Started out by taking a "short-cut" to Ferndale...two hours later, we got there but exhausted by the drive. Can honestly say that there was never a breathtaking moment except for when we looked over the edge of the winding narrow gravel road (sometimes - "path").
Won't do this again...BIG mistake!

If you like winding your way to the beach, this is a fun car trip. The hills are beautiful and the prize of the water at the end is great. We traveled from Ferndale and then out the other side through Petrolia. Going back to 101 through Petrolia is quite long.

We have a Ford Escape. On sections of this road, we were driving 10 miles an hour trying to avoid the potholes. On other sections, the pavement was perfect. If you watch where you are diving, any vehicle can drive this road. You don't need a FWD vehicle. The scenery was spectacular. We did the full drive which took us 4 hours including stops along the way to admire the views and walk on the beach.

You need a permit for this trail, which is good because it drastically limits how many people can be on it and makes it so that it stays relatively untouched wilderness. Most of the hike we couldn't see anybody except our own group.
I've been on a good few backpacking trips and had just finished a high altitude trek, so I was kinda expecting this one to be a breeze. It's not challenging from a cardio perspective because it literally at sea level and pretty much no elevation changes. However, walking on sand or loose pebbles and rocks for 3 days with a full backpack is pretty rough. The sand is usually sloped because it's the beach, so that is also rough. And of course, there is pretty much no shade, so it can get pretty hot.
We did the northern half of the trail in 3 days, 2 nights (Mattole Beach to Shelter Cove). It is important to plan out each day because there are parts which are only accessible during low tide. You need to look at a tide chart for your dates, but on day 1 we started at 7:30am, on day 2 at 10am and day 3 at 10:30am in order to time the tides correctly.
Our campsite after day 1 was beautiful, on a little bluff overlooking the beach and ocean. However, it was completely open and the wind REALLY picked up at night. The tent my in-laws were in actually broke from the wind in the middle of the night.
For day 2, we prioritized a sheltered area for the campsite. We found a really nice area in the woods that was very protected, BUT there was poison oak all around. We were super careful and I think we avoided it, but it was risky.
We saw lots of wildlife on the hike which was really really cool: seals, elephant seals, starfish, anenomes, sea urchins, muscles, deer, river otters, lizards, and lots of birds. We did also see bear poop and bear tracks on the beach, which was pretty cool.
Definitely recommend this hike, but be rest for some sore muscles!

We drove from the Ave of the Redwoods to the Lost Coast...beautiful drive through redwoods. The road is narrow and many curves. As you drive out of the redwoods, you begin to go through a prairie like area, then dramatically the crashing waves of the lost coast. The ride is like a roller coaster with the ocean following you for miles. As you drive away and up the mountain towards Ferndale, look back and check out the view of the spectacular coast. We were there during sunset and it was awe-inspiring. At Ferndale, grab an ice cream cone to match the Victorian old town.

I'd never imagine seeing the Lost Coast. We took a road in Ferndale leading up to it. It was quite treacherous. Narrow, tree-lined, desolate...but intriguing! A 4-wheel drive would be useful, NO big cars or campers for sure!

The drive certainly is difficult and long, the hiking arduous and not for the faint of heart. The scenery, the wildlife, the surf, the creeks, the camping, the night sky, the company, the whole experience, is one I will look back on as one of the best in my life. Give yourself time to enjoy the experience, an extra day, if you can. Talk with or reference someone who has done the trip previously and use their suggestions for a wonderful journey into Northern California’s truly wild Lost Coast.
The questions below don’t really apply...give yourself 4 or 5 days.

Have been trying to book a shuttle from shelter cove to mattle beach. Left messages at two shuttle companies but got no response. What to do?

You might try calling Inn of the Lost Coast for info. We drove the lost coast on Mattole Rd between Petrolia and Ferndale. It was amazing and spectacular, but I wouldn't have been in the car with anyone but my husband driving because there were no guard rails and used our brakes until they were smoking.

I'm wondering about Parking. I'm planning on doing a yo-yo of each section, the King Range and the Sinkyone Wilderness. I was hoping to Park in Shelter Cove somewhere; preferably for free. Any recommendations or advice? What is the parking situation at the Hidden Valley Trailhead?

It's too late for your trip, I'm sure, but in case anyone else has the same question ... There's a fairly large parking lot with free parking at the trailhead in Shelter Cove. It's a better option than Hidden Valley, which has a small parking area and would require walking or hitching up the busy and narrow Shelter Cove Road.
