This man used what he had to make a unique dwelling place on the hill.
It was perhaps 2015 when I visited, so I hope the "house" still stands. I know local officials wanted to tear it down.

Apparently this is/was a place to see in Cambria before it was purchased by the present owners from the artist/builder who created this wacky place using found objects and concrete. The new owner will show the place by appointment but since we couldn't be sure when we would get there we decided to just drive by and check it out without reservations/appointments. The place is fenced off with a sign for contact information and so really is only visible from the road. It's a short drive from the main drag of Cambria and there is really little to no parking in the semi rural/residential street it's on. You can only get a glimpse of the front of the place and see some of the construction materials. It's worth about a 3 minute look. Don't bother.

I live in the neighborhood up the road from this attraction. It has sold and signs are posted "Private Property - No Trespassing." People were hopping the fence and trespassing before the signs went up. For anyone wanting to go by and see it from the outside, PLEASE pull over into the turnout across from it. Parking anywhere else, or standing in the street, creates a hazard for yourself and those who drive this narrow, curving road.

CLOSED - NO TOURS - the property was sold and is closed
It was incredibly trashy before - stuff dumped there, that is gone. Looks better, but CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC

I thoroughly enjoyed this little piece of history. Wonderful narration full of humor by Michael. I almost didn't go in, and am so glad that I did. I was very touched.

We saw this on Trip Advisor and thought we would go by. Not sure what people see in this place. It reminds me of a house taken over by homeless people. Weeds out front. A broken chain link fence. There are other better things to see in Cambria!

Must have been great in it's day. Now it's fenced off and in dis repair, but history of it is interesting. Follow the signs...

You know, I read the bad reviews and they all said that it looked like junk heap. They obviously didn't read the printed info card posted out front or any review.
This is a very unique house with a fascinating history. It has been vacant since the late 1980s when the county forced the poor man, Art Beal, out. The man who bought the place tries to keep it repaired enough to tell Mr. Beal's story while preserving as much of the original history as he can. He is quite knowledgeable about Mr. Beal's life and tells you his story as he walks you through this completely unique house built using recovered items (trash). Mr. Beal's story is quite sad--it's one of heartache--but it's also one of strength. He was a man who wanted to be who he wanted to be and made no apologies for it. You learn how he built his house, how much of what is there is original (Mr. Beal's favorite robe still hangs in the closet along with many other items) and it is also filled with original art which I found just as fascinating as the original house. I could have spent three hours in there just looking around, sadly you only get about an hour.
When you pull up to the house, there will be a gate with the time of the next tour written on a little piece of tape. Do. The. Tour. There is so much more to this quirky gem than a picture from the front. He asks for a $10 donation for each adult, but it is totally optional. I gladly paid it because it was $10 well spent for this history nerd.
For all the haters who didn't read and are judgy about it's mere appearance, you really missed out on some interesting stuff. Of course, maybe they wouldn't find it interesting and that makes me sad for them.

Lets be honest, this place is quirky and very unique. It also looks like it is about ready to fall down. It is fenced to keep visitors out, but the fencing is not great. Maybe you can get a tour. I don't know. Otherwise, take 10 minutes to visit, take a picture, check the box, and move on to experience Cambria's other better charms.

is it possible to pre-book a tour by email (rather than phoning an international number from the UK)?
Or even on Trip Advisor? Staying in Cambria for one night and would like to fit this tour in at 10am (is that the first tour each day?) before we leave the area. Thanks....

Yes, my father, Michael O'Malley still gives tours daily. By calling (805) 927-2690 you may make a reservation. Or as stated before, show up on the hour from 10-4 and you might just be lucky enough to experience the knowledgeable and animated tours my Dad gives. Unfortunately, we do not get any help from the State or the County for up keep so we do everything we can on our own to preserve this State Historic Landmark. Any donation helps. Please call us directly is you have any further questions.

Sorry, we arrived unannounced and it was closed. Shame. We would have liked to have done the tour.
