I did this same tour in 2011 and my guide Nick was amazing. So I booked him again because I wanted an experience where I could have my hair blow in the wind, smell the lavender and eucalyptus and enjoy the gorgeous weather- and I was not disappointed. Nick is very knowledgeable about the area, about wines, history, etc. and very personable. My best friend and I learned much about wine and also Sonoma culture, history and its residents. We had an amazing and fun adventure visiting three places (we started late) and everyone we spoke with was knowledgeable and kind in giving of their time to us. I would never ride in a limo or bus when the open air is available!! The only thing I would change is to give Nick a mic so we could hear him better during the drive, like my tour guide at the zoo had in our Jeep. It was a beautiful day spent with fantastic people, delicious wines and lots of laughter and fun. Would definitely book with Nick again!!! Thank you Nick so much for providing this valuable service.

Finding a Wine Tour in Napa Valley was difficult for me and my husband. We are not into the big bus tours and did not want to pay for a private drive. The Open Air Jeep Tour was PERFECT!! Nick picked us up right from our hotel and drove us around Napa Valley to some of the best wineries I have been to. He takes the back roads allowing you to see the beautiful landscapes of the valley. On the way to each winery he shares his knowledge on wine, wine making and the valley. I do not suggest doing a big bus tour, definitely do the more inclusive private tours like this jeep one.

Nick picked us up on the square in Sonoma. The ride for today is exactly as expected, an old jeep with extended seats. Nick took time to ask us about our interests and expectations. Our first winery was a small boutique, we spent significant time walking the vineyard, learning about the grapes, the history, the types of grapes and various methods of growing. We tasted the different grapes before heading into the tasting room. The tasting was free at this stop and exceptional. The hostess took time to explain the various wines and help educate us on their niche. We did spend quite some time there and Nick informed us we might be tight on time to make 4 winery's in the 3 hour tour. We made three more, including a stop for chocolate. We were a little rushed at the last stop, but our expectations had been set. Nick just didn't want to blow thru and he could have. All in all exactly what we wanted. The only other people we saw on our tour was at the last stop and only a half dozen people. We enjoyed going off the beaten path.

The only complaints is that they can be difficult to contact. Website is not great and email can sit for a while. Little presence on social media. But then again if we wanted polish we could go in one of this slick buses with 30 friends.

I booked a tour with Open Air Jeep Tours (www.jeeptours.com) when visiting Napa in October 2012, and returned for a tour of Sonoma in July 2014. Nick was our tour guide both times, and as a self described "wine geek", he is a wealth of information. He lives in the area so he knows a ton about the culture, grape growing, wine making, and local vineyards.

Compared to other private wine tours, the price is very competitive. ($80/person for a 3-hour tour or $110/person for 4 hours. Does not include tasting fees, but Nick took us to reasonably priced tasting rooms and you may find some discounts or specials.)

We had a great experience and would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and different way to explore Napa or Sonoma!

Tip: The Jeep is open-air, so bring a jacket.

I'm typically not the Trip Advisor reviewer type. I've got better things to do with my time than beat up on folks who are just trying to make a living.
To make sure we're talking about the right company, it's called "Open Air Jeep Tours," based out of Fulton, CA.
BLUF (bottom line up front): this was nothing more than a guy with a jeep driving us around Sonoma valley, to only two wineries, for three hours. Save your money and have a better experience: for less money, you can go to Taittinger and Chandon, have vineyard/winemaking tours, and two champagne tastings. Then, drive up and down the Sonoma/Napa valleys and find your own cute little "boutique wineries" if that's what you are looking for.
If you want the disappointing details, read on.
On my recent 10 day CA vacation, Open Air Jeep Tours was the biggest disappointment of the whole trip. I only had a day to spend in Sonoma, so I figured I'd have some "local experts" show me and my wife around a bit. I wanted to do more than just taste wine. I wanted to get out into the vineyards and see a bit behind the scenes of how the wine is made. Their website says that they do as much:
"It's not the mad dash from one winery to the next while riding in the back of an enclosed limo or bus. Instead, it's a fun and educational adventure. We want to show you from the ground up the process of making wine. Head off, over bumpy back roads to smell the aromatic grape laden vineyards. See what's going on in the cultivating of these vines, the planting of the rootstock to the trellising of the canes.
We'll journey to the smaller boutique type wineries, staying away from the high traveled wineries. There's lots of tasting of exciting new releases on our adventures. We give you a well-rounded taste of all different types and styles of wines."
So let's break their advertisement down a piece by piece according to my experience on their three hour "Sippin' Tour."
"Mad dash" - in three hours, we made it to only two wineries. Of the three hours the guide had us, 1.5 hours of it was spent driving to the first winery, to the second winery, and back to the place where he picked us up. The first winery was not at all "a smaller boutique winery." It was so big and crowded that I had to wait 10 minutes just to pay for my tasting. And the first thing the lady at the counter tells me when we walk in is "here's a list of our wines - these here are shipped around the country, but these here you can only get locally here at our winery." The staff at this winery was not personable at all - the quintessential wine snobs - an overall most unpleasant start to our tour.
Speaking of the start of our tour, when the driver shows up, among his first words are "I usually don't do the wineries down in this area. I can usually get the tasting fees waived, but since I don't know these wineries very well, we'll see" - an inauspicious start indeed.
30 minute drive to our first winery, 45 minutes there (my wife did spend 15 minutes in their lavender garden taking pictures) - we're 1.25 hours in, and we've seen one winery. Next, we take "the scenic" route to the second winery - a 30 minute drive. Yes, it was a pretty drive, but I was not there for a pretty drive - I can do that myself.
"...show you from the ground up the process of making wine. Head off, over bumpy back roads to smell the aromatic grape laden vineyards. See what's going on in the cultivating of these vines, the planting of the rootstock to the trellising of the canes."
Of the two wineries we visited, we did not set one foot in any of their vineyards or anywhere in the "process of making wine." Our guide said, "I don't know if we'll be able to get out in the vineyards, it being harvest season and all." He was right - we didn't.
Finally, we arrive at the second winery, 1.75 hours into our 3 hour tour - 1.25 hours left. This was a little boutique winery, and we spent about 30 minutes chatting with the lady in the tasting room. The "elite winemaker" was nearby mashing grapes in a plastic bag, but of course he was much too busy to talk to us or to show us around in his winery or vineyards - it being harvest season and all. We did buy a bottle of port, and our guide took it back to the winemaker for an autograph - nice gesture I suppose.
After about 30 minutes at winery #2, the guide says, "we won't have enough time to go to anymore wineries now; we'll need to be heading back." We bought that bottle of port, said our goodbyes, and got in the jeep with about 40 minutes left on the tour. Driving out of winery #2, the guide stops the jeep, grabs a handful of grapes off a vine and gives them to us to taste - I guess that was the "ground up process of making wine."
A 35 minute drive later, and we are back at our starting point - and very disappointed.
I could go on here about what these guys need to do to make this trip, $75/person, worth the money, but if they can't figure it out, maybe I'll just do it for them and start my own wine tour business. For the same price and a bit more research and effort, I'm sure I could provide a much higher quality experience for the same price.
I will give one piece of advice though. At snobby winery #1, the lady said "do you guys have a tasting coupon?" Of course we didn't, since Open Air Jeep Tours "can't tell you our special stops because then they wouldn't be the BEST KEPT SECRETS of the Wine Country." So - Open Air Jeep Tour folks - if you're not going to get the tasting fees waived, the least you could do is get the tasting coupons for the wineries you intend to visit!!!

Being this tour was done in 2013 and late in the season, we have changed a lot of things. We have new guides, we have redesigned our tours and the way we guide our clients around both the Napa and Sonoma Wine Countries. We try to satisfy all that takes our tours and we do want to heard about their experience on the tour as well as about the guide that toured them around, but there are times in our 25 years we can't satisfy all that a client wants in a tour. Yes, we listen and change but to only have one bad review in the last 25 years means that we are doing a good job 99.9% of the time. Sorry that this person didn't have the experience they were expecting, but we would have like this person to contacted us at the time, we would have refunded their fee and addressed the issue at the time.
