This is a wonderful place to enjoy huge redwoods. The paths are not narrow walking paths as they are in some redwood parks. Rather, there is a large expanse where you can stand on fallen trees, take photos, and not have to be jostled by other visitors. It is an absolute delight to experience the redwoods in this park.

Stunning state park with several groves of old growth coast redwoods. Great campsites under these trees. Wonderful trails, easy-moderate difficulty.

WOMEN NEED TO READ THIS!!! This park staff allows local male predators to carry guns in the park and terrorize women.
I was hiking solo with my dog (on leash) when approached by two older men with a dog off leash. When I asked them to put their dog on a leash, they became very aggressive. They threatened to slit my dogs throat if it hurt their off leash dog, I called the rangers in distress. The men continued to berate me and tell me they are superior to me because I am a women.
While I was on the phone with the rangers begging for them to send help, one of the men pulled a GUN from his waist and put it in the trunk of their car before backing up & trying to hit me.
I drove to the front ranger office just in time to hear “L Cooper” tell the men to leave before the ranger got there.
The women then told me the men were locals and they knew them. They proceeded to try and protect the men because of their personal relationship. I waited an hour for the rangers to show up only to be treated like a liar because the park staff was lying to protect their friends who they told to leave quickly.
Guns are not allowed in state parks and these predators were given a free pass by the state park employees who are their small town friends.
Women beware! This place is dangerous.

My husband and I camped here for two nights. The campground looked full on Saturday night but there was no noise after dark. Most people left on Sunday so it was very quiet. We walked on the Little Hendy and Big Hendy trails and the size of the redwoods is staggering! We really liked the trees on the Big Hendy trail. We took a hot shower ($1.00 for 5 minutes) and the shower room was clean.

This small park is a great place to stop on the way to the Anderson Valley. The park is on Highway 128 about 50 minutes from Mendocino. There are two easy walking paths available to visitors. Don't miss the Big Hendy Grove where you'll find the largest of the giant redwoods. There is a Visitor's Center and picnic areas as well as campgrounds.

Wonderful side trip while attending a wedding in Philo, CA. We went two days in a row and walked the upper and lower trail to see the incredible grove of trees. It is an easy stroll and both days we went there we here very few others on the trail. It was quiet and peaceful. Entrance to the park was only $8 per car. If you have time make the trip between winery stops!

On our first first to the area we wanted to take in a short hike that would give us a taste of the California Redwoods. After searching I found Hendy Woods on the way to our next destination. What was appealing to me was this is a smaller park that is less frequently visited by tourists. We found exactly that, there was one other group on our short little, approximately 1 mile hike, and the trees were amazing. I highly recommend this if you want the peace of the trees and not gobs of folks taking selfies :)

On our way back to San Francisco from Mendocino, we stopped off at Hendy Woods State Park for a picnic lunch. While there, we found d ourselves lured into taking g about a mile-long trail through redwoods forest. Magnificent and with scarcely anyone else about

Beautiful redwoods in a peaceful accessible park
We wanted to go for a walk and see redwoods before several winery appointments in the area. This is a beautiful park with many trail choices. Trails are well marked. We walked for about a hour through these majestic trees. Also electric car charger in the day use parking area.

Is there a good swimming hole at the park or nearby that has easy access? Are you able to walk to it? Or do you need to drive?
Skrevet 11. juli 2019
It's a short 10 minute drive past the park entrance underneath the bridge. That's the best swimming hole.

Are there any 4x4 trials in the Anderson Valley Mountains? Not looking for difficult trials, just something slow to crawl and enjoy the beautiful scenery and camp. Thank you.

None public and haven’t heard of any private.

Hi! I have a Cabin question that I cannot find the answer for. Is there room for a cot between the foot of the bed and the wall? Or in the cabin in general? Does anyone happen to have an actual floorplan?
Thanks!
Emmy
Skrevet 20. mars 2017
It really doesn't look like you could get a cot in there. I think you'd be OK with having the cot outside, and maybe you could have a small tent outside, too. There is usually a limit of 8 people per site. Check with the State Park staff on what you'd be allowed to do.

we have a cab over camper.....are there any hook ups or just dry camping? are the camp site okay for a cab over camper?
Skrevet 30. mai 2016
It is not a problem. Go to the park website for complete information. We did not camp this last visit, but we have camped here in the past. It is magical camping under the redwoods.

Road Trip with 2 small dogs w a stop in Boonville. I need to let the dogs stretch n run some. Is Hendy Woods a good place to do this? Is the Navarro River a good place to let the dogs play before heading up to Fort Bragg, all in 1 day? I'm the only driver and want to have lots of fun while still arriving in Fort Bragg with out being tired. Thank you for all your kind, reasonable suggestions. :-))
Skrevet 12. mai 2016
Dogs are allowed on leashes in the park. The river area in the park is wide and flat so a great place for the dogs to run and fetch but it is very rocky. Another idea is to go all the way to the coastal access area where the Navarro River meets the Pacific. There are many great places to stop on the way to Fort Bragg. Hendy Woods just has the beautiful redwoods that you will not find once you head to the coast.

Hello fellow hikers --
While planning my road trip from somewhere to the Mendocino Coast, I stumbled upon
Hendy Woods State Park.
I drove by last October, and this year, will return to Anderson Valley to possibly stop at Navarro VIneyards, but mainly enjoy the peaceful drive, listening to The Incredible String Band en route
to Elk or Mendocino.
MY QUESTION:
I thought it'd be interesting to walk to Hermits' Huts, to take pictures and explain the immigrant's history to my viewers. How long would it take to get to the huts from the trailhead? Which trail would I take?
Thanks!!
Skrevet 31. august 2015
It has been a few years since i hiked there. I don't recall the huts. Sorry. But I do recall how much I enjoyed Navarro and still order by the case with the almost free shipping to CT! Enjoyed the Anderson Micro brewery also! We stayed in Port Arena and had a great time at a Halloween party at the refurbished cinema house there, and don't miss the bakery there!
