If we’re being honest, aren’t there times when we need a moment to unplug from the noise and clatter of this world and just…be? Absolutely nothing demanding our attention except the moment we are living just then.
While there are many ways and places you can foster this kind of personal retreat, one of them can be found along the “Batiquitos Lagoon Trail” in Carlsbad, California.
I counted no less than 34 unique benches along the length of this approximately 1.5 mile trail, and all of them beckon you to sit awhile…and just listen. To the birds, to the sound of the breeze rustling through the leaves on the trees, or maybe just to the sound of your own breathing.
While walkers, runners, and leashed dogs are all welcomed on this trail, bicycles are not.
For those interested, a clearly posted QR code provides access to a self-guided tour and a Nature Center is free and open to the public on the West end of the trail.
All 3 entrances to this trail can be found along Batiquitos Drive and each feature a convenient parking lot.
The trail is nearly entirely unpaved, so your enjoyment of it will be reduced if you access it after it has rained.

Not the easiest parking to find and small parking lots but worth it. Be prepared to walk down sandy ramps to get on the trail around the north side of the lagoon. We saw a handful of egrets and some ducks but not much more because most birds had flown north for the summer.
It’s about a 3 mile walk on level ground with plenty of different flora to see. Bonus is that it’s free.

My wife and I were in the Carlsbad area for a week, and took the walk along Batiquitos Lagoon twice. Nice and level walking path with beautiful Eucalyptus trees, sea grasses, and of course the lagoon itself. Lots of water fowl to view.

We easily found a space in November but I can see at busier times of the year parking would be a big problem. We entered from the middle parking location. Access is down a steep slope that most wouldn’t be able to navigate. There is accessible parking down either end of the trail (not a true loop) but parking was even more limited there.

Carlsbad has an amazing trail system. The lagoon trail is one of the easiest and flat. Runs alongside the Aviara Golf Course with great views almost every step. 1/2 mile markers plus interactive trail guides (using your phone) guides walkers. End to end round trip is three miles.
No bikes. Main reason is probably that the trail is not wide enough. Neat nature center at the Western end. Dogs are fine but must be leashed and thankfully people pick up after their pooches.
Parking probably a problem in the weekends, but I think street parking is allowed. Check out their website.

I have a "must" for your visit here. Stop off at the Nature Center and pick up two things: (1) the "Trail Map" and (2) the "Self-Guided Trail Guide" to the 26 "stops" along the way. The text is clear, concise, and informative.
The entire trail is only 1.6 miles long. This is a great place to walk if you have an hour or two. If you have binocs, bring them (we didn't). But, in spite of that, we had a great observation of an osprey picking up a fish on its third dive in the lagoon water. Neat!

I am staying at Omni La Costa Resort and one of the recommendations for a run was to go to this place. The total length of run from the resort to the trial begin, trial itself and return from the end of trial to the resort is about 8 miles. The trial portion itself is roughly 3 miles (unless you run it in both directions) and except a short (200-300 yards) access is very flat. Nice place. I went on Saturday around 10 am and it was not very busy.

My title says it all. This a FLAT hike which is just over 3 miles roundtrip from the western-most trailhead next to the visitor's office. The trail is sandwiched between the lagoon and golf course, and offers excellent views of the marshes and birds. It's an easy way to get your family some safe outdoor exercise during this pandemic, especially if you are bringing older family members or whiny young kids. Not strenuous at all. Parking is very easy to find.

Excellen walk or run with views of the lagoon. Nice small nature center when opened. Popular with locals & pet owners.
If you walk from west to the east - you came upon Aviara Golf Course which you can enter have a drink of water (dogs too & a treat) and even partake sitting outside at the restaurant lounge.

We love to walk along the flat trail at Batiquitos Lagoon each time we come to visit our son & his family in Carlsbad. The walk by the water has signs along the way to point out some of Nature's interesting creatures (herons, ducks, & even pack rats). There is also a small museum that children like to explore. Parking is either in a small parking area or in the neighborhood streets. Dogs & strollers are welcome.

Get off the 5 on poinsettia lane and then go straight through Paseo del Norte, next turn right on batiquitos drive. Lastly, turn onto Gabbiano lane and drive all the way to the end and you will find the start of the trail. Also- there is parking at the entrance but if that is filled up you can park in the neighborhood surrounding it. Hope you have a great time!
