Lived there with my grandpa and grandma when I was a kid...I thought it was a great place...but didn't know any better. Swam in the water ditches and picked cotton and played football on the large grassy areas with the other kids. Special treat was going to Johnnie's market up the road by Vineland school

This is an historic migrant labour camp which is still in use today. Since it is fenced off and people still live here, one is probably just going to be able to see it from outside the fence. I have heard that one may be able to schedule a tour if calling in advance, but I don't know for sure. There's not much to look at, but it is important to see what these places are like and also to get a feel specifically for part of what the migrants from Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other places in that part of the USA went through when coming to California in the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, which is when many places like this originated in California. This one was specifically referenced in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. It is important to note that even though they were Americans and US citizens, and typically white, these migrants faced discrimination here and not only were they treated badly and exploited, but they were harassed, often driven out of town, etc., as if they were illegal immigrants and criminals.

Officially known as the Arvin Federal Government Camp, the migrant worker center was most notably featured in John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath. This camp was a government rescue center for distressed migrant workers fleeing the Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Various scenes from the 1940 film adaptation of the novel were filmed at the camp. The camp still aids migrants today. Tours with a presentation are available by contacting Sharon Garrison at 661-431-9418. On the National Register of Historic Places. From Bakersfield: (20 minutes, 16 miles) Take Highway 99 south. Turn left to merge onto Bakersfield Tehachapi Hwy/CA-58 E. Take the Weedpatch Hwy/CA-184 exit toward Lamont. Turn right at CA-184 S/Weedpatch Hwy. Turn left at Sunset Blvd. Community center is on right.

I was excited to see a piece of history in this area and the camp that I saw looked very interesting but there were fences around the camp & I didn't try to get inside. Perhaps I visited the area at the wrong time?? Also, there is apartment/housing directly behind the Weedpatch Camp that people live in currently, so I decided to leave.

First you cant see anything as everything is behind a fence. Second people live here it is on the grounds of immigrant housing. This is a historical place but it really needs help to be something spectacular. If you drive by be respectful.

A very interesting place, several folks volunteer to keep the place up, painting etc. They hold a Dust Bowl Day annually, lots of information about that era.

Saw a program on Sacramento TV. While in town came to see. Was disappointed it was closed up, but luckily a woman in the community center was hospitable and gave us lots of information/history about the small exhibit behind the fence. What little we saw was interesting. Reminder of the movie, "Grapes of Wrath".

After reading the previous reviews, I was so happy to find that there has been improvements made to the remaining buildings at Weedpatch Camp. It looks like they are being maintained and are fenced off so that vandals aren't going to walk off with things. This does not give the casual visitor access, though, to walk through the buildings, as it looks like they will only be open during the The Dustbowl Festival, but it was still worth the drive to see this place.

This is the camp that Steinbeck talks about in the Grapes of Wrath. Some of the buildings are still there and worth seeing.
