Had a great day walking through the Botanic Garden. Lots of flowers in bloom on a bright sunny day. Wasn't too crowded. Easy parking. Restrooms were a bit hard to find and the gift kiosk there had a very limited amount of items for sale. Bring water and comfortable shoes. Overall a beautiful place to visit.

Beautiful gardens with an abundance of variety and lovely paths to walk. My friend and I logged 5 miles strolling through the gardens.

We enjoyed the walk in the California Botanic Garden for the first time. It's probably become one of our favorite gardens to visit with family. If you're familiar with Huntington Library Desert Garden, this is a much larger scale of desert plant, flower species. It's a gorgeous place to take a walk and very peaceful.

A pleasant walking or jogging environment. This "garden" is lot more than a garden. It is a park with a wide variety of California environments. I spent two hours walking around the various trails . If I lived in the area I would go there regularly. Peaceful.

We Thoroughly enjoyed our walk out body Lil Baby in a lot of California natives. Cactus chaparral plants. Large native oak trees. A great walk. Largely shaded. Good to support this place

Walk in 86 acres garden, give yourself two hours if you like to see native California plants, even in the summer time, it is hot and hey do have many benches. They have two restroom locations. Keep restrooms very clean. Even they provide sunscreen, insect repellent and antibiotic ointment for you inside the restroom. They have California Fan Palms, Joshua Tree, lots of oak woodland, sage garden, even have outdoor gallery, and ponds.

We visited the California Botanic Garden (formerly the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) in the morning while we were in Claremont for the May college graduation ceremony. After the fact we learned that the 96 acre venue is the largest in the state dedicated to California native plants. The garden is among the best botanical gardens we’ve ever visited and we’ve seen amazing ones in and outside of the US.
There are three main areas to visit, SoCal Gardens, Mesa Gardens, and California Habitats. We toured the first two in the morning, had to leave, and then returned in the afternoon to see the final section. We found the plants and trees in the SoCal and Mesa Gardens to be very well marked and rich with unusual varietals we’d never seen.
Because it was May, the garden was rich with flowering plants attracting hummingbirds and pollinators. We also enjoyed the small mammals (squirrels, rodents, and something we didn’t recognize!) along with the many geckos and birds that live in the gardens.
There are many different sections within each area, e.g., the Wildflower Meadow, Mountain Stream Garden and Fan Palm Oasis within the SoCal Gardens, and you’ll have to pay close attention to your map to navigate through the many minor paths leading off the major ones, but it’s well worth your while to see the remarkable array of plants. Perhaps because we toured the California Habitats section in the afternoon when it was brutally hot, we enjoyed it a little less than the other two, so I recommend visiting early in the day depending on the season.
We spent two hours just visiting the first 2 gardens so plan accordingly. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and have time early in the day to tour.

Enjoyed our visit to the Gardens. It's a relaxing journey through various areas.
A very nice employee helped us with directions and facilities when we were there.
I will say as someone who has minor mobility/flexibility issues the hike was a challenge, and may be more challenging for people with accessibility needs. (If there are other options I didn't see them)

Visited on a Saturday evening at 6:30pm so cooler. Nice easy walk followed the map.
Additional signage for plants would be helpful.

CalBG is a wonderful respite from the urban setting of Los Angeles county. Close to San Bernardino county in Claremont.
The Garden offers monthly community education events (online during Covid ). Great place to wander and host weddings or other special events. Now closed on Mondays.

Looking for opinions/input from older Plant Taxonomy nerds - I have the 4 volumes of Abrams "Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States" covering Washington, Oregon, and California, Vol I was first printed in 1923, reprinted in 1940, Vol II in 1944, Vol III in 1954, Vol IV 1960, printed by Stanford University Press, all written by Leroy Abrams, except Vol IV, which was written by Abrams and Roxana Stinchfield Ferris I assume because Mr. Abrams may have passed away?
In any case, the botanic illustrations of the books is incredible. The taxonomic portions are completely out dated, based as they were primarily on the various morphological characteristics of the various plant families used in the 1920,s to the 1960's or so. None the less - the illustrations are large, clear and (I presume), accurate.
Is there a graduate student out there looking for a project that would be willing to digitally cut up the books and provide updated taxonomy? It seems a shame that the incredible illustrations be closed up in volumes that no one opens because the taxonomy is so out-dated. Anyone know the status of copyrights on these books? Opinions?

Michael Leo Duval I bet you would find grad students at RSABG in Claremont willing to take this on.. They already have an extensive library with rare books behind a locked cage!
Is there a cover charge to view?

Hi Stephanie: Yes, there is an admission fee: $9 for adults, seniors $6, students $6 and children (ages 3-12) $4. Throughout the year they have "free admission days". Check out their web site for the dates. Hope this helps. Joan H
