a visit to this place while in Bhopal. Please avoid the prayer timings while planning a visit.

Jama Masjid Bhopal.
We had passed through Bhopal many times. We had stayed with relatives at Bhopal also many times. We had never visited Jama Masjid. Last year during Heritage Walk in Ahmedabad while at Ahmedabad Jama Masjid, which was huge, we were told this was not the largest Masjid in India, it was the second largest, The largest Mosque/ Masjid in India was the Jama Masjid of Bhopal. With a capacity of 175,000 people and an area of 23000 square meters, It is not only the largest in India but in all of Asia and the seventh largest in the world. Though popularly called Jama Masjid, it fully justifies its ‘official name’ “The Taj-ul-Masjid” which means ‘Crown of Mosques' The construction of the mosque was started by Shah Jehan Begum, who was the ruler and Nawab of Bhopal, in the year 1871. After her death in 1901, the construction was continued by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum. Work on the mosque had to be stopped due to a shortage of funds. Eventually, the mosque was completed in 1971. Jama Majid is one of the finest examples of mogul and Islamic architecture. There are three distinct halls under three very simple and elegant-looking domes. The domes are built of white marble the complete structure is made of pink sandstone. The three halls are connected by massive pillars and cusped interconnecting arches. It is marvelous to see the complex way in which all three halls are interconnected by these arches built over well-engraved huge pillars to make a beautiful-looking main prayer hall. Two 17-storied octagonal minarets flank the main prayer hall. These minarets are visible from large distances.
There is a very large courtyard in front of the prayer halls with an ablution tank in the center of this courtyard. The courtyard is lined with asylum on its west and domed dalans/verandahs on its north and south, however, the one on the eastern side has been damaged in the past. Due to its disinclination of being the biggest mosque, its grand construction, and its great beauty, it attracts tourists as well as devote Muslims alike in large numbers.

The mosque is famous in Bhopal hence locating it should not be a problem. The entry and exit of vehicles happens through one gate. There is ample space for parking your car inside. Just ahead of car parking is small garden.

One needs to walk some 200 meters to enter mosque. There are lot of local muslims who come here to offer namaz hence you will find a bit crowd outside.

I spotted no ladies here hence asked my wife to sit in garden and i went inside to click the pic of mosque. When i went inside i saw that i was only one wearing Jeans and TShirt.

The courtyard is huge, i spotted one chacha sitting at entrance hence i took his permission to click the pic. He was very good, he came with me and shown the location from where one can get full view of masjid.

The architecture of mosque is amazing and it appears more scenic in evenings.

I apologise if my review hurts to anyone's religious sentiments. I am writing this only for people who intends to visit this place with family particularly with kids.

I reached this place around 4pm in daylight. As soon as we entered thru main gate and parked my car, we were in awestruck due to sheer presence of Muslims around everywhere within the mosque from entry gate to parking area, we did not find single tourist who might have come to visit the magnificent mosque. There was no government security OR any presence of officials at all. This was worrisome and we were perplexed.

There is 200 meter walk to get inside the mosque to see it standing in front of you. I was with my wife and kids. Then people from muslim community started pouring in this place in large numbers, it could be usual OR accidental, the must have come to visit the mosque only, however I can say that most of them were local. We walked few steps from parking area. Unfortunately after taking few steps, we decided not to go inside due to our unique circumstances see we were in. We came out quickly and drove back to majestic upper Lake and spent our time well.

I clicked one picture from outside.

Taj-ul-Masjid is the largest mosque in India and second largest in Asia. Literally meaning crown of mosques it is spread out in a prominent location. You can see it as a big landmark of the city.
It is a magnificent structure with a great specimen of Islamic architecture. Once inside you are struck by its capacity to hold 175,000 people.
I was struck by its cleanliness and maintenance. Women are also welcome and you can take photos inside.

We visited this place just to see the biggest masjid in India. It was beautiful in the evening with it’s lightings on. It’s so huge and it’s courtyard is very spacious. You have lots of nice hotels around to taste kababs and tikkas. It’s located close to the old market which is very crowded. Rickshaw will be the right choice to reach there
