An easy to explore cave, loaded more with legends than actual history (but going back to the Dacian people). There is a guide to walk with you. There are a lot of small bats and a lot of stone formations that play with your imagination. Ticket is 20 lei/person, cash only.

By far a better experience versus Muierii Cave. A very professional guide, answeing to ALL the questions, allowing tourists to walk at their own pace but keeping the group together!
Park your car on the plateau in front of the Monastery and walk a mile to the Cave!
Combine it with an ascension to Crucea lui Ursache (1.000m alt.) 1 hour trip! Picturesque vie from the top!
Go further on Cheile Oltețului and descend on the bottom of the canion to enjoy a small waterfall! Just another mile away from the Cave!

One of the most famous caves in Romania, and for good reasons.
Easy to visit, spacious, interesting things inside ("Dead man" painting, Zamolxis throne).

Starting from Polovragi Monastery , which guards as a barrier the end of the main street belonging to the commune, we dare to climb the gorges , initially along Polovragi Forest , a protected natural area for edible chestnut and Mediterranean vegetation . Leaving the forest, the steep bank on the right - Căpățânii Mountain and the guard on the left - Parâng Mountain , announce the entrance to Olteț Gorges. The forest road, of public utility, climbs smoothly, parallel to the Olteț river, which, from the abyss of its riverbed, separates the two brother mountains, still digging real gorges, with vertical walls, on the total length of 3 kilometers. The 800 meters of visit able gallery represent the great outflow, and the tourist gate is the downstream, which explains the impressive dimensions at the entrance and the general public. The first sector of the gallery (approximately 400 m from the entrance) has an exceptional emotional load because, being the most accessible part, it has been over time a refuge of locals: Dacians, healers, monks, each with at least a distinct symbol.

The road to the main entrance is a bit challenging but once you find a parking slot along the road you could continue walking and enjoy the amazing landscape of Oltet valley. The small river dig into the rock a 30-40 m deep and create a wonderful landscape. You will see on the one hand side the mountain with its rock threatening above your head and the deep valley on the other side where you stay with your breathe taken not being able to see the river flow down in the valley. The cave it is easy accessible to all people and very interesting guided tour being available only from time to time so you will be able to follow some explanations. Formations inside the cave have interesting forms and names after old goods.

A worth visiting cave. You can go up to it by car. The entry fee is 20 lei for an adult. The cave is interesting and quite long. There are also historical stories related to it. You should not miss it.

I visited Polovragi Cave also named Zamolxe’s Cave in August 2018 with my mom – 84yo and my son 10yo. The way to get there is not very clear, lack of signs but we had an app on the mobile – Waze- that guided us very well. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that I can drive the car up to the cave and find free parking too. It was easy in this way for my mom to get to the cave – she walks with a cane.
The view on the road that takes you to the cave is spectacular – movie worth it. The Polovragi Cave is visited with a guide and the admission tickets are ok. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Inside is not super big it is very beautiful. It reminded me of the massive Luray Caverns,Virginia, US. Pestera Polovragi is easily walkable, but no path made, for at least half way – for my mom at least – she returned back after a while, the ceiling was getting low. Me and my son continued to the end with no problems. The temperature in the Polovragi Cave is about 12-13C so it is cold, and a sweater would be welcome. We did not have any special footwear and we were ok. We liked it and we would revisit it if we would pass again by that area.

We have visited this cave after Pestera Muierii, a much better preserved and interesting cave. Our guide was a bit rushed, even though she has provided plenty of explanations. There are not too many memorable things about this cave, however I would not miss it. Very slippery inside, so make sure you wear proper shoes.

A must see in the aria . Very interesting cave and a very nice guide .Local people say that the spiritual leader of the Geto-Dacians, Zalmoxe, would have lived in the Polovragi Cave.Is a warm and damp cave , with 800 meters from a visitor gallery (of over 10 kilometers). The cave hosts a hibernation colony of bats of cave .
