Jama Masjid Bhopal.
We had passed through Bhopal many times. We had stayed with relatives at Bhopal also many times. We had never visited Jama Masjid. Last year during Heritage Walk in Ahmedabad while at Ahmedabad Jama Masjid, which was huge, we were told this was not the largest Masjid in India, it was the second largest, The largest Mosque/ Masjid in India was the Jama Masjid of Bhopal. With a capacity of 175,000 people and an area of 23000 square meters, It is not only the largest in India but in all of Asia and the seventh largest in the world. Though popularly called Jama Masjid, it fully justifies its ‘official name’ “The Taj-ul-Masjid” which means ‘Crown of Mosques' The construction of the mosque was started by Shah Jehan Begum, who was the ruler and Nawab of Bhopal, in the year 1871. After her death in 1901, the construction was continued by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum. Work on the mosque had to be stopped due to a shortage of funds. Eventually, the mosque was completed in 1971. Jama Majid is one of the finest examples of mogul and Islamic architecture. There are three distinct halls under three very simple and elegant-looking domes. The domes are built of white marble the complete structure is made of pink sandstone. The three halls are connected by massive pillars and cusped interconnecting arches. It is marvelous to see the complex way in which all three halls are interconnected by these arches built over well-engraved huge pillars to make a beautiful-looking main prayer hall. Two 17-storied octagonal minarets flank the main prayer hall. These minarets are visible from large distances.
There is a very large courtyard in front of the prayer halls with an ablution tank in the center of this courtyard. The courtyard is lined with asylum on its west and domed dalans/verandahs on its north and south, however, the one on the eastern side has been damaged in the past. Due to its disinclination of being the biggest mosque, its grand construction, and its great beauty, it attracts tourists as well as devote Muslims alike in large numbers.

Went to visit in the morning. Enough parking space. Saw young children and teenagers memorising the Quran inside the Mosque. On one side are the classrooms where students are taught the basics of Quran and languages like Persian, Arabic and English. Had an enlightening conversation with a Teacher about rights of Muslim women in the past era and now.

The Jama Mosque is located in the middle of an extremely bustling and busy bazaar in the centre of the old city of Bhopal. It is surrounded by small shops selling everything from saris to stationary. Inside though, it’s peaceful.
The 19th building is approached by very steep steps from one of three entrances. There is a large courtyard with some lovely tall minarets, but not much else to see.
All in all, the mosque is definitely worth a visit.

I visited this mosque which is centrally located near Chowk Bazar a couple of days back. Constructed in the 1600's it is a Deobandi Mosque and has three beautiful domes and two very tall minarets. Very well maintained it has some really nice carvings on its walls. Overall a a nice and peaceful place of worship just adjacent to the chaotic Chowk Bazar.

A beautiful threshold where religion and learning walk hand in hand.
This grand structure is the standing proof of ShahJahan Begum.
This Masajid, is supposed to be one of the great mosques of the world just like the Jama Masajid in Delhi but is larger is space and height.
There are about 70 pillars and three gates to this place.
The Eastern gate is the highest about 40 feet in height.
It has around 120 rooms. Primary and Secondary levels in education.
Subjects that are taught in a regular school is taught here and also Arabic, Hindi and English. A huge library inside - very impressive.
The courtyard has a fountain.
The whole built up structure looks marvelously pink with those high arched ceiling and cold marble floors, the pillars are micro hand engraved with tools.
I remember there were hostels for these children who studied here.
The tall Eastern Gate and the Northern Minaret still stands tall at the back of my mind.
They do have a fitness center and a dining hall inside, The northern gate is artistic too.
The steps from the Eastern Gate are so many that it is not for the weak hearted. Yet, I would say, it is the stairs that one should take to see the beauty it beholds.
Its not just a place of prayer but a center of Learning too.
Modesty in dressing required.
Head dress too should be followed.
Maintain less noise.
