Views for trillions of miles
jul. 2021
About 30 minutes up a winding road - go on a clear day and see for hundreds of miles. The historic buildiung at the summit has some intepretive exhibits too. Nice wildflowers in Spring.
The local astronomy club hosts public star parties near the summit once a month during the fair-wether season. Go up one of those afternoons and bring a picnic dinner - after taking in a stunning sunset over distant San Francisco you can get a view of star clusters, nebulae, even distant galaxies through large amateur telescopes. Check the park schedule for the dates.
In late summer there's a tarantula migration! Not to be missed for fans of creepy-crawlies.

Breath of Fresh Air
apr. 2021 • Familie
Several things to note on the drive up. #1)-Arrive Early! Especially in warmer months. #2-The Park charges $10 per vehicle for day use, cash is king, but they do take cards. Just makes it faster to get through the line if you do because the internet is slow up there #3-if you go on a weekend be aware of cyclists they love this area so share the road. #4- Take water! You can easily dehydrate. #5- Those who need wheelchair access beware that some spots are steep, access to the museum is a steep climb. (My strapping boys actually helped someone once to give a break to their friend who was helping them make it up the hill.)Although we recently found a lookout point that is wheelchair accessible with great views and easy for those with bad knees (like one of my boys who tore his meniscus).(lol) That access is on the left hand side road at the last parking area. Don’t go through the locked yellow gate, look left and take the paved road there and up a short ways is the access point.

Now for the good stuff—
We love this spot with our large family (9 peeps) we take our van and pack the back with picnic a lunch. There are 180-365* views every where. There are lots of places to stop and take great pictures, lots of animals like squirrels and birds to see. You can take your pet, BUT they’re NOT allowed on hiking trails. So stay on roads or sidewalks with pets and clean up after them please.
We personally like to go all the way to the top and park there’s a little museum and lookout point, you can see all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge if you’re lucky the fog hasn’t rolled in. In other directions you can see Livermore, Hollister and everything in between. Various places to stop for restroom break if you have younger kids. Oh did I mention some places also have picnic tables and water available, but not in every area. So come and explore and maybe you’ll find your own peaceful place to breathe in the fresh air.

No Parking Near Several Trailheads
mar. 2021
I live somewhat close to Mount Diablo, about an hour away, so I've come twice to do hikes that I found on All Trails. This place is beautiful, no doubt, but be aware that most of the listed trailheads are in random locations off a winding, steep, heavily biked road without any parking. Both times we've gone, the GPS takes us to a place without parking, and the nearest lot is 30 minutes up the mountain. Maybe someone with more experience in the area has some tips and tricks for navigating this, but it's been a real bummer both times. There are some pull-offs along the road, but really do your research before going, or just plan to hike from the main parking lot to lessen the disappointment. Lots of stunning views and wildflowers. The bikers really come flying down the mountain. The drive is not for the timid.

Great views

Visiting my sister and decided to drive to the top. It’s a road with lots of curves to the top and there are lots of cyclists (you go cuz I couldn’t do those hills) to watch out for. Once you get close to the summit, they don’t allow cars so you have to park and walk up. Quite a steep hill but just do it and you will be rewarded with great views. We didn’t have time to do any hiking but maybe another day. Everything is brown so it probably is prettier in later months. Definitely worth the $10 admission fee

Awesome Views at Mount Diablo State Park
jul. 2020
We went to Mount Diablo State Park. This is an awesome state park. One drives up the scenic rod to the top. One can get amazing views of the bay area and beyond when one reaches the top.

Great Views

Took a day trip up to this park with friends. The views on each of the roads was amazing. It wasn’t green. The ground grasses are all dead and yellow, but still provides some nice scenery. The tall trees are beautiful and green. The campsites are nice and the day use sites are too. Our kids had hammocks that they easily found spots to set up. The largest pine cones I’ve ever seen are spread all over the ground.

Be careful if you don’t want to stay the night, it is said they lock the gates when the sun goes down. We didn’t get locked in, so I can’t verify this, but we didn’t take any chances either.

Amazingly beautiful and peaceful space!

Mt. Diablo is a large park with rolling hills and spectacular vistas. We drove to the top, picnicking half way up. There are plenty of trails for hiking and lots of very fit bicyclists on the road. Highly recommended if you want to go to a beautiful place close to Oakland.

Great Views of the bay and beyond

Easy access by road or trail to great views and easy trails around the peak. Family friendly and easy to get to. The trip to the summit is almost as beautiful as the summit itself. Once at the peak there are amazing 360 degree views.

Mt Diablo A place for nature loving people
aug. 2019
Mt Diablo is situated near San Francisco and San Jose. It is the best place in the area for hiking, Sun-rise and Sun-set watching. Mount is surrounded by green lush forest. Of course you need a private vehicle to reach there, but worth visiting except in winters!

So Close and Yet So Far
jul. 2019
Even residents of Contra Costa County might find it time-consuming to reach the summit via Northgate Road. That's a plus, as it's rarely crowded at the top. On a clear, breezy day in July, the panoramic views in all directions were amazing. During previous visits in the winter, heavy winds and low visibility made it a challenge to spend too much time near the summit. The best trail to take near the top is the circular, partially paved Mary Bowerman trail with a short detour to Devil's Pulpit. At a lower elevation near Danville is Rock City, popular with picnickers and -- sadly -- scofflaws who like to carve their names on the majestic rock formations. Defilement of the boulders is the only reason I wouldn't give this particular part of the park five stars.
